original works of architect Antoni Gaudi.
Most emblematic project of Gaudi’s career.
Both aesthetic and functional
Each and every part of the building is inspired
from the nature.
Common theory about casa batlo is that is prays
tribute to the legend of the Catalonian patron
Saint, Saint George, and his battle with the
dragon.
7. CASA BATLO
THE BUILDING
The Casa Batlo is an apology of joy.
A house that is a symbolic universe.

A canvas Marine inspiration, A dream world
with his organic, Nature or suggest evokes
fantastic things.
Besides its artistic value, the work has
enormous functionality.
8. CASA BATLO
ARCHITECT’S PHILOSOPHY
INSPIRATION FROM NATURE
The construction of Casa Batlo marked a new
milestone in the work of Antoni Gaudi, he completely
departed from the well known styles at that time and
8
departed from the well known styles at that time and
began to exclusively follow his architectectural
decisions.
To construct the building, he innovated many
workers, who often did not understand Gaudi’s vision
so he had to explain the meaning of each element.
The architecture and design of the Casa Batlo are an
example of Gaudi technical and therefore structural
addition and modern ornamental.
Casa Batlo is of enormous evocative power of the
Sea, Landlocked, Naturalism, The Theatricality,
Carnival And Magic.
9. CASA BATLO
CONCEPT
Inspired from a Dragon skin.
The Casa Batlo was a symbolic variation on the
legend of the patron saint of catalonia, St George.
9
The scaly façade is the body of the serpent, the
balconies gaping with the holes are the eye sockets,
the skulls of its victims, and the tower, the spear of
the serpent, is pierced by a cross topped with a blue
glazed tile (the spine of a monster) in the sun.
10. CASA BATLO
GEOMETRY
▸ Mighty pillars that appear to resemble the feet of some giant elephant
are the first thing to meet the eye of the passerby from street level.
▸ The roof reminds him of a completely different animal: it is bordered by
a jagged line similar to the backbone of a gigantic dinosaur.
▸
10
▸
▸ A facade extends between the two, including a number of small,
elegantly curved balconies that seem to stick to the front of the house
like birds' nests on the face of the cliff.
▸ The facade itself glitters in numerous colours, and small round plates
that look like fish scales are let into it. There are no edges or corners
here; even the walls are rounded in undulations and have in essence
the feel of the smooth skin of a sea serpent about them.
11. CASA BATLO
FEATUTRES
▸ Gaudi made sure that anyone walking through Casa Batlo would not feel too far
from the water.
▸ His oceanic palette englobe the visitor into a sea like promenade without turbulent
waves but with a rippling serenity.
▸
11
▸
▸ The ground floor, in particular, is rather astonishing with tracery, irregular oval
windows and flowing sculpted stone work.
▸ The ceilings of the house continue with organic forms that evoke the undulating
movement of the sea, including a striking swirl made with esparto.
▸ One of the best characteristic of the building would be the symbolism at the top of
the structure, which includes a tower crowned by a cross, studded with the tiled
monograms of Jesus, Mary and Joseph of the Holy Family in the Christian tradition.
▸ This turret rises from an undulating roof covered in iridescent tiles.
▸ It is said that the form of the turret is supposed to resemble the hilt of the sword of
St. George, the patron saint of Catalonia, whose blade is piercing the skin of the
dragon.
▸ In this way, the building indicates the deeply personal nature of the design,
reflecting both Gaudi’s regionalism and his mindfulness of Catholicism.
12. CASA BATLO
FACADE
The façade has three distinct sections which are harmoniously
integrated.
The lower ground floor with the main floor and two first floor
galleries are contained in a structure of Montjuic sandstone
12
galleries are contained in a structure of Montjuic sandstone
with undulating lines.
The central part which reaches the last floor, is a multicoloured
section with protruding balconies.
The top of the building is a crown, like a huge gable, which is
at the same level as the roof and helps to conceal the room
where there used to be water tanks.
13. CASA BATLO
EXTERIOR
▸ The two main motifs of the walls are:
▸ The facade resembles water, in which a stone was thrown, showing a
reference to the painting Monet "Pond with water lilies".
▸
13
▸
▸ Ceramic circles and multi-coloured glass shards change the colour of
the facade, when they are illuminated by the morning sun, shimmering
with all the colors of the rainbow.
▸ Gaudi personally watched the work and indicated where and what
colour to sculpt.
▸ On the facade there are no straight lines.
14. CASA BATLO
MATERIALS- FACADE
As a display of his versatility, Gaudi restored to the
use of materials in Casa Batlo as diverse as wood,
iron, ceramic work and glass, which provided the
building with a thought- provoking combination of
textures.
14
textures.
Gaudi was a progmatist - for the reconstruction of
Casa Batlo, he often used construction debris from
other objects of the city and thus saved materials.
Trencadis is a type of mosaic used predominantly by
Catalan Modernists. What sets this mosaic apart is
that the pieces are purposely broken, rather than
precise and complete.
This material Gaudi took as construction debris from
other construction sites or new tiles were broken and
then workers selected different pieces, collecting
them as a puzzle to create the effect of nature and
harmony.

Above the central part of the façade is an iron balcony. Two
iron arms near the balcony were installed to support a pulley
for getting furniture into the building.
The façade of the main floor is made in sandstone entirely. It is
supported by two columns.
The main floor contains joinery stained glass windows. Six fine
columns can be found in joinery windows.
The loft of the building is unusual, containing over 60 catenary
arches.
Gaudi liked the aesthetic of the broken masonry, although it
was broken an accident while transporting the materials.
Gaudi asked that the pieces be stuck with lime mortar to the
structure. It was held in place with a brass ring.

ROOF
The roof of Casa Batlo depicts the scales of a
dragon and progresses from orange to blue to
green, a magical illusion.
It is a splendid work of art with the 27 chimneys

It is a splendid work of art with the 27 chimneys
organised into four sets of six, each measuring
10 metres high and resembling mushrooms.
The main focal point of the roof terrace are the
four crooked and polychrome chimney stacks,
designed to prevent backdraughts.
19. CASA BATLO
THE LOFT
The loft is one of the most unique spaces, and is a delightful
combination of aesthetics and functionality.
It was formerly a service area for the tenants of the building
and housed laundry rooms, storage areas, etc.

and housed laundry rooms, storage areas, etc.
It is characterised by the simplicity of its shapes, its
mediterranean influence through the use of the colour white,
and its all- pervading light.
It contains a series of sixty catenary arches of catalon bricks
that creates a space which represents the ribcage of an
animal.
The staircase that connects this space with the terrace is a
robust iron spiral staircase.
Gaudi wrought iron took advantage not only as an aesthetic
and ornamental feature, but also as structural reinforcement.

One of the first times he used the parabolic arch
was in his design of the Palau Guell in
Barcelona.
The entrance gates are in the shape of parabolic

SPATIAL EXPERIENCE
The prototype of which Gaudi took from the
whale’s ribs, thus, the pressure is uniformly
distributed throughout the roof and visually
increases the space.

THE PATIO
The patio of lights is a fundamental part of the house, as I
distributes the air and light that enter through the main skylight.
Gaudi extended the patio (there was one and he included the
second) to ensure that natural light would reach all of the

second) to ensure that natural light would reach all of the
rooms of the house.
He also decorated it with tiles of different blue tones ( with
more intense colour in the upper part and lighter tiles at the
bottom) in order to ensure the uniform distribution of the light.
Following this same logic, the upper windows are smaller and
they become as we descend
(allowing more light to enter). The lower windows have
wooden slits which can be opened or closed for ventilation
control.
Gaudi installed the lift in the centre of the patio of lights. Its
beautiful original wooden lift car is still in use today.
22. CASA BATLO
CONSTRUCTION DETAILS
The whole yard is covered with ceramic embossed on, more
intense at the top and lighter at the bottom blues, achieving a
uniform distribution of light.
22
Ceramic tiles that is exposed to sunlight will not lose their
colour or began to fade.
MATERIALS
Ceramic tile is made from natural clay, sand and water.
These materials are molded to form square or rectangular
tiles and then baked in a kiln to remove moist of the moisture.
These tiles are arranged in an orderly and repetitive manner
throughout the walls of atrium.
They have a hard protective top layer that makes the tiles
impervious to water and moist stains, making them naturally
resistant to the ravages of high humidity conditions.
23. CASA BATLO
THE NOBLE FLOOR
The noble floor is larger than seven-hundred square meters, It
is the main floor of the building.
The noble floor is accessed through a private entrance hall
that utilizes skylights resembling tortoise shells and vaulted

that utilizes skylights resembling tortoise shells and vaulted
walls in curving shapes.
On the noble floor, there is a spacious landing with direct
views to the blue tiling of the building well.
The rounded shapes of the gaps and the lip-like edges carved
into the stone surrounding them create a semblance of a fully
open mouth, for which the Casa Batlo has been nicknamed as
the “house of yawns”.
With the aim of allowing the maximum possible light to pass
through the windows, he invented the continuous window in
the hall on the Noble floor, allowing it to be open outside
without any interuption.
To avoid possible excessive sunlight and to contribute the
warmth he put leaded glass on the top part of the window with
different shades of blue that help to soften the daylight.
24. CASA BATLO
CONSTRUCTION METHOD
The main floor, made entirely in sandstone, is supported by
two columns.
The design is complemented by joinery windows set with
multicolored stained glass.

In front of the large windows, as if they were pillars that
support the complex stone structure, there are six fine columns
that seem to simulate the bones of a limb, with a n apparent
central articulation.
Gaudi uses natural light to light up the house during the day
and the usage of stained glass windows delicately illuminate
this space.

The most noteworthy aspects of this space
are its paving and its tile and glass-coated

THE VESTIBULE
Once inside the Casa Batlló, the general vestibule, of
gentle shape and bluish tones, organises and directs
the traffic flow up to the different residences in the
building by means of different staircases, a private

This cave-like space, with rectangular ground plan
and curved ceilings includes the caretaker’s lodge, a
few storerooms and leads directly up to the private
hall of the flat on the main floor.
The neighbours’ or community staircase was used by
tenants and by the Batlló family’s servants

CABINET
Rising up the stairs you enter a
strange room with a fireplace and a
bench.

The cutout in the wall has the shape of a
mushroom and at first seems like a
sophisticated architectural solution.
As it turned out, this was
the cabinet where Josep Batlló worked.

If we see these windows,we will
really recognize an open mouth of
a sea monster or big fish.
31. CASA BATLO
VENTILATION
Gaudí designed an original ventilation system, including
different openings on the House’s windows.
These openings are manual and make it possible to regulate
the air with precision, without having to open the windows fully.

In turn, the design of the central patios, where the majority of
air enters, helps to maintain the heat in winter and ventilate in
summer.

RESTORATION
▸ The façade of Casa Batlo one of the most famous in the world, is experiencing a
historic moment, one that very seldom occurs. From February to May 2019,
professionals from 7 different fields will be working on the façade to clean it, restore
it and apply different conservation techniques. Ceramic, glass, wood, iron, stone…

▸ The façade of Casa Batlo is a festival of materials and creativity, making these
tasks both a demanding and exciting challenge for all the professionals involved. In
fact, the canvas that will cover it during this time is a tribute to all of them.
▸ In essence, the intervention seeks to recover the façade’s original shine, light and
colour, contributing to the preservation of the splendour and authenticity of this
World Heritage monument.
▸ This planning is subject to weather conditions, another of the key aspects of this
process, given that, at any time, the humidity and rain can affect the anticipated
setting and drying times and, as a result, the general planning of the intervention.

CONCLUSION
Many are trying in our time to build
amazing and bizarre buildings, while
forgetting about their practicality.
45
His view of the world around him,
the absence of templates, and most
importantly, rationalism, is the
difference from any other, albeit
talented architect, Antoni Gaudi.
