Emergent mathematics

Week 1
Today’s Aims: To understand
Mathematical Concepts.
Objectives:
 Identify and clarify assignment language
 Identify how maths is important in the everyday
lives of children in the early years
 Discuss ways learners have supported children’s
mathematical development at placement in past
week
 Produce an A4 Factsheet demonstrating how
mathematics can be part of a child’s everyday life.
Unit 10
The aim of this unit is to provide learners with knowledge and
understanding of children’s emergent mathematical skills.
Unit 10 Learning Outcome (LO)
 Understand mathematical concepts.
 Understand current frameworks in relation to emergent
mathematics.
 Understand the role of the early years practitioner in relation to
supporting children’s emergent mathematical development.
 Understand how to promote children’s emergent mathematical
development.
 Understand partnership working.
 Understand inclusive practice in relation to emergent mathematics.
Clarify assignment language.
In groups read the Extended Assessment and write down what is
meant by the following words:
Group A Group B Group C
Discuss Summarise Evaluate
Explain Analyse Compare
Show evidence Critically evaluate Justify thoughtful
ideas
One group at a time will present their thoughts to the
Maths is important in the everyday
lives of children in the early years
In small groups list:
Math’s activities and opportunities for learning maths in your placement.
 Think about how mathematics is ‘all around us’
 Maths is important in the everyday lives of children in the early years.
• Play
• Interactions
• Physical and natural world
Discuss ways you have supported children’s
mathematical development this week
Share your thoughts and ideas on how you
have embedded maths into your everyday care
and support of the children in your setting.
Produce an A4 Factsheet demonstrating how
mathematics can be part of a child’s everyday life.
 Individually produce an A4 Factsheet which is aimed at parents of children
under the age of 5 years that will contain useful information on how to help
and support emergent maths in their child/children.
 Explain how maths is evident in children’s everyday lives and give specific
examples.
 Please complete as homework to be put in your folders by next week
Next week:
 Discuss ways the practitioner can support
children’s mathematical development
