Science Earthquake Data By: Katie Corbett
Part 3 Step 2 Question 2 Q:What do you notice about the distribution of these earthquakes? A: The earthquakes are distributed mostly on or nearby boundary lines
Part 3 Step 2 Question 3 Q: How does the distribution of these earthquakes compare to others? A: That they are all in groups on the Convergent Boundary, and they are usually near or on the oceans.
Part 3 Step 2 Question 5 Q: What type of plate boundary is associated with earthquakes that have a magnitude of 7.0 or greater? A: They occur by or on the Convergent boundaries.
Part 3 Step 3 Question 4 Q: What Percentage of big earthquakes occur within 100 miles of a convergent plate boundary? A: 613 out 1286 of 48% of big earthquakes occur within 100 miles of convergent plate boundaries.
Part 3 Step 3 Question 5 Q:What Percentage of big earthquakes occur within 200 miles of a convergent plate boundary? A: 977 out of 1286 so that is 76% of big earthquakes occur within 200 miles of a convergent plate boundary.
Final list of ten places: California - Because there many dots there and they get small earthquakes all the time. Alaska - Because in the southern part of it has many dots that are cluttered into a line that curves with the shape of the state. Chile - Because a couple of earthquakes hit there recently. Canada - Because there were just a couple of earthquakes that hit there recently in this past year. Brazil - Because they are kind of over due for one they have had very little activity in this past year. London - Because they get small earthquakes everyday. Monaco - Because it has many earthquakes. Japan - Because they just had there big one. Italy - Because they have had a lot in the past year. China - Because it has a good chance that the southern part will have many earthquakes because there are earthquakes all around it.
What new technology do scientists have: The new technology that scientist have is that they have satellites that can tell us when and where an earthquake will happen before they occur.
Overall: I have learned that earthquakes can happen anywhere and at anytime. Predicting them is a lot more challenging then I thought. Some factors that influence earthquake prediction would be the technology they use, the weather, and where you are in the world. Most of the large earthquakes occur on the west side of South America and in the southern part of Europe.
