& Resources
for Staff
The Dixie Grammar School
Michael Parker Library
The Michael Parker Library has a
developing range of resources and services
to support teaching and learning, and also
to extend the curriculum. This booklet
outlines of some of the main resources and
services the Library has to offer.
1) Staffing
Professional Librarian: Anne Robinson
SLA School Librarian of the Year 2005.
These are some of the things that I do:
 manage the resources, services and facilities
in the libraries at the Junior and Senior
Schools.
 plan and deliver Information Literacy lessons,
inductions for students and staff, INSET,
reading development, ICT skills development
and extra-curricular activities in collaboration
with staff.
 work full-time—8.15-5.15.
Email: library@dixie.org.uk
Telephone ext: 225
2) Resources
Print Resources:
 Fiction: including Quick Reads, Graphic
Novels, Large Print Fiction, general fiction
and the Young Adult section.
 Non-fiction: for curricular and leisure
interests. Please suggest new titles.
 Newspapers and magazines: small collection
for the curriculum at the moment . Happy to
discuss the purchase of more in the future.
Popular magazines and comics are purchased
for students to read at lunchtimes and after
school.
 Displays, booklists and reviewing magazines:
changed and updated regularly.
 Helpsheets: covering a range of topics
including Internet searching, creating
bibliographies, evaluating sources.
Library Services & Resources for Staff
Digital and Online Resources:
 Ebooks: we are trialling some ebook platforms at the moment.
 DVDs: please suggest new titles.
 Presentations: covering a range of topics including Internet searching, creating
bibliographies and citing sources.
 Research Guides: I will collect and organise a range of evaluated websites to
support any curriculum subject. These are then made into a Research Guide on
our LibGuides platform with videos, books, downloadable materials and so on.
Our Research Guides on LibGuides: http://library-online.libguides.com/index.php
Subscription Databases:
We now have a series of superb online subscription databases available, through our
subscription to LSE (see below), for use by staff and students:
 Credo Reference
 Essential Articles
 Guardian and Observer Digital Archive
 History Study Center
 Philip Allan Archives
 Science Reference Center
These are suitable for a range of subjects. More may be added during the year—
please ask me for access details and training. If you would like the Library to
subscribe to any other online resources, please ask.
If you are a member of the public library, then you will be able to access an
extensive range of online resources. There is a link to these from our website,
Library Online—see URL below.
Library Online Services:
The Library has an extensive range of websites designed to support and extend our
services—Library Online Services. This virtual library is available any time anywhere
with library information, reading guides, rolling news feeds, downloadable resources
and much more! Please ask me for a demonstration of how these services can
support your work.
Our main website, Library Online: http://library-online.org.uk
Resource Collections from LSE (see also last two pages):
We subscribe to LSE, our local Schools Library Service. This enables me to borrow
collections of books on your behalf to support your lessons . These resources may
be used in the Library or your classroom. All staff have personal membership and
can borrow a range of resources, including artefact collections and DVDs.
3) Library Facilities
There is flexible space for class or small group use, plus soft seating and ICT
facilities (see below). The Library may be booked by staff for classes or small
groups. Please see me well in advance for any booking (during school time or for
extra-curricular use) so that we can plan activities together, I can make sure that
resources are available and I can also organise my time effectively.
ICT Facilities
 6 laptops for student and staff use: part of the school network.
 1 laptop for use as an OPAC (the Library’s catalogue of resources).
 Colour laser printer.
 Headphones and mice for use with the laptops.
 Floor sockets for use with electrical equipment.
 Drop-down screen and projector.
 Kobo ereader and Ipod Touch.
4) Reading
Encouraging our students to read:
A main focus of my work is to guide and support students in developing and widening
their reading. The following activities are offered:
 Reading Development Programme: I work with the English Department using a
programme for students in Years 6 to 8 to encourage reading for pleasure.
 Individual guidance is offered throughout the day to students to help them with
selecting reading materials from a wide range of genres.
 I also utilise technology to encourage reading. Through Library Online,
students are supported with the use of wikis, blogs and a range of other web-
The Dixie Grammar School, Michael Parker Library 2013
based services. We are also looking at purchasing ebooks and ereaders for the
Library in the future!
 Extra-Curricular Activities: reading is a constant theme throughout the year with
author visits, reading groups, World Book Day, quizzes and competitions taking
place.
Our Reading is Fun wiki: http://library-online.pbworks.com
5) Information Literacy Skills
Developing skills for the future:
 Research and Study Skills: Do your students need to improve these skills? I
offer support with teaching research and study skills such as planning research,
locating and evaluating information, citing sources, avoiding plagiarism and
creating bibliographies. I am happy to plan a lesson or set of lessons with you to
be delivered in the Library using our resources and facilities, or help you to
create materials to be used in the classroom. All teaching resources that I
create are downloadable from the Library Online website.
 Library Inductions take place in the Autumn Term. These can be tailored for
Year 6 classes, students new to the school, and Sixth Form students.
6) Management Information
Useful statistical information:
 The Eclipse Library Management System and my records enable me to produce
useful reports on the use of the Library, including use by subject departments
and borrowing figures by gender, form and year. Please ask, if you would like this
information for a department, form, class or individual student.
7) Extra-Curricular Activities
Wide range of activities:
 Throughout the year, I organise and support an exciting range of events in the
Library such as author visits, World Book Day, Carnegie Shadowing, Inter-Form
Book Quiz, Reading Groups and competitions.
I hope this quick tour of our Library resources and services has been
useful to you!
