This is leadership.
The Problem
 Over 50% of executives surveyed by LNS
Research reported that their organization views
quality as a department, not a responsibility
throughout the enterprise.
 Employees and stakeholders still do not
understand the benefits of spending time on
quality improvement.
 Quality management is not effective because of
lack of buy-in and engagement at all levels.
 Quality is a check the box item
Why Leadership?
 Leadership (True Leadership that is), is an
overlooked component when it comes to
becoming more effective and more successful
 According to an IQS article, leadership is
absolutely critical to nurturing a successful culture
of quality.
~ It is usually the missing piece of the puzzle. It is the
secret to the success of quality programs.
Why Leadership?
 Leadership is not management and
management is not leadership.
 Leadership is not just about approving
the next quality initiative.
 Leadership is not telling people what to
do
We’ve been trying to manage and not
lead
What is Leadership?
Leadership is influence.
So, it is not position, nor title and it is not
management. That is why managing without
leadership does not yield results.
What is Leadership?
Are you the
Quality Manager? – Having a hard time getting
buy-in from above and below?
Quality Associate? – Having a hard time
implementing quality
Auditor? – Are you auditing organizations who are
just checking the box because it’s time for an
audit?
The answer: Influence!
So how do you influence? How do you lead from a
position of influence and not your title?

 Business wants to sell more products: Be able to
influence customers to buy
 Manager wants a successful team: Be able to
influence your employees
 Coach wants a winning team: Be able to
influence players
 Organization wants to communicate and get
buy in into quality throughout the organization:

Your leadership ability determines your level of

higher the lid, the higher your effectiveness and
vise versa”

Character
 Character and Integrity are the foundation of
leadership. It is the starting point of being able to
influence
 What kind of character do you portray as a
manager? As the CEO? As a company?
If we try to use human influence strategies and tactics
to get people to do what we want or buy into our
ideas, to work together or to be motivated, if our
character is fundamentally flawed, marked by
duplicity or insincerity, then in the long run, we cannot
be successful. ~ Stephen Covey

When you have a good character, it means you
can be trusted. And when you can be trusted, you
can influence
Character = trust = influence = success

How to develop and maintain character
Adhere to ethical and moral standards
No lying, no stealing, no cheating
Commit your self to character over personal gain
Don’t make commitments you can’t keep
Keep commitments you have made
Be respectful
Be authentic. Don’t play politics, don’t role play
Be disciplined
Be truthful even when it hurts

The Power of Connection
Everyone communicates, Few Connect
Leadership is at its lowest when it is based on
position only. It grows to a higher level as you
develop relationships with others
Influencing is at its lowest when it is based on
communicating only. Communication becomes
effective and yields results when we connect
“Leaders touch a heart before they ask for a hand”
Not connecting first leads to resistance, mistrust
and strained relationships

The Power of Connection
How do you connect?
 Don’t take people for granted
 Know the people
 Listen
 Go where they are
 Make it about them (Talk at me and you’ll talk alone, Talk
to me and I’ll listen, talk about me, and I will listen for
hours)
 Keep it simple
Connection takes time and energy
The 30 minutes your take out of your week to connect with
others will result in dividends that 30 minutes in your corner

The Law of Buy in
Many Many leaders ask, “Do you think my people
will buy into my vision?”
“People buy into the leader first then the vision”
No matter how great your vision or initiative is,
people will not buy into it…they will not embrace it
fully
You are the message
You cannot separate yourself from your message,
program or initiative

How do people buy into you?
1. Build a good relationship with your employees,
customers ….stakeholders
People buy from who the know, like and trust
2. Build Credibility
3. Have a good History
4. Be Consistent
5. Is the vision about the customer, employee and
stakeholders or just about you?

 How does your vision or initiative benefit your
employees, managers or organization?
 What is in it for them?
 How can you tailor it to really benefit them?
 What is the big picture? How can your vision
meet their already set goals?

Work on having people buying into you first
What is the current level of buy in for the people
you lead?
“If your people don’t buy into you, they will not
help you execute your vision-even if they love it”

sometimes. Think outside the box

attract

determined by those closest to you

 The Law of Victory: Successful leadership means

  • 3. Imagine Imagine Having:  Bosses who lead  Engineers who connect  Team members who work together  Subject matter experts who can equip others  CEO’s who truly value their employees. This is leadership.

The Problem  Over 50% of executives surveyed by LNS Research reported that their organization views quality as a department, not a responsibility throughout the enterprise.  Employees and stakeholders still do not understand the benefits of spending time on quality improvement.  Quality management is not effective because of lack of buy-in and engagement at all levels.  Quality is a check the box item

Why Leadership?  Leadership (True Leadership that is), is an overlooked component when it comes to becoming more effective and more successful  According to an IQS article, leadership is absolutely critical to nurturing a successful culture of quality. ~ It is usually the missing piece of the puzzle. It is the secret to the success of quality programs.
  • 6. Why Leadership?  Leadership is not management and management is not leadership.  Leadership is not just about approving the next quality initiative.  Leadership is not telling people what to do We’ve been trying to manage and not lead
  • 7. What is Leadership? Leadership is influence. So, it is not position, nor title and it is not management. That is why managing without leadership does not yield results.
  • 8. What is Leadership? Are you the Quality Manager? – Having a hard time getting buy-in from above and below? Quality Associate? – Having a hard time implementing quality Auditor? – Are you auditing organizations who are just checking the box because it’s time for an audit? The answer: Influence! So how do you influence? How do you lead from a position of influence and not your title?

Leading from a position of Influence  Business wants to sell more products: Be able to influence customers to buy  Manager wants a successful team: Be able to influence your employees  Coach wants a winning team: Be able to influence players  Organization wants to communicate and get buy in into quality throughout the organization: Be able to influence suppliers, employees and upper management

Leadership the Missing Component Quality + Leadership = Effectiveness and Success Your leadership ability determines your level of effectiveness. “Your leadership ability is the lid(or cap) that determines the level of your effectiveness. The higher the lid, the higher your effectiveness and vise versa”
  • 12. Raising your Leadership Lid Character  Character and Integrity are the foundation of leadership. It is the starting point of being able to influence  What kind of character do you portray as a manager? As the CEO? As a company? If we try to use human influence strategies and tactics to get people to do what we want or buy into our ideas, to work together or to be motivated, if our character is fundamentally flawed, marked by duplicity or insincerity, then in the long run, we cannot be successful. ~ Stephen Covey

Raising your Leadership Lid Character How to develop and maintain character Adhere to ethical and moral standards No lying, no stealing, no cheating Commit your self to character over personal gain Don’t make commitments you can’t keep Keep commitments you have made Be respectful Be authentic. Don’t play politics, don’t role play Be disciplined Be truthful even when it hurts
  • 15. Raising your Leadership Lid The Power of Connection Everyone communicates, Few Connect Leadership is at its lowest when it is based on position only. It grows to a higher level as you develop relationships with others Influencing is at its lowest when it is based on communicating only. Communication becomes effective and yields results when we connect “Leaders touch a heart before they ask for a hand” Not connecting first leads to resistance, mistrust and strained relationships

Raising your Leadership Lid The Power of Connection How do you connect?  Don’t take people for granted  Know the people  Listen  Go where they are  Make it about them (Talk at me and you’ll talk alone, Talk to me and I’ll listen, talk about me, and I will listen for hours)  Keep it simple Connection takes time and energy The 30 minutes your take out of your week to connect with others will result in dividends that 30 minutes in your corner office will get you~ Kemi S

Raising your Leadership Lid The Power of Buy In The Law of Buy in Many Many leaders ask, “Do you think my people will buy into my vision?” “People buy into the leader first then the vision” No matter how great your vision or initiative is, people will not buy into it…they will not embrace it fully You are the message You cannot separate yourself from your message, program or initiative
  • 18. Raising your Leadership Lid The Power of Buy In How do people buy into you? 1. Build a good relationship with your employees, customers ….stakeholders People buy from who the know, like and trust 2. Build Credibility 3. Have a good History 4. Be Consistent 5. Is the vision about the customer, employee and stakeholders or just about you?

Raising your Leadership Lid The Power of Buy In  Is it about you or them?  How does your vision or initiative benefit your employees, managers or organization?  What is in it for them?  How can you tailor it to really benefit them?  What is the big picture? How can your vision meet their already set goals?
  • 20. Raising your Leadership Lid The Power of Buy In Give it time Work on having people buying into you first What is the current level of buy in for the people you lead? “If your people don’t buy into you, they will not help you execute your vision-even if they love it”
  • 21. Other Leadership Principles  Intuition: Read the situation; rely on your gut sometimes. Think outside the box  The Law of Attraction: Who you are is who you attract  The Law of the Inner Circle: Your potential is determined by those closest to you  The Law of Empowerment: Give power to others  The Law of the picture: People do what people see  The Law of Victory: Successful leadership means finding a way to win…always
  • 22. Other Leadership Principles  The Law of timing: When to lead is as important as what to do and where to go  The Law of Explosive Growth: To add growth, lead followers, to multiply, lead leaders
  • 23. What Next?  Take the leadership test. Where are you strong? Where are you weak? Where do you stand?  Continue to develop your leadership strengths  Learn the principles and work on your leadership weaknesses  Teach it to others  Succeed!
