Welcome everyone!Today we are going to celebrate EARTH DAY to start living a "greener" lifestyle, not just on Earth Day, but every day.
To begin lets start with a poll question. Is your Lions club planning a “Protecting Our Environment” service project this month?(Afterwards read results and discuss findings)
Founded in 1970 as a day of education about environmental issues, Earth Day is now a globally celebrated holiday that is sometimes extended into Earth Week, a full seven days of events focused on green awareness. The brainchild of Senator Gaylord Nelson and inspired by the antiwar protests of the late 1960s, Earth Day was originally aimed at creating a mass environmental movement. It began as a "national teach-in on the environment" and was held on April 22 to maximize the number of students that could be reached on university campuses. By raising public awareness of air and water pollution, Nelson hoped to bring environmental causes into the national spotlight.Earth Day may have been conceived in 1970, but it didn't truly go global until 1990. That year, more than 200 million people participated in environmental activities in more than 141 countries. This year, more than 1 billion people are expected to participate in 192 countries.Next we will look at some global projects that Lions did this weekend all around the world…
Hi Lions!Today is Earth Day, and in conjunction with the Protecting Our Environment global service action campaign, Lions everywhere are participating in environmental service projects that make the world are a healthier, greener, safer place. From collecting used newspapers and plastic bottles, to planting trees and cleaning our waterways, Lions do what it takes to improve and preserve the environment. Here are some projects that took place this weekend from around the globe:Lynden Lions Club in the US (Washington):Planted flowers in the local city parkChisinauLions Campus Club in Moldova: Participated in a local campaign for the sanitation and protection of green spaces Caceres Portal Do Pantanal in Brazil:This weekend the “Caceres Portal Do Pantanal” in Brazil planted trees in recognition of Earth Day.Lions Club in India District 324 A-5: planted 150 saplings for the “Protecting our environment” campaign at a local orphanage

These data that were collected through the Lions Service Active Report provide a glimpse of what Lions have been doing for the current fiscal year. A total of 840 thousand service hours were dedicated to environmental projects by reporting clubs… Tree planting was the top environmental service activity with nearly half of the total service hours dedicated to these projects. Recycling and Clean-up projects also made up a large portion of the service hours among other common activities that you can see on this slide… Reporting clubs organized more than 30 thousand environmental service activities which accounted for over 1 million service hours. The most common activities included tree planting (43%), clean up services (21%), and recycling (14%).Tree planting (43%)Clean-up (21%)Recycling (14%)Environmental PreservationEnvironmental Education Water and sanitation Other environmental projects
