We spend about 90% of our time on average in buildings.
For comfort we need the air to be clean and in a narrow
band of temperature 20-24 deg.C.and humidity 40-60% RH.
Clean air can be an issue especially in urban and industrial
locations with high levels of background air pollution.

Outside sources can be combustion
gases and particles that can be toxic
and be inhaled giving health
problems

Fine combustion particles are produced in
large quantities from burning fossil fuels.
These health damaging particles are able
to penetrate into buildings.
Air filters can clean supply air and deliver
better Indoor Air Quality into the building.

Chemical cleaners, paints, sprays,
cooking, heating systems are all sources
of particles in liquid and solid as well as
gas phase contaminants.
People also produce significant amounts
of these types of contaminants.
Air filters can arrest these contaminants
and deliver better Indoor Air Quality.

The fine combustion particles are
small, toxic, jagged, insoluble and
usually chemically reactive. They
should be removed from air as they
are a public health hazard.

We need to appreciate where contaminants come from
Sources Outside the Building
Sources Inside the Building (Don’t forget people and HVAC system)
Types of Particles : Solid , Liquid, Organic, Non organic
Bacteria, Virus, Pollen, Fungal spores, Combustion particles, Sand, Salts
Types of Gases : Carbon dioxide(CO2), Carbon Monoxide (CO),
Nitrogen oxides (Nox) NO NO2, Sulphur dioxide (SO2), Ozone (O3),
Formaldehyde, Radon, VOC’s pesticides.

12. Why is EN13779:2007 is an important standard?
EN13779:2007 is an important standard because it advises
the required filter classification for clean healthy HVAC air.
EN779:2011 is needed to provide a test for classification that
gives a consistent and accurate measure of filter particulate
efficiency (As close to real life as possible).
Also important
EN1886:2007 gives minimum leakage rates for F7 to F9
filters (F7=2% F8=1% F9=0.5% of volume flow rate). Front
Withdrawal Frames (FWF) are required to meet this criteria.
EN13053:2007 advises air handling unit manufacturers that a
single stage AHU filter system should be minimum F7.

13. Step 2/ Determine the outdoor air quality
The EN13779 defines 3 categories of outdoor air:
Category Description
ODA 1 Pure air which may be only temporarily dusty (e.g. pollen)
ODA 2 Outdoor air with high concentrations of particulate matter and/or gaseous pollutants
ODA 3 Outdoor air with very high concentrations of gaseous pollutants

17. Indoor Air Quality issues – The HVAC system
The HVAC system is a source of
contamination. Moulds and Fungal
growths can take hold as dirt
deposits can harbour bacterial
colonies. Good system design and
regular maintenance can resolve
this problem. Surveys and regular
inspections are required.
