What’s your favorite
thing about teaching? There is never a dull moment as a teacher! Teaching is never the same from one day to the next and my students make each day exciting. I love seeing their “light bulb” moments and it is so rewarding to see them improve. What do you do in your free time? I am a Polynesian dancer at the Polynesian Cultural Center. Dance has always been my passion and it allows me to lead a healthy and balanced lifestyle. My husband and I enjoy entering competitions, from marathons to entrepreneurial contests. We currently manage three businesses and that keeps us busy when we are not in school. What are some of your biggest challenges as a teacher? Time is a scarce resource and there is so much to do as a teacher. My greatest challenge is time management and finding time to converse with colleagues and discuss teaching strategies. Grading homework and essays is also very time consuming but I love it! What are some of your biggest successes as a teacher? In my first year teaching, I had very limited resources and I wasn’t able to incorporate technology in my classroom. I created a DonorsChoose campaign to raise money for a set of 11 Chromebooks. In two days, the project was completely funded and we received the Chromebooks the following week. Technology in the classroom is an invaluable tool! How have you used Albert in class? Albert allows my AP® US History students to test their knowledge and improve their understanding of the content on a deeper level. After every unit, we spend one class period answering approximately 50 questions per student. We set an accuracy goal as a class and students can their results in real time. I have two sections, and both classes like to compete against each other. My students are expected to complete all unit questions at home before the next exam. How has Albert helped you with some of the challenges you face as a teacher? In the long run, Albert has helped me save time and focus on helping my students prepare for what is really important, such as subject mastery and exam preparation. Albert allows me to incorporate technology in my classroom and it provides interactive exercises with custom feedback. My classes are very competitive and they aim for 100% accuracy.
