Bono was awarded the Humanitarian Laureate Award by the Simon Wiesenthal Center for his efforts to help the underprivileged and disenfranchised. In his acceptance speech, Bono urged the audience to use American democracy to help failing African countries, stating that 2.5 million Africans will die needlessly from preventable diseases like AIDS each year due to lack of access to available drugs and treatments. Bono dismissed the idea that America is isolated from problems in Africa, and said that the crisis there presents an opportunity for the US to help in the wars against terror and poverty.
