It was therefore disappointing to learn that Holden
had decided to cease manufacturing in Australia
from 2017. Coupled with the exit of Ford, this
decision is expected to have a significant impact
on local component suppliers.
In order to get a better understanding of the
implications for individual businesses, Council
convened a roundtable forum with component
suppliers on 18th December 2013. The primary
purpose was to hear from local companies the
degree to which their businesses will be impacted
by the recent decisions of Ford and Holden.
Council also wanted to understand the types of
support and transition assistance that would

Volume 1 • 2014

most efficiently and effectively help these
businesses to diversify into new markets,
move into new areas of production and to
retrain their employees.
Following this forum Kingston’s Mayor, Cr Paul
Peulich, wrote to the Premier outlining the
concerns and suggestions from local companies.
In particular, the Mayor emphasised that it was
imperative for any transition assistance to flow
through the whole supply chain. A follow-up
meeting was held on 23rd January to further
develop a strategy to meet the challenges these
businesses are facing.
Council will continue to work with local
automotive component manufacturers and the
State and Federal Governments, to minimise the
negative impacts of international decisions on the
local community.

From the editor
Happy New Year. I hope 2014 is
a prosperous one for all of
Kingston’s business community.
At the beginning of each year, we muse about
what the next twelve months might hold.
Unfortunately the future is not ours to see so
we can only deal with what is known and
what can reasonably be expected.
One of the “knowns” is that technology will
continue to drive business efficiency and
competitiveness. Buyer behaviour has clearly
shiſted with consumers doing more and more
of their research on products and services
online. This not only applies to the retail
consumer but also to business-to-business
buyers. Consequently, if your online presence
is less than adequate, you will be missing out
on potential sales.
Outlined in this bulletin, you will find a variety
of opportunities to improve the online aspect
of your business. I encourage you to take
advantage of those workshops, seminars and
networking opportunities that are relevant to
you. You may also benefit from having a team
of Monash University students work with you
on an IT project.
Council has recently updated our own website
and would now like to ensure that as many
businesses as possible are registered on
Kingston’s online business directory which
will help boost your own search engine
optimisation. Even if you are currently
registered I urge you to update your entry to
make sure it contains current information.
Please feel free to contact the Economic
Development team if there is anything that
you think we may be able to help you with.

Planning Basics
Everyone wants their
business to prosper, grow
and succeed.
It takes creativity, discipline, energy and
planning to make that happen. What if growth
happens faster than you expected or slower
than you were hoping? What if you get ill or a
business partner leaves? You need to consider
these and many more questions if you are to
create and sustain a successful business.

Kingston City Council invites
business owners to get
together after work at a local
venue situated in the
industrial precincts of
Kingston on a quarterly
rotational basis.

Kingston Businesses to Benefit from IT
Student Projects

OECD recognition for
south east Melbourne

Kingston Council is offering
another practical support
program open to local business,
encouraging business owners to
take the next step in their
development by tapping into
the skills of Monash University’s
IT students.

The Organisation for Economic
Cooperation and Development (OECD)
has included the South East Melbourne
Innovation Precinct (SEMIP) as a case
study in its recently released report,
Innovation-driven Growth in Regions:
The Role of Smart Specialisation. The
OECD is a forum where governments
work together to address the economic,
social and environmental challenges
of globalization.

During 2013, a sample of Kingston businesses
who participated in the Kingston – Glen Eira
Mentor Partners Program were given the
opportunity to participate in the student
project program. The results were positive,
providing small local businesses with new
tools they would not otherwise have had the
confidence or financial investment to achieve.
In 2014, Kingston businesses will again
benefit from student projects to help grow
their business through increasing their IT
system capabilities and web presence.
Business owners work with a dedicated team
of final year IT students who are available to

develop customised web-based systems and
databases to help businesses improve their
processes and grow their business. The
projects in turn provide students with practical
experience in real-life business settings.
There is no cost to business other than time
and commitment; based on businesses having
the IT hardware capabilities. All projects are
facilitated by a program coordinator. This offer
is available through a joint initiative with Glen
Eira City Council’s BusEd program –linking
business and education.

“Smart Specialisation” is a policy framework
combining industrial, educational and innovation
policies that promote new growth opportunities. The
“Smart Specialisation” approach suggests that
countries or regions should identify and select a
limited number of priority areas for knowledgebased investments, focusing on a region's strengths
and comparative advantages.

Limited places are available, applications
close February 2014.
The university will ultimately decide which
projects are the best fit to meet their criteria.
If you would like to know more about the
program and how your business could benefit
from assistance with developing a website, ecommerce or IT systems, then contact the
program coordinator, Sandy Brouvalis on 0438
507 010 or email
sbrouvalis@mentorpartners.com.au

The City of Kingston has been an active participant
in the SEMIP initiative since its inception in 2009.
This initiative is a partnership between the cities of
Kingston, Knox, Greater Dandenong and Monash
together with the Australian Synchrotron, CSIRO,
Monash University, the Centre for Nanofabrication,
the Small Technologies Cluster and the Victorian
Government.
The primary objective of SEMIP is to facilitate
connections between the advanced manufacturing
sector and the region’s world class research
institutions to grow the economic prosperity of
the region.
The report can be found at www.oecd.org/sti/inno/
smart-specialisation.pdf - page 96.

The Melbourne South East group, made up of

Kingston Business Bulletin- Feb 2014 - Read all the latest on business news in the City of Kingston

  • 1. Business Bulletin taking care of business in Kingston in this edition Kingston Sustainable Business Network Breakfast Photo Courtesy of Metalsa Australia 6 Free digital training programs for business Automotive supply chain The City of Kingston is one of Victoria’s most important industrial locations with local companies providing over 17,000 jobs in manufacturing. A number are involved in the automotive sector. 3 “Know Your Customer” Kingston Demographic Booklets 2 9581 4735 kingston.vic.gov.au/business It was therefore disappointing to learn that Holden had decided to cease manufacturing in Australia from 2017. Coupled with the exit of Ford, this decision is expected to have a significant impact on local component suppliers. In order to get a better understanding of the implications for individual businesses, Council convened a roundtable forum with component suppliers on 18th December 2013. The primary purpose was to hear from local companies the degree to which their businesses will be impacted by the recent decisions of Ford and Holden. Council also wanted to understand the types of support and transition assistance that would Volume 1 • 2014 most efficiently and effectively help these businesses to diversify into new markets, move into new areas of production and to retrain their employees. Following this forum Kingston’s Mayor, Cr Paul Peulich, wrote to the Premier outlining the concerns and suggestions from local companies. In particular, the Mayor emphasised that it was imperative for any transition assistance to flow through the whole supply chain. A follow-up meeting was held on 23rd January to further develop a strategy to meet the challenges these businesses are facing. Council will continue to work with local automotive component manufacturers and the State and Federal Governments, to minimise the negative impacts of international decisions on the local community. For further information contact Suzanne Ferguson on 9581 4712. February 2014 Kingston Business Bulletin 1
  • 2. “Know Your Customer” Kingston Demographic Booklets Now Available From the editor Happy New Year. I hope 2014 is a prosperous one for all of Kingston’s business community. At the beginning of each year, we muse about what the next twelve months might hold. Unfortunately the future is not ours to see so we can only deal with what is known and what can reasonably be expected. One of the “knowns” is that technology will continue to drive business efficiency and competitiveness. Buyer behaviour has clearly shiſted with consumers doing more and more of their research on products and services online. This not only applies to the retail consumer but also to business-to-business buyers. Consequently, if your online presence is less than adequate, you will be missing out on potential sales. Outlined in this bulletin, you will find a variety of opportunities to improve the online aspect of your business. I encourage you to take advantage of those workshops, seminars and networking opportunities that are relevant to you. You may also benefit from having a team of Monash University students work with you on an IT project. Council has recently updated our own website and would now like to ensure that as many businesses as possible are registered on Kingston’s online business directory which will help boost your own search engine optimisation. Even if you are currently registered I urge you to update your entry to make sure it contains current information. Please feel free to contact the Economic Development team if there is anything that you think we may be able to help you with. Suzanne Ferguson Manager Economic Development CITY OF KINGSTON It always seems impossible until it is done. Nelson Mandela 2 Kingston Business Bulletin February 2014 Kingston Council has created a suite of demographic booklets on specific Kingston retail precincts to help businesses better target their offer to attract local shoppers. The comprehensive “Know Your Customer” booklets individually look at the catchment demographics for shopping areas in: • • • • • • • • • • Chelsea Cheltenham Clarinda Dingley Village Highett Mentone Moorabbin Mordialloc Parkdale Patterson Lakes This work was funded under the State Government’s “Streetlife” project which supports local retailers in suburban shopping strips and hubs. The “Know Your Customer” booklets can be accessed online at www.kingston.vic.gov.au/business/ Kingston-Business/Retail or you can obtain a free hardcopy by emailing Council’s business unit at business@kingston.vic.gov.au or call 9581 4735. Make safe, buy safe, sell safe. If you supply businesses and consumers with goods and product-related services in Australia, you must comply with product safety requirements under the Australian Consumer Law (ACL). Everyone in the supply chain must keep up-to-date with the ACL – including suppliers, manufacturers, importers, distributors, hirers and retailers. Get it right from the beginning. Whether you manufacture, import or purchase your stock from local suppliers, you must ensure the products you purchase are safe and meet Australian product safety standards. Relying solely on statements by the manufacturer and supplier that the products are safe is not a substitute for implementing your own quality checks or procedures. Mandatory safety standards apply to products that can pose hazards - such as children’s toys and safety equipment - and require them to comply with particular rules relating to performance, composition, contents, methods of manufacture or processing, design, construction, finish or packaging. with information to help them decide whether a good or product-related service is appropriate for them. For more information, view the Product Safety Australia website http://www.productsafety.gov.au/ What happens if the product is unsafe? If you recall a product, you must notify the Commonwealth Minister within 48 hours. For more information, view the Submit a recall page on the Product Safety Recalls Australia website. • 5. Meet Your Mates Business Planning Basics Everyone wants their business to prosper, grow and succeed. It takes creativity, discipline, energy and planning to make that happen. What if growth happens faster than you expected or slower than you were hoping? What if you get ill or a business partner leaves? You need to consider these and many more questions if you are to create and sustain a successful business. Kingston City Council invites business owners to get together after work at a local venue situated in the industrial precincts of Kingston on a quarterly rotational basis. Melbourne Youth2Business (Y2B) Network Breakfast These business networking events are attended by business owners for the purposes of getting to know “who’s who on the block” and to potentially establish new business relationships with neighbouring businesses. • 7. Kingston Businesses to Benefit from IT Student Projects OECD recognition for south east Melbourne Kingston Council is offering another practical support program open to local business, encouraging business owners to take the next step in their development by tapping into the skills of Monash University’s IT students. The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has included the South East Melbourne Innovation Precinct (SEMIP) as a case study in its recently released report, Innovation-driven Growth in Regions: The Role of Smart Specialisation. The OECD is a forum where governments work together to address the economic, social and environmental challenges of globalization. During 2013, a sample of Kingston businesses who participated in the Kingston – Glen Eira Mentor Partners Program were given the opportunity to participate in the student project program. The results were positive, providing small local businesses with new tools they would not otherwise have had the confidence or financial investment to achieve. In 2014, Kingston businesses will again benefit from student projects to help grow their business through increasing their IT system capabilities and web presence. Business owners work with a dedicated team of final year IT students who are available to develop customised web-based systems and databases to help businesses improve their processes and grow their business. The projects in turn provide students with practical experience in real-life business settings. There is no cost to business other than time and commitment; based on businesses having the IT hardware capabilities. All projects are facilitated by a program coordinator. This offer is available through a joint initiative with Glen Eira City Council’s BusEd program –linking business and education. “Smart Specialisation” is a policy framework combining industrial, educational and innovation policies that promote new growth opportunities. The “Smart Specialisation” approach suggests that countries or regions should identify and select a limited number of priority areas for knowledgebased investments, focusing on a region's strengths and comparative advantages. Limited places are available, applications close February 2014. The university will ultimately decide which projects are the best fit to meet their criteria. If you would like to know more about the program and how your business could benefit from assistance with developing a website, ecommerce or IT systems, then contact the program coordinator, Sandy Brouvalis on 0438 507 010 or email sbrouvalis@mentorpartners.com.au The City of Kingston has been an active participant in the SEMIP initiative since its inception in 2009. This initiative is a partnership between the cities of Kingston, Knox, Greater Dandenong and Monash together with the Australian Synchrotron, CSIRO, Monash University, the Centre for Nanofabrication, the Small Technologies Cluster and the Victorian Government. The primary objective of SEMIP is to facilitate connections between the advanced manufacturing sector and the region’s world class research institutions to grow the economic prosperity of the region. The report can be found at www.oecd.org/sti/inno/ smart-specialisation.pdf - page 96. For more information on SEMIP activities phone Suzanne Ferguson on 9581 4712.
