1. SHORT BIOGRAPHY
LaMar S. McGinnis, Jr., M.D., FACS
Dr. LaMar S. McGinnis Jr. is a Past President (60th
) of the American Cancer Society, Inc.
(94-95) and a Past President (90th
) of the American College of Surgeons (09-10). A resident of
Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. McGinnis is Adjunct Professor of Surgery at the Emory University School
of Medicine and former Medical Director of the Eberhart Cancer Center of the DeKalb Medical
Center. Dr. McGinnis presently serves as the Senior Medical Advisor/Research & Cancer Control
Science @ the American Cancer Society.
Dr. McGinnis has been active in national, state and local activities for the American
Cancer Society, including Chairman of the Board and Chairman of the Executive Committee of
the Georgia Division of the American Cancer Society, and National President of ACS in 1994-
1995.
Dr. McGinnis has also served the American College of Surgeons in a variety of roles,
including a six-year term as governor (Chair, Chapter Activities, Surgical Practice in Hospitals,
HIV Infection and Nominating committees) and a ten-year term on the Commission on Cancer,
where he served as Chair, Field Liaison Committee; Chairman of the Executive Committee; and
vice chair of the Commission on Cancer. He was an American College of Surgeons’ Delegate to
the American Medical Association & Delegation Chair. (1994-2005), a Vice President of the
College (2000-2001); and is a member of the Health Policy Advisory Group. He was President
of the American College of Surgeons (2009-2010); Commissioner from the American College of
Surgeons on the Board of Commissioners of the Joint Commission; a member of the Board’s
Executive Committee and past Chair of the Governance Committee. He is also Chr. of the Board
of Joint Commission Resources/Joint Commission International, Inc.; member of the JCR
Executive Committee and Chair of the JCR Accreditation Committee. Dr. McGinnis is honorary
Professor of Surgery at the Peking Union Medical School (Beijing)
Dr. McGinnis has served as Chairman of the State of Georgia’s Governor’s Cancer
Advisory Committee.
