Claude Levi Strauss has an effect on us as media students as he did some work on semiotics, he said “language is the semiotic system; it cannot but signify, and exists only through signification.” Semiotics is a major part of media. He also did a lot of work with narrative. After studying hundreds of myths and legends from around the world, Levi Strauss observed that we make sense of the world by seeing and using binary opposites everywhere. He observed that all narratives are organised around conflict between such binary opposites. A binary opposite is two terms or concepts that are theoretical opposites. So Claude Levi Strauss is important to the media world as he has many ideas on how many things in the media work.
