Final Major Project,
Research Practitioners
By Kieran Bradley
Research
Greg James
I have taken inspiration from this radio
presenter, after listening to many of of this
shows on BBC Radio 1, I have found that he
has a certain style and form in which he
presents. One of the things that I really like
about Greg’s way of presenting, is that he is
always very enthusiastic and happy, he also
connects with the audience in every show he
does, which is another element that I like.
Greg’s work has helped me when it comes
to presenting on Two Rivers Radio.

Daniel P Carter
I have taken inspiration from this radio
presenter, after listening to his show “Radio
1 Rock Show” for a long time, I have found
that this presenter has wide range of
knowledge on music and different genres,
especially rock. Following him has helped
me, in regards to my own work, with Two
Rivers Radio, when it comes to music. I
have also gained techniques in interviewing,
after listening to a lot that Dan has done,
with lots of different artists.

ResearchDaniel Walker
I have taken inspiration from this TV
presenter/Journalist, when it comes to
presenting in my own projects, and in the
general way Dan works, when watching BBC
Breakfast I’ve seen the way that he improvises
when things don’t go to plan, and that’s
something that I really like, the skill to be able to
do that. I have also taken inspiration from this
person, because they work in the news and
broadcasting sector and that’s something I’m
really interested in, as I like to keep up to date
with current affairs. Dan also does presenting
on “Football Focus”

Victoria Derbyshire
I have taken inspiration from this TV
presenter/Journalist, having watched her show
“ Victoria Derbyshire” on BBC Two, I like how
she interviews people, and I’ve seen in some
interviews, she doesn’t take “No” for an answer,
and getting us the answers that we all want.

Ross Kemp
In 2016 Actor, and Investigative Journalist Ross
Kemp did a documentary series called “Ross
Kemp’s Britain” on one episode, Ross explored
Alcohol Abuse. I have got a lot of inspiration from
this documentary and having personal
experiences with Alcohol. I like how Ross
explores issues in detail, I also like how he goes
out and gets in the to the thick of it, when
covering issues, for example he did a
documentary on gangs across the UK, during the
episode he went to several places and met with
gangs to interview them.

Ben Zand
BBC Journalist and Documentary Filmmaker, Ben is
also head of documentary team at the BBC. I wanted
to understand where Ben’s love for documentary
filmmaking came from, I found an interview called
“Broadcasting Today” he did for Middlesex University.
In the interview he talked about how going up
Iranian-British, made him have a fascination with the
middle-east. He realized his interest for film making
when he was in school, as he was always picking up
a camera. At college he looked at Louis Theroux for
inspiration and Nick Broomfield.

Reggie Yates
Another person that I have taken a lot of inspiration from,
is Reggie Yates, I have watched a lot of the documentary's
that he has presented, and been behind. I have also seen
the shows that he has done for BBC Radio 1, as a radio
presenter. Reggie has done a series of documentary’s
called “Extreme Russia” exploring three different
communities within contemporary Russia, and what it’s
like for young people that live there. He also did a
documentary called “The Insider” where it sees him live
life for real, inside some of the most brutal institutions. I’m
a big fan of his work, because I also feel that he is honest
and explores the topic to it’s full potential so the viewer is
fully informed.
Research
Another person that I have found inspiration in
is TV Presenter, Journalist and Documentary
Filmmaker, Stacey Dooley. She has made
some really good documentary’s, I like the way
that she interviews people, and how she
thoroughly explores topics that she’s covering.
I also like the genre of topics that she covers,
they can range from exposing the wool
industry, to then becoming face to face with
ISIS. I like the backing music that Stacey uses
in her documentary’s. I also like how honest
she is and how she connects with the viewer.

Research
Another person that I have found great
influence in, is BBC Investigative
Journalist and Presenter, Ellie Flynn. I
really like how she uses undercover tactics
to expose issues, affecting people across
the UK. I have found that her
documentary's have left me wanting to
create my own, and I think that her
documentary’s are partly reason I like to
make my own ones covering real life
issues, just in the way of Radio.

Research
During my research stage, I have found a number of articles and watched a several interviews, on
people that I have got inspiration out of. One of them interviews being produced by Middlesex
University, they had the Filmmaker and investigative Journalist for the BBC, Ben Zand, I got a lot from
this interview, Ben talked about his early life, before he got in to making documentary’s, this interview
gave me understanding of his work and how he came to have such a break through. What I like about
Ben’s style of documentary making, is that he goes to the places that he is talking about, and he
conducts interviews, with people that can give the viewer more information on the topic that is being
covered. I also like his professional and friendly approach that he has. I also read an article on New
Musical Express (NME) it was about Greg James, the BBC Radio 1 presenter, embarking on becoming
the new face of the Radio 1 Breakfast Show. This article helped me understand the mind of one of the
country’s top radio presenters. What I liked about this article was, how Greg spoke about always
getting the listeners involved.
After watching a number of Ben’s documentary’s, that has given inspiration and that’s why I have
decided to do a documentary and conduct interviews, after listening to a number of Greg James,
shows that has given me inspiration when it comes to creating, music beds and I also take away
inspiration from the langue that he uses. I got a lot of inspiration from BBC Radio 4’s Brexit
documentary’s, I like how they were put together and liked how they flowed well. I also liked the music
that used throughout them and sound effects, I took this inspiration, and in 2017 I created my own
Radio Documentary based on Brexit.
Research
Radio Podcasts are similar to Radio Documentary’s, they offer a lot more range, in regards to topic, for example the BBC
have produced a lot of podcast’s you can get many different types, factual, music, comedy and drama. BBC Radio 1,
produced a podcast called “Life Hacks” that looks at factual, real life issues that are effecting people, Sex, Relationships
and Mental Health, I have found after listening to podcasts produced by the BBC and other people, that they tend to be
quite relaxed, and informal. I have produced both a podcast and documentary before and explored both, creating a
documentary for the topic I want to cover would be best, because I have watched documentary’s from lots of different
people, and I have seen how they present themselves and help get the message of the documentary across, with having
done a radio podcast and documentary in the past, I am familiar with both, it would be beneficial to me I think, to put the
skills on show that I have learnt, and doing it in this format would help me do that. There’s also something different when it
comes to watching a documentary on TV and listening to a podcast, first of all, one has visuals and the other doesn’t, and
listening to a radio documentary or podcast gives you the freedom to create any image in your head that you want. Also
radio documentary making has been around for years and is widely used as a form of audio expression, I have also
decided to do it in this format, because I think that I can make a thought provoking, and educational piece and as I’ve said,
a documentary would be the best way to put this across. Also the the difference between a podcast and a radio
documentary, is that a podcast is usually a series of episodes, with a personal tone, podcast also allow you to be honest
and open-hearted and allows the listeners to part of your journey, where as with a radio documentary, there isn’t very little
interaction with the listeners, is very much already set out, and tends to be fully scripted, unlike a podcast where it is less
scripted and also with a podcast you can push the boundaries, knowing that you can edit it later on.

BBC Radio 1, produced a podcast called “Life Hacks” that looks at factual, real life issues that are effecting people, Sex, Relationships and Mental Health, I have found after listening to podcasts produced by the BBC and other people, that they tend to be quite relaxed, and informal. I have produced both a podcast and documentary before and explored both, creating a documentary for the topic I want to cover would be best, because I have watched documentary’s from lots of different people, and I have seen how they present themselves and help get the message of the documentary across, with having done a radio podcast and documentary in the past, I am familiar with both, it would be beneficial to me I think, to put the skills on show that I have learnt, and doing it in this format would help me do that. There’s also something different when it comes to watching a documentary on TV and listening to a podcast, first of all, one has visuals and the other doesn’t, and listening to a radio documentary or podcast gives you the freedom to create any image in your head that you want. Also radio documentary making has been around for years and is widely used as a form of audio expression, I have also decided to do it in this format, because I think that I can make a thought provoking, and educational piece and as I’ve said, a documentary would be the best way to put this across. Also the the difference between a podcast and a radio documentary, is that a podcast is usually a series of episodes, with a personal tone, podcast also allow you to be honest and open-hearted and allows the listeners to part of your journey, where as with a radio documentary, there isn’t very little interaction with the listeners, is very much already set out, and tends to be fully scripted, unlike a podcast where it is less scripted and also with a podcast you can push the boundaries, knowing that you can edit it later on.
