PLASTIC
WASTE
RECYCLING
SOLUTION
Project Background
• Our day to day lives generate lots of platsics both domestic and inductrial.
• There is need to find a solution for this plastic waste that is environmentally friendly.
• The solution should ensure that we protect environment and reduce on the Country’s
carbon footprint.
• These plastics can be recycled if channeled to the right places
• Their scope covers:
• Waste Collection and Management
• Heavy Fuel Oil Production
• Environmental Campaigns

PLASTIC
WASTE
RECYCLING
SOLUTION
There are more plastic materials in the world than before, causing a heavy pollution to
environment.
Presently the available avenues of remedying the pollution is landfill, burning and
recycling.
Landfill and burning cause the secondary pollution and the scope of plastic recycling is
very limited.
HESCO is interested in the following Plastics for recycling;
i. Polyethylene- Both HDPE and LDPE
ii. Polypropylene
iii. Polystyrene
iv. Waste Tyres

PLASTIC
WASTE
RECYCLING
SOLUTION
• Hesco did a trial run in a controlled pilot plant to
determine the best way to regenerate the
plastics.
• When they were subjected through a pyrolysis
reactor and the resultant chemical tested for
combustion characteristics.
• The products were Fuel Oil, Non Condensable
Gases, Carbon Black and Aluminum.
• The Non Condensable Gases were flared to avoid
hydrocarbon emission into the environment, and
the Fuel Oil was taken for testing.

PLASTIC
WASTE
RECYCLING
SOLUTION
.
• The process involves converting waste plastics into Heavy Fuel Oil that can be used in
Boilers and Furnaces through a process called Pyrolysis.
• Pyrolysis is a controlled burning or heating of a material in the absence of oxygen.
• In plastics pyrolysis, the macromolecular structures of polymers are broken down into
smaller molecules or oligomers and sometimes monomeric units.
• Further degradation of these subsequent molecules depends on a number of different
conditions including (but not limited to) temperature, residence time, and the
presence of catalysts and other process conditions.
• The pyrolysis reaction can be carried out with or without the presence of catalyst.
• Accordingly, the reaction will be thermal and catalytic pyrolysis.
• The final product of the pyrolysis process will be Heavy Fuel Oil which can be used in
Industrial Boilers.

PLASTIC
WASTE
RECYCLING
SOLUTION
The main product of the Waste Plastic pyrolysis process, is Heavy Fuel Oil that can be used in
Boilers and Furnaces.
These are the properties of the HFO:
i. Affordability
ii. Low Viscosity. The product is expected to have kinematic viscosity of < 10 Pas at 400C.
This means that there will be no need to preheat the HFO before using it
iii. Low Sulphur Content in the range of 0.02%. This means that your facility will emit less
SOx to the environment
iv. Green Product. This means that by using Safi HFO your facility has avoided the use of
Fossil Fuels as well as participated in cleaning the environment

PLASTIC
WASTE
RECYCLING
SOLUTION
Companies can benefit through extended producer responsibility and this
pyrolysis process though a plastic waste take-back scheme is a very good
scheme to consider.
