Economic Development Corporation
Newark Community Economic Development Corporation (Newark CEDC) is an organization created to attract, grow, and
retain businesses in Newark, New Jersey. Part of the role of the NCEDC is also to improve the capacity of small and
minority businesses, and help to stimulate real estate development throughout the city. The organization was founded in
2007 as Brick City Development Corporation and reorganized in 2014. It’s Newark’s main catalyst for economic
development. Newark CEDC works in coordination with Newark’s Department of Economic & Housing Development to
create jobs, create wealth, and initiate and maintain economic growth.
Newark is the largest city in New Jersey. The economic development work done by Newark CEDC has the potential to
bolster the economy of the entire state. Plus Newark can act as an economic incubator to help state officials understand what
techniques and methods of economic development will work and can be replicated in cities throughout the state. Since the
creation of Newark CEDC, it’s been very successful in helping to revitalize the city’s economic growth and development.
This has helped it to serve as a model for the economic turnaround of other cities throughout New Jersey.
Kevin Seawright is the Executive Vice President and CFO of the Newark Community Economic Development Corporation.
It’s a position he has held since September of 2014. Seawright graduated from Almeda University with an MBA in 2006. He
also completed Notre Dame University Mendoza School of Business’s program in Non-Profit Executive Leadership in
2015. Seawright worked for Baltimore City Government for a decade. During that time he held a number of positions
including VP Deputy Chief Operating Officer for the City School System, Chief of Finance Administration & Facilities for
the Recreation & Parks department, Payroll Director for the Housing Authority, and Accountant for the Commission On
Aging.
Seawright is a member of a number of organizations. They include American Society for Public Administration, National
Forum for Black Public Administrators, National Recreation and Parks Association, Conference of Minority Transportation
& Infrastructure Officials, Babe Ruth Museum, Association of School Business Officials, and National Association of Black
Accountants (NABA). He also has a wide range of skills including Strategic Planning, Performance Management,
Managerial Finance, Operations Management, Data Analysis, and Contract Negotiation.
There are a number of causes about which Seawright feels deeply. They include Human Rights, Civil Rights and Social
Action, Education, Economic Empowerment, social services, and the alleviation of poverty.
