WHY I do what I do today:
I came to Canada in October 1980 at the young age of 3. After the war ended in Vietnam my
parents knew with 100% certainty that was no chance of a decent life for their family under the rule
of the new communist regime. With that thought dominating their existence they made one of the
most risky, although in my perspective, the most courageous decisions of their life. We fled the
country through the only means we knew...by boat. So my family and I became known to the rest
of the world as ‘Boat People’. We were part of the group of people that risked everything and fled
Vietnam by boat to seek a new life. There was no certainty of success in that journey, but a 50%
chance of a better life was enough to risk our lives. My family and I are very grateful to this great
nation as we were refugees after the Vietnam War.
Growing up in an immigrant family made us anything but typical Canadians. Not knowing the
language or the culture, my parents did the best they could to raise their family in a new country.
This meant working many undesirable jobs, stumbling forward and staying confused. Although my
parents made every effort they could to show us that we were loved, they had a very difficult time
showing each other. You could say my dad was an abusive alcoholic, but only towards my mom. As
a young child right through to my adult years I can remember my dad coming home drunk on
numerous weekends and physically abusing my mom. It always terrified me to hear my parents
fight. I always feared that my dad was going to kill my mom. I’ll never forget the one time he almost
did. I remember so badly wanting my mom to leave my dad and take us away from him on many
occasions. Each time she told me she really wanted to, but couldn’t because she wouldn’t be able
to raise 3 kids on her own. She didn’t know how and didn’t have any support to raise us a single
parent. She didn’t have the confidence to find a job that would pay her enough to care for us. I
know she sacrificed to give us a better life thinking we needed to have both parents in the picture.
It didn’t matter to me, I just wanted the fighting and fear to end. I kept thinking if we had enough
money then we wouldn’t have to stay with my dad anymore. No child should have to witness their
mother being repeatedly abused by their father. I did not hate my father, but I despised what he
did to my mother.
I thought things would get better as I got older, but it didn’t. Junior high school was the worst. As I
was still living through the fear and violent home life with my parents, I was also bullied at school.
Teenagers can be so cruel sometimes. I would consider us a poor family growing up. I didn’t like it
when my parents told us we couldn’t afford things. Things that most kids had and I didn’t, like nice
clothes or cool gadgets. For that I was teased and bullied. I’m glad it only lasted 3 years. Once again
I wished we had more money.
After high school I just wanted to travel and see the world. I felt it was a great way to learn about
life, other cultures and see some cool things. Deep down I knew it was a sure way to get away from
my home life of chaos that I was so tired of living. I found the best way to work and travel at the
same time. I went to work on cruise ships. One contract of 6 months turned out to be 9 years of
amazing travel experiences, making money and meeting great people. Best of all, I did not have to
deal with my parents chaotic relationship. And I made my own money. As I worked on ships all
those years the thought of being poor no longer dawned on me. I never wanted to be poor again.
As I ended my cruise ship career in 2007 and settled back in to life on land, I was introduced to the
company I work with today, World Financial Group, in 2008. At the heart of what we do it’s so
much more than the money that can be made in a very high paying industry, the flexibility of my
schedule or having control of my income. Building a business within WFG has allowed me to grow
into a person that has learned to listen and connect with people to find out what their true needs
are. We know it’s not always about the money, but when there isn’t enough of it, that becomes a
constant concern. I want to help people have the confidence and support they need to free
themselves from any unhealthy relationship, whether it be with a spouse or even with a job.
Whether they’re immigrants, women or hard-working, good hearted Canadians that feel trapped in
their existence, everyone deserves a chance at peace, love and the opportunity to learn and grow
in whichever way they desire. I am truly grateful for the chance to serve people every day in helping
families financially. What’s more exciting is the gift I have to share with people who want to make a
difference for their own family and change their legacy forever...our business opportunity. I now
truly understand why I have chosen this career path.
Have you ever stopped to think about how you came to choose your career path?
Do you know why or what drives you to do the things you do?
How have you come to shape the beliefs you have today around relationships, finances and life
itself?
Thank you for connecting with me.
