The document contains several news articles on various topics including: declining faith in the Catholic church due to sexual abuse scandals; a documentary on Michael Jackson's alleged sexual abuse being screened at Sundance; trends in dating apps like "pocketing" and "cookie jaring"; statistics on increasing diversity and education levels among younger generations in the US; effects of legalized marijuana on opioid overdoses; and transgender people awaiting a legal decision on military service bans. The document discusses effects these topics could have on the music and entertainment industries such as needing to appeal to broader audiences, addressing sensitive topics carefully, and considering digital aspects in romantic storylines.
2. Sociological News
Summary
The Pew Research Center shows there is a stark increase in the amount of minority groups and ethnic diversity in the United States. Only 52% of
Americans are non-Hispanic white. These ethnicities and minorities are increasing their education as well. Researchers attribute this in large part
to the decreasing immigration patterns after the Great Recession, and the new generation of US-born Hispanics pursuing college level education.
Effects on the Music & Entertainment Businesses
With a more diverse people group in America, music & films need to appeal to a more broader audience
than ever before. Casting directors and artist managers need to take ethnicity into account, ensuring that
a large percentage of their entertainment embraces the cultures of the minority.
An increase in education also marks an increased market for more
sophisticated art & entertainment. Script writers should pursue high concept
ideas, and musicians should consider using a more eclectic vocabulary
than “Baby, Baby.”

● In 2018, 7% were born outside the US, versus 8% in 2002.
● In 2017, 61% of 2nd gen. Hispanics were in college vs 40% of
their foreign-born counterparts
● In 2018, 59% of Post Millenials pursued college vs 53% in 2002
3. Bizarre Dating Trends to Watch out For
Sociological News
Summary
According to Tinder, new relationships spark in the beginning of a new year. As dating becomes more digital, their has become less intimacy and
exclusivity of relationships. There are three terms to be aware of in dating for this new year; pocketing, cookie jaring, and you-turning. Pocketing is
about having them, but never wanting to marry them. Cookie jarring refers to treating someone as a backup option, and you-turning is getting
involved, only to find one wrong issue that is a turn-off, and the person backs out.
Effects on the Music & Entertainment Businesses
Romance has always been a hot topic in music, and understanding these
concepts help artists know just the right songs to play on people’s heartstrings.
RomComs should also consider adding digital aspects to their dating storylines.
Being able to create characters who reflect these habits will help build a more
believable and emotional connection to the audience.

4. Catholics are losing faith due to sexual abuse scandals
Summary
In 2018, the catholic church began to uncover widespread, undercover sexual abuse scandals. Some of the numbers include 1,000 children
abused in Pennsylvania, and 3,600 In Germany. In the year 2017, polls showed that 49% of catholics had a high faith in the ethical standards of
clergy, but after 2018’s reveal, that number has dropped to 31%. In the U.S., the scandal has resulted in federal investigations in 12 states, and a
prominent cardinal resigning in disgrace. The pope has urged the church to unite, saying that many are more interested in concealing and
denying.
Ethical News
(Burke, D. Jan 2019)
Effects on the Music & Entertainment Businesses
Religion has always been a difficult ground for the arts to touch on.
Understanding this new shift means we need to be even more sensitive to
Catholics and people of the Christian faith. Films and songs which mock or
jokingly tease at sexual abuse by religious authorities will probably not be
received well, whereas ones which take it seriously might attract people seeking a
chance to understand what happened with the Catholic church. Either way,
entertainment has historically tended to reflect poorly on the Catholic church, as
seen in such films as the Tale of Despereaux, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and
Monty Python’s the Meaning of Life to name a few.
5. Documentary on Michael Jackson’s Sexual Abuse is at Sundance
Summary
Leaving Neverland is a new documentary coming to Sundance which unveils the alleged long term sexual abuse of two boys by Michael Jackson.
The testimony shares how, at the peak of his fame, Jackson sexually abused 7 and 10 year old boys at the Neverland Ranch. Both boys are now
grown men with families who detail how the sustained exploitation and deception of a celebrity show the power of super stars in leveraging star-
struck families.
Ethical News
(McNary, D. Jan 2019)
Effects on the Music & Entertainment Businesses
The fact this documentary is accepted in Sundance reveals the growing trend of
confronting sexual abuse in the entertainment industry. Business managers
working in entertainment need to learn how to identify sexual predators, and know
what appropriate actions should be taken. Artist managers and talent acquisition
teams will need to conduct more in-depth background checks to assure that
actors do not have a shady history. Workplace environments must also be
reshaped to reduce sexual misconduct. A few examples would be more
transparent offices and strict policies towards vulgar behaviour.
6. Trump’s Shutdown Surrender Adds Pressure
to Secure China Trade Win
Summary:
President Trump will turn his attention from a fight with congressional
Democrats for a bigger challenge, China. Trade talks with Beijing on
Wednesday in Washington kicking off a month long sprint of
negotiations between two nation that could be more difficult than his
attempts at getting funds from congress. The negotiations come at a
critical moment due to the the slow on trade because of the president's
policies.
Effects on the Music & Entertainment Businesses:
This may change the way way we trade with China by bettering or
worsening our standing with them. This could be for better or for worse
in the long run, if this improves our political standings with China it would
work well for the country.

7. Fortnite maker Epic Games earns 'F' rating
from Better Business Bureau
Summary:
Fortnite has received the worst rating you can get from the better business bureau
due to a large amount of complaints about the game, most of which pertaining to
refunds. Epic games also hasn't responded to the bureau even after they have tried to
contact them on multiple occasions. Many people being wronged by scams have yet
to get refunds or even hear back from customer service.
Effects on the Music & Entertainment Businesses:
This is going to have an impact on the gaming side of the entertainment industry. With
fortnite being one of the most popular free to play games out right now, people ma
have a harder time trusting these types of games after this situation. People may not
want to give out their info which would make these companies lose money. We may
end up seeing a decline in free to play games which will be hard on people that can't
afford to buy the triple A titles.

8. Transgender service members await legal
decision on military ban
Summary
The supreme court recently struck down on two injunctions to cases that
questioned the constitutionality of a trump administration that would severely
restrict the presence of transgender people in the military. This is commonly
referred to as the mattis policy, the mattis policy would allow transgender service
members who have already transitioned to stay in the military, other transgender
service members would also be able to publicly claim they are transgender, however
those same people would have to remain their biological sex. They would also not
be able to transition.
Effects
I think this will end up giving the military a worse reputation than it already has. People are
suppose to be free to fight for their country and this is showing that is not quite the case
anymore. I think this will start rallies and protests and turn it into something much bigger
than it is right now because how sensitive people are these days.

9. Study shows legal access to marijuana
reduces opioid overdoses
Summary
Dr. Rhet smith a professor at the university of little rock recently ran
a study that showed countries that have medical marijuana or
recreational marijuana have a 6 to 8 percent opioid-related deaths
among white men. Medical marijuana is expected to be available in
Arkansas in a few months. In the state, overdose deaths have been
steadily climbing. In 2013, crime labs report 180 overdose deaths.
In 2018, it was up to 340.
Effects on the music and entertainment industry
I think this will have a very positive effect on the music industry,
recently a lot of rappers have been dying due to overdoses on
opioids. If we get everyone of the pills and on to marijuana only this
could have a very positive effect on the culture and the future.

10. Google investment arm capitalG leads $100
million investment in data tech firm collibra
Summary Tech
Collibra specializes in so called ( data governance
technology) that lets companies manage their corporate
data so the can adhere to regulatory standards, as well as
tracking who can access certain files and other information
Effects on the music and entertainment industry
I think this will have a negative effect because being able to
see too much information is never a good thing. Having
privacy should be respected, and looking past that privacy
can get you in trouble in the future.

11. ‘Market on tenterhooks’ as investors await
latest earnings from big tech
Summary Tech
Apple CEO Tim Cook already warned that revenue for the company’s first fiscal quarter, which ended
on Dec. 29, would be 15 per cent weaker than expected, blaming the shortfall on iPhone sales in China.
Although the company, which shocked analysts last year by announcing it would no longer publish
iPhone sales numbers before posting an earnings miss, has already announced its bad news, analysts
are still in the dark over guidance. Should those numbers fail to impress, it would suggest to
Hargreaves that the company’s issues have seeped into its other products and other geographical
locations. Even though Apple’s stock has plunged more than 33 per cent since hitting a peak in
October, it remains a risky play.
Effects on the music and entertainment industry
I think this will have a negative effect on the entertainment industry because apple is the
most dominate phone company in the US and maybe even the world. I think it will make it
harder to communicate with everybody if apple start to lose their popularity.

Linda said that we must present it like a professional news organization. APA formatting is not required. (Kristian recommends at least throwing the news link at the end slide to show where we pulled our research)
Each slide must answer: How does this affect the music & entertainment business?
