communicating.

6. COMMUNICATION
You are not selling your work. You are not selling your
art. You are selling yourself by communicating YOUR
REASON for creating whatever it is you are creating.
So - You must be connected to the BIGGER
PICTURE in order to sway people into believing in
you.
Communication is EVERYTHING when it comes to selling.
Knowing yourself intimately - WHAT YOU DO and WHO YOU BE are
CRITICAL to being empowered when speaking or writing to others.
Good communication fosters a sense of connection and reiterates
your authenticity.

7. The throat is the gateway between our head and our heart. It’s the
doorway through which we express ourselves - where our energy
gathers and wants to become physically manifest. When you are well
practiced and balanced at communication, you are able to express
yourself honestly and openly with kindness, guided by your heart and
your mind.
The throat is also the vehicle for singing, music, writing, dancing and all
other forms of creative expression. When you practice good energetic
communication your confidence in your abilities skyrocket.

8. You will find that once you start your business,
half the work is talking about what you do. In
order for this to bring you money, you’ve got to
get really good at giving your potential
customers a synopsis of your work in a way that
makes them want to know you and buy from you.
You will be doing this i person via voice, and
online. This takes practice, and time. If you’re
not naturally a good writer or public speaker, I
suggest starting to find someone to help you
translate your visions and finding your “why”
(why you create what you do) - and getting
really familiar with this pitch.

Creating your Statement:
People want connection, intimacy and authenticity. Your statement about who you are, what you do and why you do it is going to be your
greatest asset to selling and creating repeat customers. You are unique - your experiences are 100% unique to you and are the reason
you are at this point today. Celebrate them and use them to your advantage! Your artist statement is a bit different from your bio. It
explains the WHY of your work - rather than the how or the what. This gives you a chance to get really poetic, and make the reader feel
things.
(*note: this is not limited to artists - if you’re a creative entrepreneur, how can you paint a picture about your products or services that
goes beyond just the “what” and into why your customers NEED what you have?)

Get creative about putting it all together in a way that makes sense - and create your
short story...Let’s look at a few examples of artist statements:
OK WTF DO I DO WITH THAT?
PETE MCCUTCHEN, PHOTOGRAPHER:
“I DECONTEXTUALIZE. THEN, I RECONSTRUCT.
LOOKING PAST THE OBVIOUS, CLOSE OBSERVATION
AND ENGAGEMENT OF THE SUBJECT IS MY
PROCESS. THE CHALLENGE IS TO SEE BEYOND THE
DISTRACTION OF THE CONSPICUOUS TO CAPTURE
ITS UNIQUE SELF. SOME OF MY SUBJECTS ARE
QUITE BEAUTIFUL, OTHERS LESS SO. MY GOAL IS TO
INSPIRE THOSE WHO SEE MY WORK TO LOOK MORE
CAREFULLY AT THE WORLD AROUND THEM, TO
DISCOVER BEAUTY IN UNUSUAL PLACES.”
I’M SURE YOU’RE THINKING...
CHARLENE FUHRMAN-SCHULZ, SUMI-É ARTIST:
“MY SUBJECT MATTER IS NATURE, WHETHER IT IS A
TRADITIONAL LANDSCAPE OR A BIRD AND FLOWER
PAINTING. I USE TRADITIONAL MATERIALS, INK AND
BRUSH ON RICE PAPER, TO CAPTURE MOVEMENT
AND LIFE — MAKING THE BRUSH DANCE AND THE
INK SING. EVERYTHING IS CAPTURED IN THE
SPONTANEOUS DANCE AND MOVEMENT OF THE
BRUSH AS IT MEETS THE RICE PAPER. THERE IS NO
GOING BACK AND CORRECTING WHEN PAINTING
WITH INK AND RICE PAPER.”
JAKE PARKER, ILLUSTRATOR
I’M A NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLING ILLUSTRATOR WHO
STARTED DRAWING LONG BEFORE I COULD FORM FULL
SENTENCES. RAISED ON CULTURAL DIET OF COMIC BOOKS,
CARTOONS, AND LEGO I DROPPED OUT COLLEGE TO PURSUE
A CAREER IN THE ANIMATION INDUSTRY. SIMULTANEOUSLY,
I ALSO ILLUSTRATED SEVERAL BOOKS AND COMICS FOR THE
PUBLISHING WORLD. IN 2009 I STARTED THE POPULAR

OF SVSLEARN.COM THAT TEACHES THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE
HOW TO BECOME A PROFESSIONAL ILLUSTRATOR LIKE
MYSELF. A HUSBAND AND FATHER OF FIVE, I CURRENTLY
WORK OUT OF MY HOME STUDIO IN GILBERT, ARIZONA.
12. CHALLENGE #1
Get creative: Take the questions above, and utilizing the examples, come up with a short paragraph synopsis if who you are and what you create. Keep it simple. YOU are the
brand. YOU are what people want - put yourself on a pedestal for a minute. Also - don’t fear. This will likely be edited and evolve over time. Start somewhere and run with it.
Write out your artist statement.

You will need to use this statement on a semi-
regular basis in different ways.
It’s helpful when you feel lost to come back to
your WHY - if nothing else to convince yourself
that being a Sole Proprietor is a good idea...
Remembering what you “represent” in the
grand scheme of things will help you calibrate
into being very believable as a “salesperson”
YOUR BIO...
ON SELLING
Let’s talk about being a salesperson for a second.
The word Sales sounds so icky - so we’re going to think
of it as sharing your work.
Remember in school you were supposed to “Show your
Work”... Well, this is why.
Being skillful at Sharing your process (authenticity) and
letting people in (intimacy) on the inner workings of
yourself is the key to communicating effectively and
turning interest into dollars.

Here’s the scenario. You meet Mr. Fancy Pants Art lover at an event - you exchange information and plan on sending him an email to connect about a future
project/commission.
What works For me is including very specific format to foster a sense of connection and respect.

TIPS

KYRA AULANI . ART
Take calls/meetings in a safe, quiet location
Call people back as soon as you can - be on time.
Have an emotional lightness if possible - positivity and neutrality at the very least - but never ambivalence!
Get really good at remembering names - people love when you say their names.
Listen intently to what someone says - try to calibrate intentions with words.
Write things down - things are important.
Be present.
Follow up. Take care of people. Be of service.
Be honest, always.
If you’re talking money - state your price and then shut your mouth... We will get into this one a bit later.
