6. English plan
• The plan at the time involved
manoeuvring to approach the enemy
fleet in a single line of battle and then
engaging broadside in parallel lines
• Nelson’s plan was to cut the opposing
line in three:
• The front aka vanguard
• The centre
• The back aka rearguard
• Nelson knew that the superior
seamanship, faster gunnery and better
morale of his crews were significant
advantages
7. Combat
• The battle progressed largely
according to Nelson’s plan
• "England expects that every man will
do his duty".
• Nelson was wounded by a musket
• Nelson’s squadron, with 12 ships,
attacked the vanguard and centre of
Villeneuve’s line, which included
Villeneuve in the Bucentaure
• Six leading French and Spanish ships
were ignored in the first attack, and a
couple of hours later they were able to
turn and counterattack
• The weak counterattack failed and was
driven off
10. Casualties and losses
• 4,395 killed
• 2,541
wounded
• 7,000-8,000
captured
• 21 ships of the
line captured
• 1 ship of the
line destroyed
• 458 killed
• 1,208 wounded
• Nelson was
wounded and
died as the battle
concluded
• After a storm on
the 22nd only 4
captured ships
remained
11. Consequences

seriously challenged by the
French Fleet
