Energy cluster
Group of companies
and organizations in a
specific geographic
region
They are involved in
the production,
distribution and use of
energy
Energy clusters may
focus on a specific type
of energy, such as
renewable energy or
fossil fuels
Companies and
organizations within an
energy cluster often
work together to share
resources, knowledge
and expertise to
improve the efficiency
Types of Energy Cluster
We can distinguish them by the
specific area of expertise:
• Renewable Energy cluster
• Fossil fuel cluster
• Nuclear Energy cluster
• Bioenergy cluster
• Smart grid cluster
• Energy storage cluster
The purpose of
Energy cluster
• To produce, distribute and use the Energy
• Share knowledge, resources and expertises to
improve efficiency
• Promoting innovation
• Increasing competitiveness
• Enhancing regional development
• Facilitating knowledge transfer
• Attracting investment
Ruhr area in
Germany
• One of the first industrial regions in the world
• Long history of coal mining and energy production
dating back to the 18th century
• Area of 445 ha, 7% is industrial area
• In the prime time, there were more than 170
mines, which hired 500 000 people
• The sum of gathered coal could reach almost 150
millions of tons
• One of the power plant which was built in Ruhr
area could obtain 752MW
Polish’s energy clusters
The number of polish
energy clusters is growing.
Most of them are located in
Katowice, Cracow, Warsaw,
Wrocław, Zgorzelec and on
the coast of Baltic sea -
Gdańsk area.
Zgorzelec ZKlaster
- Located in Lower Silesian county
- Started in 2017
- Consists of: RSE prosuments, 2
universities, 2 council governments, a
heating plant company and the
Distribution System Operator
- Recent developments: 9,8 MW wind
power plant, 21 MW PV projects, electric
vehicles introduction
Purposes of ZKlaster
• effective power regulation - balancing demand and supply,
• constant and sustainable growth of renewable sources of energy
• using 100% of produced power within the region for own needs of
the participants of the cluster
• improving the distributed generation system and prosument systems
• effective way to produce, distribute and consume the energy within
the cluster
• improving the energy safety and independence of the region
Słupsk energy cluster
- Located: at the coast, near
Gdańsk
- First agreement signed in
2017
- Enterprises/installations that
take part in it are: PV and
wind turbines installations,
local waterworks company,
biorefinery (cogeneration
CHP)
Słupsk cluster - biorefinery
Energy use
Lastly, the energy is used for
the demand in the city of
Słupsk and other power
plant’s clients.
The surpluses of energy go to:
electricity:
- powering the company’s
demand
heat:
- a waterpark or end use
object working whole
year
Used fuels
Among used fuels there are:
- sewage from Słupsk’s
sewage treatment plant
- biowaste
- waste from oil - water
separation
- green waste
- unstabilized waste from
different sewage
treatment plants
Processes of fermentation
and energy production
From that fuel the energy is
produced, where important is
that it’s both electricity and
heat. Biogas and bio fertilizer
can be produced as well.
It can be done by methods:
- fermentation
- hydrolysis
Ideas of improvements
Increasing the use of
renewable energy sources
such as wind, solar, and
biomass in energy clusters.
Implementing energy efficiency
measures in industrial facilities
within the clusters, such as
upgrading equipment and using
energy-efficient lighting and
HVAC systems.
Developing smart grid
technology to improve the
management and distribution
of energy within the clusters.
Encouraging collaboration and
information sharing among the
companies within the clusters to
promote innovation and
efficiency.
Ideas of improvements
Establishing research and
development centers focused
on energy within the clusters to
drive technological
advancement and innovation.
Investing in energy storage
systems to ensure a stable
energy supply and reduce
dependence on fossil fuels.
Creating incentives for
companies within the clusters
to reduce their carbon
emissions and become more
sustainable.
Promoting energy education
and training programs for
employees within the clusters to
increase awareness and
understanding of energy-
efficient practices.
