These data that were collected through the Lions Service Active Report provide a glimpse of what Lions have been doing for the current fiscal year. A total of 840 thousand service hours were dedicated to environmental projects by reporting clubs… Tree planting was the top environmental service activity with nearly half of the total service hours dedicated to these projects. Recycling and Clean-up projects also made up a large portion of the service hours among other common activities that you can see on this slide… Reporting clubs organized more than 30 thousand environmental service activities which accounted for over 1 million service hours. The most common activities included tree planting (43%), clean up services (21%), and recycling (14%).Tree planting (43%)Clean-up (21%)Recycling (14%)Environmental PreservationEnvironmental Education Water and sanitation Other environmental projects
The map outlines all the countries where Lions planted trees. It illustrates our global reach and the power of Lions working together all across the globe.
Memorial Forest (Dist. 36-O, USA): Oregon Lions worked with Lion Frank Lockyear to create a Vietnam Memorial Forest. This environment project, called "Say Yes to Trees,” will plant 60,000 trees to memorialize every fallen American in Vietnam. International Reforestation Cooperation (Dist. J-1, URUGUAY): The Punte del Este and Montevideo Pocitos Lions Clubs created a local Joint Commission of Agriculture to promote the planting of 50 million trees. This reforestation effort grew from the club to the district level. Lions expanded the project by working with district governors in Georgia and Florida (USA) who donated pine seeds compatible with growing conditions in Uruguay. Trees for Africa (MD 105, ENGLAND): Lions in MD 105, in concert with the Europa Forum, financed the planting of trees in Africa through twinned clubs. European Lions financed the trees, and African Lions provided progress updates and verified the planting.Student Memorial Forest (Dist. 324-C2, INDIA): The Lions Club of Snehapuri donated trees for a school planting project. Each student watered his or her own tree. Name plates affixed to the saplings identified each tree.

One way to bring attention to the environment is through the Environmental Photo Contest. The contest is open to all Lions and provides a great opportunity for Lions to showcase their skills and the beauty of their local environment. Each multiple district can submit one photograph. If the photograph meets all of the criteria such as size, theme, and content, it will be displayed at the international convention where Lions will vote for their favorite in each category and one “best of show”. At the close of the event, the winning photographs are announced at an awards ceremony. The photographers are later presented with an engraved award by their district governor in recognition of their achievement. The winning photographs are also featured on the LCI website. Another form of recognition is through the Lions Environmental Calendar that is a compilation of photographs from the contest. Nearly all multiple district submissions are included in the calendar, which is available for purchase throughout the year.
The contest rules are available on our website. There are some important points to keep in mind when encouraging clubs to participate in the photo contest:Multiple districts can submit only one photograph, not one photograph in each categoryThe photo must measure 8” x 10” (20.3 x 25.4cm) and should not include a border The photo should not include images of people, with the exception of the special themeThe deadline for the Multiple District submission is March 1st each yearAlthough we do not regulate the contest at the club and district levels, we do encourage Lions to adhere to the suggestions we have mentioned here as this will create a more streamlined process for all participants. Again, this is an opportunity for us to reflect on the beauty of our physical environment and the importance of preserving it for future generations.
