and circumstances of his life, it didn’t even look
promising or possible at all. He was born into a
working class family during the peak of the civil
rights movement. A paralyzing ailment from a viral
infection a ected him when he was eight. It would
take a long time before he could normally perform
activities young people his age regularly enjoyed.

He started playing football when he was a
sophomore in high school but was practically
ignored by Druid City High, which was well-known
for its football program. He became an All-Star
running back. That wasn’t enough, though, to get the
attention of top football varsity programs. A family
friend’s recommendation brought him to Alabama
A&M in Huntsville. Entering the program, he became
a wide receiver, holding best all-time receiver
records with the school and two all-conference
selections.
A lot of people noticed his unassuming but
passionate nature. He was a fourth-round pick, the
82nd in the 1974 NFL Draft. The Pittsburgh Steelers
drafted that same year many others who would
become future Hall of Famers, and probably no one
ever thought Stallworth would become part of it all.
He would be selected to the Pro Football Hall of
Fame in 2002. He holds career and single-game
yards-per-catch averages in Bowl history and was
MVP twice for Steelers.
