This creation shows one of the most sought product after
first needs products in our society.
But, many people do not think of the air pollution that this
implies (or even the work conditions ...) when they buy this
car.
This artefact shows a example of the market inefficiency

For me, this creation shows us the importance of the
consumer society in our life, but also the inequality which
result of this.
I think that as the shopping cart is fluorescent, we feel that it
is important, a precious thing. But there are a lot of shopping
carts all over the world. It's a mass product, used by the
homeless to store and transport what they own.
The artist wants to illuminate his artwork with the public
electricity (neons) to show the difficulties for the homeless
to feel fully at home in the USA… or anywhere.
Finally, this installation explains to us the dark side
(paradoxically with bright neon lights!) of the excessive
consumption.

This ultrarealistic sculpture shows an ordinary woman
eating in a diner. This artwork cruelly and ironically
illustrates the consumer society; she bought fast food and
her bag comes from a shopping mall. This denounces the
consumer society as well as the capitalist market economy.
The industries want to sell massive quantities of products
despite they are unhealthy. That’s why the woman is
overweighted. This sculpture is interesting because it
shows the inequalities in the U.S.A. too. This woman is
poor but she can buy cheap goods so that she feels like
she’s part of the consumer society. Shel feels integrated.

Ericsson Telephone ( model DBH1001)
1932
To me this creation of decorative arts shows us the
evolution of phones and its growing place in the consumer
society… as it has shrunk in size!
When the first phones were created only a few people were
able to own one, but over time and thanks to technological
progress, this device became essential.
Indeed many companies are competing with each other to
meet customers needs by proposing many options. In spite
of the high prices this market remains profitable.

In this artwork, we can see guns and their bullets next to a
dish full of meat lying on a table in the foreground and a
dog in the background.
According to me, this represents well the underground
market where firearms, bullets, and even a lot of different
kinds of animals are sold illegally.
Furthermore, the picture is quite dark, so, it makes me
think of the black market where items are sold by night.
Thus, the illicit market is hard to pin down because we
don’t know whether it’s just an illicit market or whether it’s
also an imperfectly competitive market (with supposedly
too much government regulation, barriers to entry…)

This work of art, perfectly shows the consumer society
in a market economy.
In a society where the most important thing is to earn
money, we see all the workers going back home, at the
same time causing traffic jams and polluting
enormously.
However, all this could be avoided with initiatives that
are making great strides with the VIDOC-19 crisis,
such as teleworking in particular.
In conclusion, this work shows a weak point of the
market economy.

For me, the plastic bags show the overconsumption of this
object.
Today, we find them all over the world, in the supermarket,
grocery stores, etc.
It’s easy to get it everywhere. According to me the plastic
bags are consumed in perfectly unreasonable amounts.
In addition, they are pollution factors that have created the
infamous so-called “Seventh Continent”
Finally, this artwork is an example of the excessive
consumption, as a negative consequence of our
individualistic behaviours in the markets, oblivious to the
destructions it causes ont he planet. We are like flies

This art piece is a pop artwork realised by Andy Warhol in
1982. According to me, it represents the Market because
Market can’t exist without money. It’s the starting point of all
the free market economy. We use money to feed us, to get
dress, to lodge us…
Furthermore, the different colors used can represent the
diversity of products, of choices, that markets offer.
Finally, the money is represented here through the dollar,
one of the strongest money in the world. The USA are
perceived as the first economic power of the world and
they are a fully market system, with its pros and cons, its
merits and limits.

This artwork perfectly illustrates the society we live in.
It is called the “supermarket lady” and it denouces the
consumer society.
We can see a overweight lady holding a shopping cart with
a lot of stuff in it… that she won’t even probably need.
Agrifood products are mass produced in the United States
(and elsewhere in the world) and disrupted the consumer
habits when malls came out. But both the infinite choice
and the ever lower prices have their dark side: obesity,
diabetes, animal suffering, deforestation...

This artwork is composed of a set of advertising. For me, it
denounces capitalism and the consumer society.
Indeed, advertising creates a need and encourages the
purchase of things that are often useless. The artist seems to
criticize this way of living, with the line that distorts the
advertising page.
For me, in this artwork the artist criticizes the market economy,
that induces us to get a distorted view of the reality, oblivious
to its limits.

This document is a cartoon made by Horsey in 2004. It denounces the
consumer society, the influence that the US has around the world and Donald
Trump’s government which is connected to the present-day.
First, the man represents the US ( it is written in his back) and he is eating all
the world as if this country has a strong influence over other countries either in
the South of America or other continents such as Europe. As an an example, it
can be all the restaurants like Roadside in France or McDonalds….
Also, this same description corresponds to the title “The Consumer Society”
because, just before the quarantine, pepole loads of products like 20 packs of
toilet paper, while the family with 2 or 3 couldn’t have basic stuff anymore. In
fact, in the US - and in all the developed countries as well - people
overconsume food. Another example can be the overconsumption of clothes,
phones, shoes etc.
And last but not least, Donald Trump thinks that the US is a self-sustaining
country so he wants to close the borders for the country to produce its own
products in order to give work to the American citizens and less import
products from other countries. This is even more true now that the number of
unemployed has more than tripled in the US since the start of the lockdown.

This piece of art perfectly shows the gap between wealth
and death in today’s society.
In fact, this picture illustrates a “natural” recycling center.
on the foreground, we can see some cans and wine bottles
while on the background, televisions were thrown.
According to me, this artwork really dissociates two
different worlds: people getting rid of cans and people
getting rid of TVs. This can be compared to the market and
non-market economy; where the Televisions were thrown
away from Market Economy people because they’ve got a
new one (“higher productivity”) while cans were thrown
from Non-Market Economy’s people because they shared
a good time with each other (“Sharing is a good way to feel
good”).

Title: The Marilyn diptych
Artist: Andy Warhol
Period: 1962
Location: Tates Modern, London
This artwork by Andy Warhol denounces the consumer
society through the very famous actress Marilyn Monroe.
Andy Warhol has represented the Marilyn portrait many
times with different colors.
He wanted to denounce mass production of many
products and even of artists. Indeed, this serigraphy shows
that the artists and their image are industrialized and they
become symbols of the consumer society.
Serigraphy were at the time just a way of making money in
USA but Warhol succeeded in transforming this in a piece
of art, which brought a second meaning to his creations:
the art becoming a market economy in itself!.
As you can see with the link, “The marilyn diptych” is for
sale on Amazon, the symbol of our current consumer
society.

Dossier EDD : Le Pop Art américain attaque
la société de consommation
Title: woman with child in a
stroller
Artist: Duane Hanson
Period: 1985
This sculpture made by Duane Hanson shows us the
caricature of the American housewife who, like many
people, is part of the consumer society.
We can see shopping bags in the photo, which she
probably buys regularly, and her purchases are probably
not necessary, which reminds us "the American Lady".
Moreover, we can observe the lady is overweight which
means she eats unhealthy food so she enriches the big
industries.
Indeed, this sculpture shows that we live in a society of
unconscious consumption and not just in USA.

At first view we only see a group of 15 motorcyclists AKA “bikers” driving
on the roads of Tibet between the cows and the tibet mountains.
But this picture, taken by Wei Zhang doesn’t represent only this, since it
demonstrates also for me the overconsumption of the humans.
Here we have 15 motorcycles that consume oil and emit CO2 into the
air. So this oil overconsumption generates an air pollution because of
this growing number of motorcycles taht emit lot of CO2. Hence this all
generate greenhouse gases emissions!
Why don’t these people buy any bikes ? It will cheaper, sportier and at
the same time eco-friendly !
This artwork makes us think about the overconsumption of the humans
reagrding to differents goods that are not really necessary for our
primary needs, especially speaking of our means of transport. Why do
humans choose the easier way that doesn’t respect the environment ?
Why are humans so hypocrite and pretend to reduce the greenhouse
gases emissions while keeping on using this kind of commodities,.
That’s the questions I ask myself looking at this kind of picture : /
the name of this picture is “ballad from tibet”,this
exhibition was takes by Wei Zhang on 2017 and
this one is intended for a film.
