Times School of Journalism
Tracing its roots to 1838, the Times Group is India’s largest media house with a dominant
presence across all media platforms and a footprint spanning the whole of Indian sub-continent.
The flagship daily of the group - The Times of India – is today the largest English newspaper
in the world with its sister publication – The Economic Times being world’s second-largest
English business daily. (Visit www.timesgroup.com for more details....)
With the mainstay of the group being creation and distribution of content, the Times Group
employs some of the best minds in the business, who constantly endeavour to set new
benchmarks in providing cutting-edge news, views and analysis to a varied section of the
society – day in and day out.
With the objective of promoting excellence in the field of media, the Times Group started in
1985 a one-of-its-kind year-long programme in Social Journalism, which soon became the talk
of the town as it was the first such offering by any media house in India.
In 1990, it set up up the Times Centre for Media Studies in Delhi (renamed as Times Centre
for Media and Management Studies in 2010) which started offering the journalism programme
under the brand name Times School of Journalism (which was made into a separate company
in 2010).
Times Centre for Media Studies additionally started a programme for marketing aspirants
under the brand of Times School of Marketing (which was also made into a separate company
in 2010 called Times School of Marketing and Management - TSMM). The vision for Times
Centre for Media Studies was to build young graduates tuned to the discipline of media and
marketing as well as giving them a definitive insight into the workings of the Times Group.
Currently, there are 3 learning centres in operation – TCMMS, TSM and TSJ – with the sole
objective of grooming young minds and training them as successful media professionals.
Apart from running Post-Graduate programmes in journalism and marketing from its premises
at New Delhi, TCMS has also run specialized courses on Sales Management, Private Equity
and of late a path-breaking programme in Business Journalism (run by TSMM) – which draws
its strength from the dominance the Times Group has in Business News.
Today, TCMMS, TSJ and TSMM are in the business of grooming young minds and training
them as successful media professionals – many of whom are leaders and experts in their chosen
field. Apart from running Post-Graduate programmes in journalism and marketing from its
premises at New Delhi, TCMS has also run specialized courses on Sales Management, Private
Equity and of late a path-breaking programme in Business Journalism (run by TSMM) – which
draws its strength from the dominance the Times Group has in business news.
The various programmes run by the Times Group under the aegis of TCMMS, TSMM and TSJ
are autonomous courses and not linked to any educational bodies overseen by the government
agencies. This, however, is not an impediment as the Times Group – thanks to its leadership
position in media, has the best in-house and external faculty – which give it that edge which
no other private or university-governed media/journalism school can strive to achieve. The
courses have been readily accepted by corporate world and the students passing from this
25
hallowed institution are always sought after by other reputed media houses, non-media
companies and even government bodies.
The Times Centre for Media and Management Studies was set up, as TCMS, with a vision to
promote excellence in the field of media. TCMS run courses on journalism specific to the
newspaper industry. The journalism courses were transcribed into a new unit called The Times
School of Journalism.
Times School of Journalism (TSJ) conducts a year-long full-time PG Diploma programme in
Journalism with the objective of churning out fully-trained journalists and content
professionals for leading media organisations - not just in India, but abroad. The programme
designed to be a top-of-the-line course, enables students to learn the art of reporting, writing,
editing, designing, scripting, programming etc in its state-of-the-art facilities - which includes
a fully-functional news room and a TV studio enabling students to get exposure on all aspects
of print publishing, online content systems and TV programming. The skills taught in class are
further polished during not once, but twice, during the hands-on training period that our
students undergo in various newsrooms of the Times Group and other prominent media
organisations.
The journalism programme is an autonomous course and not linked to any educational bodies
overseen by the government agencies. This, however, is not an impediment as the Times Group
- thanks to its leadership position in media, has the best in-house and external faculty - which
gives it that edge which no other private or university-governed media/journalism school can
strive to achieve. The courses have been readily accepted by corporate world and the students
passing out from this hallowed institution are always sought after by other reputed media
houses, non-media companies and even government bodies. This and allied programmes run
by the Times Group are also accepted by leading foreign universities like Columbia School of
Journalism, London School of Economics, INSEAD, Singapore National University, etc.
