Matthew 20:1 NET "For the kingdom of
heaven is like a landowner who went out
early in the morning to hire workers for his
vineyard. 2 And after agreeing with the
workers for the standard wage, he sent them
into his vineyard. 3 When it was about nine
o'clock in the morning, he went out again
and saw others standing around in the
           marketplace without work.
4 He said to them, 'You go into the vineyard
too, and I will give you whatever is right.' 5
So they went. When he went out again
about noon and three o'clock that afternoon,
he did the same thing. 6 And about five
o'clock that afternoon he went out and found
others standing around, and said to them,
'Why are you standing here all day without
                     work?'
7 They said to him, 'Because no one hired
us.' He said to them, 'You go and work in the
vineyard too.' 8 When it was evening the
owner of the vineyard said to his
manager, 'Call the workers and give the pay
starting with the last hired until the first.' 9
When those hired about five o'clock
came, each received a full day's pay. 10 And
when those hired first came, they thought
they would receive more. But each one also
        received the standard wage.
11 When they received it, they began to
     complain against the landowner, 12
saying, 'These last fellows worked one
hour, and you have made them equal to us
who bore the hardship and burning heat of
the day.' 13 And the landowner replied to
one of them, 'Friend, I am not treating you
unfairly. Didn't you agree with me to work for
              the standard wage?
14 Take what is yours and go. I want to give
to this last man the same as I gave to you.
15 Am I not permitted to do what I want with
what belongs to me? Or are you envious
because I am generous?' 16 So the last will
be first, and the first last."
Matthew 20:1 NET "For the kingdom of
heaven is like a landowner who went out
early in the morning to hire workers for his
                  vineyard.
Don‟t miss the theme of the passage.
Sometimes we get so tied up in interpreting
the pieces of the story, we forget what Jesus
               is talking about.
Jesus is talking about what “the kingdom of
                heaven is like.”
I believe Jesus is continuing teaching about
the Kingdom of Heaven He started in
                 chapter 19.
This parable is added to illustrate what was
said just before, in the last chapter. (PNT)
Matthew 19:16 NET Now someone came up
to him and said, "Teacher, what good thing
must I do to gain eternal life?"
17 He said to him, "Why do you ask me
about what is good? There is only one who
is good. But if you want to enter into life,
   keep the commandments." 18 “Which
ones?" he asked. Jesus replied, "Do not
murder, do not commit adultery, do not
steal, do not give false testimony, 19
honor your father and mother, (Exo 20:12-
16; Deu 5:16-20) and love your neighbor as
             yourself." (Lev 19:18)
20 The young man said to him, "I have
wholeheartedly obeyed all these laws. What
do I still lack?" 21 Jesus said to him, "If you
wish to be perfect, go sell your possessions
and give the money to the poor, and you will
have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow
me." 22 But when the young man heard this
he went away sorrowful, for he was very
                      rich.
23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "I tell
you the truth, it will be hard for a rich person
to enter the kingdom of heaven! 24 Again I
say, it is easier for a camel to go through the
eye of a needle than for a rich person to
enter into the kingdom of God." 25 The
disciples were greatly astonished when they
heard this and said, "Then who can be
                     saved?"
26 Jesus looked at them and replied, "This is
impossible for mere humans, but for God all
things are possible." 27 Then Peter said to
him, "Look, we have left everything to follow
you! What then will there be for us?" 28
Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth: In
the age when all things are renewed, when
the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne,
you who have followed me will also sit on
twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of
                    Israel.
29 And whoever has left houses or brothers
or sisters or father or mother or children or
fields for my sake will receive a hundred
times as much and will inherit eternal life. 30
But many who are first will be last, and the
                     last first.
Jesus is using another wrap like we saw last
            week in Matthew six.
He begins and ends (wraps) a parable with a
                  proverb.
Matthew 19:30 NET But many who are first
will be last, and the last first. 20:1 "For the
kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who
went out early in the morning to hire workers
                for his vineyard.
Then after the parable He says again,
Matthew 20:16 NET So the last will be first,
            and the first last."
The parable gives the application of the
                  proverb.
The proverb here is “So the last will be
         first, and the first last.”
Jesus is weaving a common earthly story
          into a heavenly truth.
Then He says, 1 "For the kingdom of heaven
is like a landowner who went out early in the
morning to hire workers for his vineyard. 2
And after agreeing with the workers for the
standard wage, he sent them into his
vineyard. 3 When it was about nine o'clock
in the morning, he went out again and saw
others standing around in the marketplace
                 without work.
4 He said to them, 'You go into the vineyard
too, and I will give you whatever is right.' 5
So they went. When he went out again
about noon and three o'clock that
afternoon, he did the same thing. 6 And
about five o'clock that afternoon he went out
and found others standing around, and said
to them, 'Why are you standing here all day
without work?' 7 They said to him, 'Because
no one hired us.' He said to them, 'You go
and work in the vineyard too.'
It appears it must have been harvest time.
Harvest time is usually the only time of the
year a landowner needs extra help in
addition to the workers he currently employs.
He goes out in the morning and hires day
laborers for the standard wage The
standard wage was a denarius a day.
                 (NET notes)
He goes back several times and hires
                laborers.
Matthew 20:8 NET When it was evening the
owner of the vineyard said to his manager,
„Call the workers and give the pay starting
with the last hired until the first.‟ 9 When
those hired about five o'clock came, each
received a full day's pay. 10 And when those
hired first came, they thought they would
receive more. But each one also received
                the standard wage.
Following OT law the foreman paid the
workers at the end of each day.
                (Lev 19:13)
Jesus then interjects the story with the
proverb. He has the foreman pay the last
                  one first.
Maybe unorthodox, but not shocking. The
shocking thing (to some of the workers) was
the foreman pays everyone a full day's pay.
Matthew 20:11 NET When they received it,
they began to complain against the
landowner, 12 saying, 'These last fellows
worked one hour, and you have made them
equal to us who bore the hardship and
          burning heat of the day.'
13 And the landowner replied to one of
them, 'Friend, I am not treating you unfairly.
Didn't you agree with me to work for the
standard wage? 14 Take what is yours and
go. I want to give to this last man the same
as I gave to you. 15 Am I not permitted to do
what I want with what belongs to me? Or are
you envious because I am generous?' 16 So
the last will be first, and the first last."
The problem is not injustice by the
landowner, but jealousy by the workers.
Their normal, very human reaction was,
             “That‟s not fair!”
The land owner tells them, “I paid you
         exactly what we agreed.”
We have the tendency don‟t we—to wonder
what the person beside us is making.
We agreed to work for what we are being
paid and we certainly hope that everyone
else agreed to the same pay or less. We
don‟t want a co-worker making more than us
for doing the same job. In this case the folks
that had been there all day, we‟re upset that
the folks that did less work got paid the
                     same.
We tend to slip down a slippery slope where
we think what we want is what we deserve.
“Selfishness sees what it wants to see and
             leads to jealousy.”
God has blessed that family more than mine.
So and so had a better job.
That guy never seems to have any
   problems. Everything always works for
                   him…
Have you seen the TV show, “What would
you do?” They put actors into everyday
situations with hidden cameras to see what
         the people around will do.
Once they sent an actor into a grocery store.
The actor asks to cut in line. When he gets
up to the check out, lights and music start
playing and a clerk runs out with a huge
$500 check saying, “You are our one
            millionth customer!”
The fun part was watching the person who
                let them cut in line.
Many of them were furious—That guy just
              took MY prize money.
One guy threw his stuff down on the counter
                      and left.
A woman ran to the service desk to raise,
                 well, not heaven.
It‟s difficult for us at times to see other‟s
blessings without the “Why not me” Attitude.
Don‟t miss the spiritual meaning
Jesus said it was about the Kingdom of
                   heaven.
Vineyard = Kingdom of Christ,
             The Church
Landowner = God
Foreman = Christ
Laborers = Us
Work = Work of The Lord,
        Every Good Work
Wage, Pay = Eternal Life
Workday = Believer‟s Life
Evening = Eternity
Every person that accepts Jesus Christ as
their savior receives the gift of eternal life
prepared by the father administered by son.
                Notice the lesson
God Establishes the terms of salvation
God comes looking for all who will come
God gives generously
God is so merciful He looks for workers until
the final hour.
Let us not miss a very important aspect of
this parable. Why were the workers sent into
the vineyard? To WORK! They were not
brought into the vineyard to sit under a vine
           & nibble on grapes. NO!
They were there for a specific purpose. To
           labor for the Landowner.
1 Corinthians 15:58 NET So then, dear
brothers and sisters, be firm. Do not be
moved! Always be outstanding in the work of
the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in
                vain in the Lord.
2 Timothy 3:16 NET Every scripture is
inspired by God and useful for teaching, for
reproof, for correction, and for training in
righteousness, 17 that the person dedicated
to God may be capable and equipped for
                every good work.
James 2:18 NET But someone will say, "You
have faith and I have works." Show me your
faith without works and I will show you faith
by my works. 19 You believe that God is
one; well and good. Even the demons
believe that — and tremble with fear. 20 But
would you like evidence, you empty
fellow, that faith without works is useless?
Do not misunderstand, salvation is nothing
to be earned, it is given freely to all who will
accept it. When we accept His salvation, we
accept the work He has laid out for us.
Matthew 24:44 NET Therefore you also must
be ready, because the Son of Man will come
at an hour when you do not expect him.
45 “Who then is the faithful and wise slave,
whom the master has put in charge of his
household, to give the other slaves their
food at the proper time? 46 Blessed is that
slave whom the master finds at work when
he comes. 47 I tell you the truth, the master
will put him in charge of all his possessions.
You might be feeling like you are at the
bottom of the pile. Down and out, beaten,
lost, & forgotten. When you accept Christ,
He will turn you upside down.
He said himself, “[In my Kingdom], …So the
last will be first, and the first last." Matthew
                    20:16 NET

What Jesus said about God’s Mercy

  • 1. Adapted from the series, “Jesus Said” by Michael Wiley http://www.sermoncentral.com/sermons/what-jesus- said-about-gods-mercy-michael-wiley-sermon-on- jesus-teachings-131494.asp
  • 2. Matthew 20:1 NET "For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. 2 And after agreeing with the workers for the standard wage, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 When it was about nine o'clock in the morning, he went out again and saw others standing around in the marketplace without work.
  • 3. 4 He said to them, 'You go into the vineyard too, and I will give you whatever is right.' 5 So they went. When he went out again about noon and three o'clock that afternoon, he did the same thing. 6 And about five o'clock that afternoon he went out and found others standing around, and said to them, 'Why are you standing here all day without work?'
  • 4. 7 They said to him, 'Because no one hired us.' He said to them, 'You go and work in the vineyard too.' 8 When it was evening the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, 'Call the workers and give the pay starting with the last hired until the first.' 9 When those hired about five o'clock came, each received a full day's pay. 10 And when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more. But each one also received the standard wage.
  • 5. 11 When they received it, they began to complain against the landowner, 12 saying, 'These last fellows worked one hour, and you have made them equal to us who bore the hardship and burning heat of the day.' 13 And the landowner replied to one of them, 'Friend, I am not treating you unfairly. Didn't you agree with me to work for the standard wage?
  • 6. 14 Take what is yours and go. I want to give to this last man the same as I gave to you. 15 Am I not permitted to do what I want with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?' 16 So the last will be first, and the first last."
  • 7. Matthew 20:1 NET "For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. Don‟t miss the theme of the passage. Sometimes we get so tied up in interpreting the pieces of the story, we forget what Jesus is talking about.
  • 8. Jesus is talking about what “the kingdom of heaven is like.” I believe Jesus is continuing teaching about the Kingdom of Heaven He started in chapter 19. This parable is added to illustrate what was said just before, in the last chapter. (PNT) Matthew 19:16 NET Now someone came up to him and said, "Teacher, what good thing must I do to gain eternal life?"
  • 9. 17 He said to him, "Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments." 18 “Which ones?" he asked. Jesus replied, "Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, 19 honor your father and mother, (Exo 20:12- 16; Deu 5:16-20) and love your neighbor as yourself." (Lev 19:18)
  • 10. 20 The young man said to him, "I have wholeheartedly obeyed all these laws. What do I still lack?" 21 Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be perfect, go sell your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." 22 But when the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he was very rich.
  • 11. 23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "I tell you the truth, it will be hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven! 24 Again I say, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter into the kingdom of God." 25 The disciples were greatly astonished when they heard this and said, "Then who can be saved?"
  • 12. 26 Jesus looked at them and replied, "This is impossible for mere humans, but for God all things are possible." 27 Then Peter said to him, "Look, we have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?" 28 Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth: In the age when all things are renewed, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
  • 13. 29 And whoever has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. 30 But many who are first will be last, and the last first. Jesus is using another wrap like we saw last week in Matthew six. He begins and ends (wraps) a parable with a proverb.
  • 14. Matthew 19:30 NET But many who are first will be last, and the last first. 20:1 "For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. Then after the parable He says again, Matthew 20:16 NET So the last will be first, and the first last."
  • 15. The parable gives the application of the proverb. The proverb here is “So the last will be first, and the first last.” Jesus is weaving a common earthly story into a heavenly truth.
  • 16. Then He says, 1 "For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. 2 And after agreeing with the workers for the standard wage, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 When it was about nine o'clock in the morning, he went out again and saw others standing around in the marketplace without work.
  • 17. 4 He said to them, 'You go into the vineyard too, and I will give you whatever is right.' 5 So they went. When he went out again about noon and three o'clock that afternoon, he did the same thing. 6 And about five o'clock that afternoon he went out and found others standing around, and said to them, 'Why are you standing here all day without work?' 7 They said to him, 'Because no one hired us.' He said to them, 'You go and work in the vineyard too.'
  • 18. It appears it must have been harvest time. Harvest time is usually the only time of the year a landowner needs extra help in addition to the workers he currently employs. He goes out in the morning and hires day laborers for the standard wage The standard wage was a denarius a day. (NET notes) He goes back several times and hires laborers.
  • 19. Matthew 20:8 NET When it was evening the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, „Call the workers and give the pay starting with the last hired until the first.‟ 9 When those hired about five o'clock came, each received a full day's pay. 10 And when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more. But each one also received the standard wage.
  • 20. Following OT law the foreman paid the workers at the end of each day. (Lev 19:13) Jesus then interjects the story with the proverb. He has the foreman pay the last one first. Maybe unorthodox, but not shocking. The shocking thing (to some of the workers) was the foreman pays everyone a full day's pay.
  • 21. Matthew 20:11 NET When they received it, they began to complain against the landowner, 12 saying, 'These last fellows worked one hour, and you have made them equal to us who bore the hardship and burning heat of the day.'
  • 22. 13 And the landowner replied to one of them, 'Friend, I am not treating you unfairly. Didn't you agree with me to work for the standard wage? 14 Take what is yours and go. I want to give to this last man the same as I gave to you. 15 Am I not permitted to do what I want with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?' 16 So the last will be first, and the first last."
  • 23. The problem is not injustice by the landowner, but jealousy by the workers. Their normal, very human reaction was, “That‟s not fair!” The land owner tells them, “I paid you exactly what we agreed.” We have the tendency don‟t we—to wonder what the person beside us is making.
  • 24. We agreed to work for what we are being paid and we certainly hope that everyone else agreed to the same pay or less. We don‟t want a co-worker making more than us for doing the same job. In this case the folks that had been there all day, we‟re upset that the folks that did less work got paid the same.
  • 25. We tend to slip down a slippery slope where we think what we want is what we deserve. “Selfishness sees what it wants to see and leads to jealousy.” God has blessed that family more than mine. So and so had a better job. That guy never seems to have any problems. Everything always works for him…
  • 26. Have you seen the TV show, “What would you do?” They put actors into everyday situations with hidden cameras to see what the people around will do. Once they sent an actor into a grocery store. The actor asks to cut in line. When he gets up to the check out, lights and music start playing and a clerk runs out with a huge $500 check saying, “You are our one millionth customer!”
  • 27. The fun part was watching the person who let them cut in line. Many of them were furious—That guy just took MY prize money. One guy threw his stuff down on the counter and left. A woman ran to the service desk to raise, well, not heaven. It‟s difficult for us at times to see other‟s blessings without the “Why not me” Attitude.
  • 28. Don‟t miss the spiritual meaning Jesus said it was about the Kingdom of heaven. Vineyard = Kingdom of Christ, The Church Landowner = God Foreman = Christ Laborers = Us Work = Work of The Lord, Every Good Work Wage, Pay = Eternal Life Workday = Believer‟s Life Evening = Eternity
  • 29. Every person that accepts Jesus Christ as their savior receives the gift of eternal life prepared by the father administered by son. Notice the lesson God Establishes the terms of salvation God comes looking for all who will come God gives generously God is so merciful He looks for workers until the final hour.
  • 30. Let us not miss a very important aspect of this parable. Why were the workers sent into the vineyard? To WORK! They were not brought into the vineyard to sit under a vine & nibble on grapes. NO! They were there for a specific purpose. To labor for the Landowner.
  • 31. 1 Corinthians 15:58 NET So then, dear brothers and sisters, be firm. Do not be moved! Always be outstanding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. 2 Timothy 3:16 NET Every scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the person dedicated to God may be capable and equipped for every good work.
  • 32. James 2:18 NET But someone will say, "You have faith and I have works." Show me your faith without works and I will show you faith by my works. 19 You believe that God is one; well and good. Even the demons believe that — and tremble with fear. 20 But would you like evidence, you empty fellow, that faith without works is useless?
  • 33. Do not misunderstand, salvation is nothing to be earned, it is given freely to all who will accept it. When we accept His salvation, we accept the work He has laid out for us. Matthew 24:44 NET Therefore you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.
  • 34. 45 “Who then is the faithful and wise slave, whom the master has put in charge of his household, to give the other slaves their food at the proper time? 46 Blessed is that slave whom the master finds at work when he comes. 47 I tell you the truth, the master will put him in charge of all his possessions.
  • 35. You might be feeling like you are at the bottom of the pile. Down and out, beaten, lost, & forgotten. When you accept Christ, He will turn you upside down. He said himself, “[In my Kingdom], …So the last will be first, and the first last." Matthew 20:16 NET
