2. I am going to discuss what a
search engine is and what search
engine optimisation is.
When we talk about search
engines, we tend to refer to
Google, because Google
provides traffic for the vast
majority of searches. Most of my
traffic comes from Google as well
as Bing and Yahoo.
3. Search engines are basically a
document retrieval program. They use
computer programs and software that
follow links on the internet and catalog
web pages. The programs analyse the
various web pages to try and
determine what the web pages are
about. Once they establish what a
particular web page content is all
about, that specific page is indexed
under a keyword, or set of keywords
that relates to that pages meaning.
4. So for example, when someone
enters a search term into the
search engines, the software
displays the most relevant web
pages based on the keywords
that they have been filed under.
5. Think of it this way. The internet is
like a huge filing cabinet and
each website has it's own file
folder. The search engines simply
go through all the files and pull out
the ones that match what you’re
looking for.
6. That's a very simplistic way of
looking at it – the algorithms that
are used to do this are very
complicated indeed!
7. The way that most search engines
display the results is to show the top 10
on a page. So if you have a website
then your challenge is trying to explain
to the search engines that your
particular web page is more important
and more relevant than everyone else
in your niche!
If you can do that, it means a lot of
traffic will come to your website.
8. The Types Of Search Engine
Optimisation
There’s actually two kinds of search
engine optimisation: on page and off
page.
9. On page optimisation is probably the
most common in terms of what most
people think. On page SEO refers to
factors on your web page that tell
Google what keywords to index your
page under. So this includes things
such as headings, title tag, and words
used within your content. Your content
should be written naturally and include
words and phrases that are related to
the topic of your content.
10. The off site or off page
optimization primarily refers to the
number and quality of links that
are pointing back to your pages.
This has become less important
over time as it is easy to
manipulate links coming to your
site.
11. The most important is the title tag.
If you don’t get anything else
perfect, get that title tag right. Its
going to synchronize up with your
off site efforts and create some
really nice results for you.
