The Language Experience Approach integrates the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It uses language experience charts where children orally compose experiences that are recorded by the teacher. These charts become classroom texts that show the connection between experience, reading, writing, and meaning. The approach focuses discussions on known words and adds new ones, recording them for reading practice.

strips or chart paper.

7.  Choose a focal point, such as an interesting
classroom experience.
 Discuss the topic & create a title. Record the
title on top of the chart. Use questions like
“What else can you tell me?”
 Children watch as the teacher writes their
ideas on the chart & read while he/she is
writing.

8.  Read the chart with the children, pointing the
words.
 Take volunteers to read parts of all the chart.
 Let another child point to the words while
others read.

9.  Skills can be taught in meaningful context as
children read their own words.

10.  Writing through language experience is
published instantly, as it is recorded by the
teacher.
 Display charts on bulletin boards and walls
and bind them together, creating class books
for further reading and rereading.
