3. The UL mark ensures a product is safe and brings peace of mind and
confidence to you, the consumer.
This certification is especially important to business owners, who are legally
responsible to protect all employees from harm in the workplace.

4. The UL mark is assigned by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a nationally-
recognized and independently accredited safety organization that establishes
globally respected standards and regulations to safeguard both people and
products.
UL scrutinizes products through validation, testing, inspecting, and auditing,
and also advises and trains companies on how to build safer products.

6. UL created different UL marks to indicate different types of certification for
various electronic products. For example:
UL Listing Mark for Canada and the US
Most common. “If a product carries this Mark, it means UL found
that representative product samples met UL's safety requirements.
There are three variations of UL's Listing Mark: one used only in the
United States, one used only in Canada and one for both the United
States and Canada.”*
UL Energy Listed Mark
Appears on “air conditioners and furnaces, refrigerators and
freezers, dishwashers, washers and dryers, water heaters, cooking
equipment, and similar products evaluated to U.S. and Canadian
energy efficiency standards.”*
UL Functional Safety Mark
Normally restricted to products intended to be used in a
functional safety application and involves the “evaluation of a
safety critical circuit(s) relating to software, hardware,
environmental stress factors (such as EMC) and safety lifecycle
management processes.”*

7. The notion that there are several different UL marks is extremely important
for consumers to know, as some products only have components that are UL
certified, not the entire end product. Those products, for example, are only
allowed to bear a special Recognized Component Mark:

9. The UL mark is not a label you can simply purchase and apply to any product—
it is only granted one compliance is achieved.
Products are typically submitted by the manufacturers and the company name
provided to UL must appear on the product if UL compliance is achieved and
applicable UL mark applied.

10. The process begins by filling out a Request For Information form.
For more information, see UL’s “Product submittal process FAQ” on their official website:

11. Before product testing begins, manufacturers must agree to participate in UL’s
Follow-Up Services program.
This ensures that a product not only complies when initially evaluated, but
maintains compliance on an ongoing basis. This involves evaluating samples
and even visiting the site where the products are manufactured.
