  1. Good morning, my name is Ken Lazar. I am Managing Director for Experis Engineering. Experis is are the professional staffing division of Manpower Group, the third largest workforce solutions company on the planet. I also am also founder of the Scioto Ridge Job Networking Group. We are pleased to recently celebrate our 5 th anniversary and have helped over 2000 professionals in Central Ohio find new jobs. Over the past ten years of my career, I have had the pleasure of putting over 12,000 people to work. I am not a career coach, nor a resume writer. I speak to you today as a voice of experience. I have changed fields 8 times in my career. I have been out of work three times and conducted five major job searches. I have moved my family 10 times since my wife and and I am still married. The advice I am giving you today is the world according to Ken Lazar. Like any guest speaker, I am not an expert. The job search process is not an exact science. If it were you would all be working. I like to refer to myself as one of the tallest pigmies in the world of work. My talk today is titles “12 Things You Could Do, Right Now, to take 60 Days Off Your Job Search”. The 12 tips I give to you today are derived from the things that I see every day. They will help you. But to be successful, you must do all 12. They are just that important. This may be the shortest but most important presentation you will receive while you are in job transition. I have placed I on my LInkedIn profile for you to download at our leisure.
  2. Take a look in the mirror. In your last job, did you work hard or just show up? If you approach your job search in the same way, you are in for a long wait. Make finding a job your job. Seventy-one percent of American workers are "not engaged" or "actively disengaged" in their work, meaning they are emotionally disconnected from their workplaces and are less likely to be productive. That leaves nearly one-third of American workers who are "engaged," or involved in and enthusiastic about their work and contributing to their organizations in a positive manner. This trend remained relatively stable throughout 2013. Wake up at 5:30 am. Walk. Prepare for the day with a positive mental attitude. Work until 6:00 pm. Eat. Answer emails and research the internet while watching TV with your spouse.6. Get out of the house. Attend professional association meetings, conventions, networking events, one-on-one meetings, SRJNG meetings, JFS events, other job search networking groups.
  3. Focus on your qualifications. Are turning the corner of on the back nine of your careers. You have done many things. Now you need to focus on what you do best and what positions that you are most qualified to hold. Very few companies are looking for generalists. They are looking for specific skills. Transferable skills: Writing, Analyzing , Conducting research, Organizing, Advocating, Delegating, Public speaking, Estimating, Forecasting, Planning, Management, Computer, literacy, Work well under pressure, Foreign language skills, Sign language skills, Coordinate events, Teach/Train others, Negotiation skills, Proofreading and editing skills, Problem solving skills, Flexibility/AdaptabilityTeam player, Interpersonal skills, Interviewing skills, Decision-making skills, Creative thinking skills If you are changing careers, take recruiters off your job search strategy. They can’t help you.
  4. If you don’t have a job, and are not independently wealthy, your fiscal health is a concern. Right! It’s Ok for some people to say that this is the time to find yourself or to change fields or to do what you are passionate about. I think those are great things to pursue. If that is your strategy, that’s admirable - add 6 months to your job search. Most of the people giving you this advice are employed. I suggest applying first aid. Get yourself to work and start your long term strategy. Invest in your career. Most people spend more time planning their vacations than planning their career. Get to work. Feather your bed. Dig your well. Find your purpose.
  5. 1. Please take your resume out. Tear off the first 1/3 and throw the rest away. Give it to your neighbor.
  6. 1. I am sure there is good reason to have a functional resume, I just don’t know what it is yet.
  7. This is the single biggest mistake that job seekers make. Most people are approaching the job search backwards. I see more people come to Scioto Ridge meetings week after week and have no idea who they want to work for. Get a copy of What Color is Your Parachute by Richard Boles. Do the Flower exercise. It is the best exercise on prioritization of your career that I have ever run across. You will be take through the steps in determining the criteria of your ultimate employer.

  9. Email threads about attitude; It’s hard putting people to work. Helen: Mr. Lazar, I would like information about the great companies you work with. I have an engineering degrees coupled with technical and non-technical sales experience. Since relocating to Columbus my only job offers have been customer service or a picker-packer. When you're unemployed, you tend not to spend money. Aspecially when a recruter says Cleveland and it turns out to be Euclid or further. There are so many bordering cities that consider them selves as Cleveland.  It could be a hour drive or a 15 min drive. Big difference at 3.50/gal.  I still need to know the location.
