One of the most commonly asked Moodle question is, “What languages is Moodle compatible with?” Moodle has its own out-of-the-box features, with over 100 built-in language packs that can easily be enabled, but there are also a few Moodle plugins available that provide extended multi-lingual capabilities. Join us on April 21st, when we will go through both the built-in, and extended Multi-Language Options available within Moodle LMS.
Watch the webinar to learn:
- Which multi-language capabilities are built into Moodle
- Which languages are available in Moodle
- How to enable multi-language filters in Moodle
- A demonstration of the Moodle Plugins that are available to extend multi-language capabilities

Ben works closely with Moodle, is immersed in the Moodle community, and is heavily involved in the development, review, and updates of Moodle plugins.
A little bit about Lambda - our background is in Cloud Learning Management, and we are full service organization headquartered in Vancouver, BC.
We specialize in open source learning management systems like Moodle and Totara
Both Learning Management Systems are feature rich and most importantly – they are 80% more cost effective when you match leading competitors in the market today making them one of the fastest growing technologies in our space.
And as experts in eLearning and implementing the platform that we have found reduces IT operating costs by more than 40%. We have over 600 deployments under our belt that have allowed us to soak up industry best practices and pass them onto you. Like today’s webinar topic!
Your in good company with companies that use our technology like Google, Safeway and Four Seasons that use open source learning management systems like Totara
One company that we would like to highlight is Step Energy Services, an oil and gas field services company located in Western Canada.
STEP Energy uses Lambda’s hosting platform and services with the Totara Open Source Learning Management System
They have said that using Totara has given them an an incredible response from our professionals, exec team and management. Managers are loving the reporting and ability to check out their teams training records.
STEP is also developing more engaging online courses to have on the system via Micro Learning, quick little 2-3 minute online courses that relate to safety hazards.
Ask if everyone can use the chat box to let you know if they can hear you okay
There are a couple of poll questions throughout the webinar, as well as a survey once the webinar is over, if everyone doesn’t mind filling that out and participating
Send us your questions as they come, and we will save them for the Q&A portion of the webinar, near the end
Again, this webinar is being recorded, and will be sent to everyone, along with the presentation slides, after the webinar. So don’t worry about taking notes, just sit back, relax, and watch.
We’re going to try to make todays session as interactive as possible, so let’s start with a poll question, so that we can get to know each other.
Language packs are used to change the language in Moodle’s interface – so this includes any menu’s, buttons, settings, or labels you see in your Moodle site.
Language packs are used from a top-down perspective, not an individual one
For example, if a course is being taught in Mandarin, the course will have to be written in Mandarin by the Instructor and presented in Mandarin, regardless of what individual users prefer
Moodle has over 100 built-in language packs available for administrators to install.
The great thing about language packs is that you can install multiple language packs without slowing down your Moodle site. You can install over 20 different language packs, and the performance of your Moodle site wont be effected.
To uninstall multiple language packs, simply click on “Uninstall selected language packs”
There are two ways to install language packs:
The easiest way is to do it right from within Moodle
It’s also possible to do it manually
by downloading the zip file from the Language packs for Moodle
Unzipping it to a directory called “lang” in your moodledata directory
That wraps it up for Moodle’s out-of-the-box features, now let’s get into some of Moodle’s plugins.
There are 3 plugins available (all of which are available in Lambda’s Professional & Enterprise Packages) that allow you to incorporate multi-language features
They are the Multi-Language Content Version 2, Restrict by Language, and Atto MultiLanguage Content Version 2
This is a simplified filter that allows content that is authored using the text editor within resources to be displayed or hidden based on a user’s language preference settings
To install it manually, you can unzip the plugin in the Moodle filter directory.
To enable it, go to Site Administration > Plugins > Filters > Manage Filters, and enable the plugins from here
(Pass over to Ben, for demonstration of the Plugin)
This plugins allows Course Creators to restrict access to an activity or learning resources based on language setting in the user’s preference.
For example, only users who have English as their language preference will see courses resources and activities made available for English.
Likewise, only Spanish speaking users will see courses learning resources and activities that are in Spanish.
This plugin offers a user-friendly editing icon within the rich-text editor (Atto), providing the capability to select a body of text and tag it with the appropriate language.
Once content is tagged with a language, the Multi-Language filter will display the tagged content based on a user’s language preference setting. For example, only users who have Spanish as their language preference will see the content tagged with Spanish, and not the content tagged in English
This plugin makes the creation of multilingual contents in Moodle much easier
Facilitates the creation of multilanguage content
Poll 2: How many different distinct groups of users do you have using different languages? (1,2,3, or 4+)
