More Than Just an Oscar
1. More Than Just an Oscar: It’s the World
Us Kseniya
On the night of February 28th, 2016, something
amazing happened.
Actually, a lot of amazing things happened.
First, Leonardo DiCaprio’s decades long wait for an Oscar finally ended.
Second, a legendary Internet meme had to be laid to rest, thanks to that award.
And most importantly, Leonardo DiCaprio said something amazing during his
speech.
Leonardo has always been known for being an outspoken advocate for climate
action. He’s even bought an island just to build an eco-friendly resort on it! But
on this night, he took an opportunity during his acceptance speech to let the
world know what really matters to him: the world’s climate. Aligning right
with the Untied Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal #13, Climate Action.
“Climate change is real. It is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat
affecting our entire species. We need to support leaders around the world… who
speak for all of humanity, and not those focused on greed… Let us not take this
planet for granted.”
With a world stage of who knows how many millions of people eagerly waiting
all night for this moment, Leo was proud to step up to the podium and talk
about what he was passionate about. And everything he said is probably right,
down to a T.
According to an article on the United States Geological Survey’s website,
Alaska is facing a growing crisis due to the globe’s warming climate.
“…documented changes in Alaska’s climate and hydrology have serious
implications for the state’s vast, diverse landscapes, its iconic ecosystems and
species, and the large number of native people who rely on traditions such as
subsistence hunting and fishing.”
NASA’s climate tracker website states that “Earth’s 2015 surface temperatures
were the warmest since modern record keeping began in 1880”.
2. All of this seems like very scary news that spells disaster for our mother Earth.
But that’s not a cause to sit around and panic. Activists like Leonardo DiCaprio
have spent time advocating for this cause, and so can you. And you don’t have
to buy an island to do it.
Just like Leo, you can join the League of Conservation Voters here
The LCV lets people push environmental friendliness as a priority to
government officials.
You can also follow in his footsteps by supporting actions promoted by the
National Resources Defense Council here.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s Twitter page is a treasure-trove of articles and links to
websites, like all the ones I’ve mentioned here. If you’re looking for a
sustainable, talented idol, you found your guy. But don’t just stare at his
beautiful face! Go and make a change.
It’s like he said, let us not take our one and only Earth for granted.
