Speed5G Workshop 7.03.2018, London 3
4. Marconi was a determined guy
4 Born in 1874, by 1895 he had succeeded in transmitting a signal just over a
mile ‒ but the Italian Ministry of Posts & Telegraphs scribbled ‘to the
Longara’ on his report,
4 Marconi travelled to London and was introduced to William Preece,
engineer-in-chief to the General Post Office – a forerunner of today's BT.
And Preece listened!
Speed5G Workshop 7.03.2018, London 4
4 In July 1896, Marconi successfully demonstrated
his wireless telegraphy system by sending a signal
between two Post Office buildings in central
London, 300m apart,
4 Right now we are on one of those sites, where the
Central Telegraph Office stood – and the plaque
shown is on the front of the building.
