Problem
Dances are considered by many to be an essential component of the ideal high school experience, but studies show that only 60%
of students actually attend them. We decided to dig deep and discover why, and we found that many students don't attend dances
because they either don't know who's still available to be asked or they simply can't afford to pay for everything that attending a
dance entails. We want to increase the number of students attending school dances, facilitate the process of finding a date to ask,
and collaborate with local businesses to decrease the cost of dances (attire, dinner, transportation, etc.).
Solution
We created a website, beenasked.com, where students can see who has already been asked to a dance and who is still available to
be asked. With this information, based off our research, we anticipate that more students will attend dances because they will have
accurate information on who is available to be asked. A list of all students' names will be posted on the website; when students
have been asked, they will enter their name and their date's name in a survey posted on the website. The list will then be updated
on a daily basis to accurately reflect who has & hasn't been asked. In addition to helping students find dates, we will also be
promoting local businesses and stimulating their profits. Businesses we collaborate with can choose to pay a small fee to advertise
3. and offer a discount to students, or a slightly larger fee to advertise without offering a discount. These fees will be our source of
capital but will still benefit both the advertising businesses and our students.
Market
Our target consumer currently consists of the students at our high school, American Fork High, but we hope to eventually expand
to other high schools. That being said, any student at our school can be considered a target consumer as we're providing a service
applicable to all of them; that's more than 2,300 potential consumers! We currently don't have any competitors, but there was a girl
at another school in our district who had a similar idea. She obtained a list of all of the students in the school and was able to
provide information to students on who was still able to be asked to dances via text and word of mouth. What sets us apart from
her idea is that not only is our list more easily accessible to students (it's posted online), we also are collaborating with businesses
to help offset costs associated with dances: we're solving multiple problems
