3. What is Dependent Personality
Disorder?
 Dependent Personality Disorder is characterized
by a long-standing need for the person to
be taken care of and a fear of being
abandoned or separated from their
partner, parent, or other important person in their
life.

4. Symptoms of DpD
Emotionally dependent, needy, and clingy
Deep- fear of separation or abandonment
Unable to make even small decisions without the advice of others
Avoidance of personal responsibility
Unable to take criticism
lack of self-confidence
Conflict avoidance
Willingness to put up with cruelty from others
childlike behaviors
Desire to place the needs of others above their own
Difficulty being alone

5. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
 The movie is based upon a group of men living in a
psychiatric ward, dealing with different types of
disorders.
 The main character that I was observing throughout my
research was Billy Bibbit

6. Billy Bibbit
 Billy is a very timid Stand offish type of guy who
suffers with stuttering when he is nervous or
confronted with conflict Billy isn’t a committed to
stay at the psychiatric center he’s a voluntary patient
meaning he can leave whenever he wishes. Just as a
patient with DPD he’s afraid to move forward fearing
the real world and the responsibility of making
decisions This is showed on the following clip
• In this clip Billy is confronted with the choice of
leaving with McMurphy This decision could ultimately
change his life and allow him to be an independent man
but he refuses because like most people with DPD he
has issues separating himself from dependent situations

7. DPD Treatment
 Group psychotherapy
-Group psychotherapy is where a group of patients meet in
a room with one or more therapist and they discuss their problems,
is form of therapy is intended to help people improve their ability
to cope with difficulties and problems in their lives and their ability
to interact with individuals in a group setting.
 This gives patients the opportunity to learn about their
peers and for them to gain knowledge about what to do if
they have a problem
 In the movie this was one of the main form of therapy
used.
 Billy has a hard time opening up in therapy which showed
his problem of conflict avoidance.

8. Save Billy
 Billy possibly overcame a milestone when he decided to
have an affair with Candy this was a big accomplishment
for Billy because he finally made a decision for himself
but because of his fear of rejection he commits suicide
 In my opinion everyone has at least one characteristic of
Dependent personality disorder. Would you notice it if
you weren’t told?
