- Good morning everyone! My name is Felix and here are my group mates, (Min, Simon, Sangitha, Anne, Vimal, Sumer, Mijin, Rand & Laila). Today, we are going to learn about Hermeneutic, pronounce as HER – MER – NUE – TICK as written there.
- Well, this is what we will be going to through today: • The definition of hermeneutics and its purpose. • How do we interpret? • And lastly, what do we do to interpret correctly. But first, I would like to show you a video before we start. From to your reaction, I can tell you are laughing because you think it another way round. But if a small girl looks at it, she will not feel the same way. Well, this is what we are going to discuss today.
- The word hermeneutics is said to have had its origin in the name Hermes, the Greek god whose role was the interpreter of the messages of the gods. Hermeneutic is the art or principles of interpretation (interpret the meaning of a text/text analogue) Simply put, it is an art of understanding
- This understanding may includes written, verbal and nonverbal communication Written: book, quote, message Verbal: conversation, voice message, song Nonverbal: action, sign
- For example, what if you wrote this message to a friend, and it was found 2000 years later Anyone can tell me what does that message saying? - The final is over. Let’s go and party tonight
- Suppose the future reader would not understand: The culture of the sender: college boy Choice of word: dude, floored The English language: hammered
- There are 2 main purposes of Hermeneutic
- It is to aid human understanding To get at the plain meaning of the context To understand what people say and do and why Hermeneutic suggests that ‘prejudice’, pre-judgement or prior knowledge plays in important part in our understanding. In fact we cannot understand a text unless we have some understanding of the language.
- Our understanding of what we hear or read is usually automatic and unconscious So to get others to understand correctly, the way we understand it, we have to convey the context to them, stemming from a cultural context So, the other purpose is to produce a story that is believable But, does everyone actually share the same understanding, how did we get to that understand in the first place?
- This is a really interesting example of interpretation. Can you read that? According to a research at Cambridge University, it doesn’t matter in what order the letters in a word are. The important thing is that the first and last letter be in the right place. So as long as they are, you can still read it without problem. It is said that only 55% people in the world can read this. But I believe we all can read it without much trouble right.
- Nevertheless, everyone in this room, everyone in the world is an interpreter
- When we interact or communicate, the meanings are developed within our brain. However, those meanings are indefinable since it can be constructed depend on the environment The same words can mean different things to different people; different words can mean the same things. (Schawabenland, 2006) If people share common sense, then they share a definition of the situation (Wikipedia) So the existing knowledge plays an important part in our understanding Therefore, we usually subconsciously understand something with the first thought that comes to our mind
- There are many factors that may affect our understanding: Personal opinion, Culture, Historical circumstances, Expectation, Education background, Personality and so on We need to become aware of how our own views, biases, culture and personal history have a significant impact on how we view the world. So, what do we do in order to understand something? We will let you know after the break (10 minutes)
- Let’s say we have something that we want to understand. A class project, a book, a person. What do we do to have a better understanding? There are 7 rules of interpretation.
- What does the word or action mean? Define your terms and then keep to the terms defined - Words can have different meanings, and maybe hidden meaning as well Set the table there: put something in a position Set the table: prepare the cutlery and plates on the table Set the computer: get the equipment ready A set of ____: A group of something A film set: A place where the film is made Anybody can give me some example of things (word/ action) that can mean different things?
- The meaning must be gathered from the context Understand what comes before and after what you are looking at Have a close look at the situation In this example, both pictures have the same visual, yet they convey a different message. And that shows how important a context can be when we are interpreting something. So we going to show you guys a part of music video of Miley Cyrus (http://vimeo.com/68714449) Focus on how you feel when you watch it, what emotion does it deliver, from the song and the video And now, we have the same exact video, but without the music but only original sounds (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7csZON-IxxI) How do you feel? Do you feel connect with the video after the music is off? From these 2 videos, we can see the different between the one that has music and the one that doesn’t. Without the context (the music), the music video has no more meaning to it. So we can see how important context actually is.
- Who is the target? What is the purpose/ reason of the context? The usage of the context can be found through looking at the previous 2: definition and context Example: This picture is The Execution of A Vietcong Guerilla. In this image, we see a Vietnamese firing a bullet point blank into a Viet Cong prisoner. The war depicted in this photograph is man against man, not the complex war of bombs, defoliation, and unseen enemies. For this case, the usage of the image was to depict the indiscriminate brutality of the war
- It is a must to have some knowledge of the background The awareness of the life and society of the context If we can study the background of the context, without adding any of our own culture/background on our own, we have much better chance capture an accurate meaning For example: After the Vietnam war, many have fled to Australia after the fall of South Vietnam, and some of them did blame North Vietnam for taken away their home Vietnam. Now, whenever any Vietnamese mentioned that war in Australia, they tent to get beaten up.
- Interpretation is merely logical reasoning The use of reason is everywhere to be assumed Does the interpretation make sense? Example: - Do you mind if I take this chair? Yeah sure (In this case it means: No, I don’t mind. Go ahead”
- An inference is a fact reasonably implied from another fact. It is a logical consequence (studied in the field of logic), an educated guess It basically a understanding that concluded based observation of patterns of facts, although it may not always be true true (false conclusion) Example: 1. All meat comes from animals 2. Beef is a type meat 3. Therefore, beef comes from an animal 1. All apples are fruit 2. Bananas are fruit 3. Therefore, bananas are apples.
- For this we have a video to show you, after you watched, tell me what you think genre judgment is in the rules of interpretation So what do you think Genre Judgment is?
- Beauty, knowledge comes in different shape and style Each of which has certain characteristics that must be recognized in order to understand it correctly You guys are doing a self promotion, so each of you will have a different style, based on how you want yourself to look like to clients So how do we apply those rules in our daily life?
- Let’s check out Facebook, one of the most common platform where Hermeneutic occurs nowadays Facebook allows us to post up pictures and allow people to put their comments and likes
- So here is a picture that uploaded on Facebook by 9gag. What do you see in this picture/visual? As we know, everyone is an interpretor Facebook is where a lot of interpretation happens I see 2 happy boys with no brain and 1 sad boy standing behind with a brain What does that even mean? So as the picture is shared and comments and liked. Facebook pin up those with the most like, in this case, a comment from JB Gargar: No Brain No Pain. This is how he interpreted the image. And with the number of likes, it shows that he is so far the best interpreter for the image.
- An image of egyptians drawing/ signs What we can tell from the captions is ‘this is what really happens during group work’ And the best interpretion of the visual is ‘Bad Ps is Bad’ Everyone agrees Everyone do enjoy reading the top comments Hilarious, People interpret out of the box, how we see other people understand/analyse visual

- This is an interpretation game, in this game….. The theme for the name are Movies Character (After 1 round): Let’s do it for another round, more chance for Candy!
- Throughout these slides/ facilitation, we can concluded that there are few rules/ principles to follow to interpret a particular subject And through this workshop, we’ve proved that everyone of us, coming from different countries, with different cultures and languages, has their own point of view individually We use our own knowledge to apply hermeneutics on our daily life, which is using our own way to deliver what we understand.
