Ekomuro H2O+ is a vertical rainwater storage system made of recycled PET bottles that harvests rainwater for reuse. It has been implemented in over 50 schools in Colombia to provide water and promote environmental education. The system consists of assembled modules of PET bottles that are installed on rooftops to collect and store rainwater. Ekomuro H2O+ aims to promote appropriate technology and a circular economy through rainwater harvesting and reuse of plastic bottles.

This is the slide deck presented at our 1st event of a pressing Series on 'Circular Economy & Waste Management' in Asia. 8 million tonnes of plastic leak into the oceans each year, and more than 80% is from Asia! If we don't act now, there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish by 2050. It is time for individuals, companies and governments to rethink waste, especially in Asia. Today's linear ‘take, make, dispose’ economic model relies on large quantities of cheap, easily accessible materials and energy, and is a model that is reaching its physical limits. Today 80–120 billion USD of plastic materials is lost to the economy every year (plastic which is used just one time and then incinerated, landfilled or leaked into ocean). This is not just a business loss, but one of the biggest environmental challenges of our time. An attractive and viable alternative that governments and businesses are exploring is the Circular Economy. This session - specifically focusing on plastic - brought insights from global business leaders, to social entrepreneurs and waste pickers who are all beginning to see waste not as trash, but as a resource. In emerging countries, managing waste has even become a solution to uplift people out of poverty. As the issue keeps growing, new regulations (such as Extended Producer Responsibility) have started to come into effect across Asia, making brands & producers responsible for recycling their post-consumer waste. Our speakers shared what it implies for big brands and each of us.

With the take-make-waste linear model no longer viable, companies are actively pursuing alternative models such as the circular economy, which has captured the imagination of the private sector as a viable approach for decoupling economic growth from resource constraints. The circular economy, an industrial model that is restorative or regenerative by design and intent, aims to keep products, components, and materials at their highest utility at all times, and represents an opportunity worth in excess of $1 trillion for the global economy. In this session, we will explore how companies can leverage circular economy principles and best practices to help eliminate waste throughout the value chain and improve the bottom line.

The Water Europe Strategic Research Agenda (SIRA) has been developed by Water Europe with the input of its members, the Water Europe Working Groups, and its key stakeholders. A public consultation has also been part of the drafting process. A special thank you goes out to the members of the SIRA Task Forces that were set up to develop the 6 Key Components that are the logical building blocks of the Water Europe SIRA. The Water Europe SIRA is a living document that has initially been developed in the first half of 2016 to promote a balanced mix of research and innovation measures that contribute to overcoming the main bottlenecks towards the realization of the Water Europe Vision as described in “Water Europe Vision: towards a future-proof model for a European water-smart society”.

Ecological Sequestration Trust

Project-based learning (PBL) involves students designing, developing, and constructing hands-on solutions to a problem. The educational value of PBL is that it aims to build students’ creative capacity to work through difficult or ill-structured problems, commonly in small teams. Typically, PBL takes students through the following phases or steps: Identifying a problem Agreeing on or devising a solution and potential solution path to the problem (i.e., how to achieve the solution) Designing and developing a prototype of the solution Refining the solution based on feedback from experts, instructors, and/or peers Depending on the goals of the instructor, the size and scope of the project can vary greatly. Students may complete the four phases listed above over the course of many weeks, or even several times within a single class period. Because of its focus on creativity and collaboration, PBL is enhanced when students experience opportunities to work across disciplines, employ technologies to make communication and product realization more efficient, or to design solutions to real-world problems posed by outside organizations or corporations. Projects do not need to be highly complex for students to benefit from PBL techniques. Often times, quick and simple projects are enough to provide students with valuable opportunities to make connections across content and practice. Implementing Project-Based Learning As a pedagogical approach, PBL entails several key processes: (1) defining problems in terms of given constraints or challenges, (2) generating multiple ideas to solve a given problem, (3) prototyping — often in rapid iteration — potential solutions to a problem, and (4) testing the developed solution products or services in a “live” or authentic setting. Defining the Problem PBL projects should start with students asking questions about a problem. What is the nature of problem they are trying to solve? What assumptions can they make about why the problem exists? Asking such questions will help students frame the problem in an appropriate context. If students are working on a real-world problem, it is important to consider how an end user will benefit from a solution. Generating Ideas Next, students should be given the opportunity to brainstorm and discuss their ideas for solving the problem. The emphasis here is not to generate necessarily good ideas, but to generate many ideas. As such, brainstorming should encourage students to think wildly, but to stay focused on the problem. Setting guidelines for brainstorming sessions, such as giving everyone a chance to voice an idea, suspending judgement of others’ ideas, and building on the ideas of others will help make brainstorming a productive and generative exercise. Prototyping Solutions Designing and prototyping a solution are typically the next phase of the PBL process.
