Title of the Activity: Reading short stories with accuracy, appropriate rate proper
expressions and composing clear and coherent sentences using appropriate grammatical
structures: Prepositions and prepositional phrase
PART 1. Introduction
Reading is the complex cognitive process of decoding symbols to derive meaning. It
is a form of language processing. When a child is reading “on grade level” it means that he
has mastered the skills that he needs to read and understand words and sentences in books at
the expected level of difficulty.
Language processing refers to the way humans use words to communicate ideas and
feelings, and how such communications are processed and understood.
A preposition is a word that relates a noun or pronoun to another word in a sentence.
The word preposition means placed before and, indeed, prepositions are placed before nouns
or pronouns. The prepositions serve to show the relation between the noun or pronoun and
some other word / words in the sentence.
Here are some commonly used prepositions.
Examples:
1. There were birds above the trees.
2. The city was without power for several hours.
3. After the movie, were going to Lucy’s house.
4. The people are concerned about the pollution.
5. I hurried up the stairs and into my room.
about behind during near through
above before except next to
across below for of toward
against beside from off under
along by in on up
among beyond inside out with
at down into over without
The underlined words are examples of prepositions.
A prepositional phrase is made up of the preposition, the object of the preposition,
and all the words in between.
The preposition used with a noun is called a prepositional phrase.
Examples:
1. during the night
2. over the moon
3. beyond the horizon
4. across the highway
5. around the park
6. Off the top
7. According to the weather forecast
8. After many tries
9. Out the door
10. Near the ocean
If the prepositional phrase modifies a noun or pronoun, it functions as an adjective.
Examples:
1. The plane carried a Filipino sailor with appendicitis.
2. I want the doll on the shelf.
3. The girl in the red shirt is my little sister.
4. The woman on the boat is my aunt Carol.
5. Please wash the dishes in the sink.
If the prepositional phrase modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb, it
functions as an adverb.
Examples:
1. During the show the baby slept.
2. The plane flew over the field.
3. Before class, I got my books.
4. Put your homework in the basket.
5. The children ran on the playground.
 The other commonly used prepositions of place are on, in, over, above and under.
 We use on to refer to streets, avenues, etc.
 We use in to refer to land areas.
 We use over to indicate a path or motion
 We use above to refer to the higher level or higher in vertical line.
 We use under to refer to a lower level. Something is above in it.

Language processing refers to the way humans use words to communicate ideas and feelings, and how such communications are processed and understood. A preposition is a word that relates a noun or pronoun to another word in a sentence. The word preposition means placed before and, indeed, prepositions are placed before nouns or pronouns. The prepositions serve to show the relation between the noun or pronoun and some other word / words in the sentence. Here are some commonly used prepositions. Examples: 1. There were birds above the trees. 2. The city was without power for several hours. 3. After the movie, were going to Lucy’s house. 4. The people are concerned about the pollution. 5.
