The UCSF School of Nursing Dean’s Advisory Council was established in 1987, originally as the Board of Overseers, in an effort to assist the School in its mission of teaching, research, public service, and patient care. Dean’s Advisory Council members are thought leaders, corporate executives, policy makers, philanthropists, and innovators who are united in their commitment to the School and the future of its excellence.

Examples include: –Opening your rolodex for contacts at corporations that the Dean can meet with during his upcoming travels to Australia and around the nation. –Leveraging your connections and hosting events where the Dean can help broaden the awareness of UCSF School of Nursing –Growing membership in the Council to diverse volunteers by providing 1-2 referrals for follow-up

- A lumni Communications that are focused on by our School of Nursing UDAR team include: Our monthly eNews distributed to 8,500 Alumni who we have their email addresses for UCSF Magazine , mailed and distributed widely each Fall and Spring to all UCSF alumni, and well as a smaller group of friend and that includes a two-page “Alumni Hub” spread about our UCSF School of Nursing successes to note Our monthly Science of Caring mailing that is distributed to all students, faculty and staff as well as presented frequently as part of our press and public relations packages. Annually this is printed in the fall with the best articles of the year. Social Media includes Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn with the most frequent success markers found on LinkedIn with over 500 Alumni members. The FY13 Honor Roll is being remodeled to more closely follow the framework of the UCSF Foundation’s annual summary of philanthropy – feature private giving totals, roster of Dean’s Associates and 3-4 profiles in giving. A complete honor roll of donors will be available online.
- When you last met in October, Megan spoke with you about the broadening and deepening of the reach when it came to events. Although the events continue to grow and be successful we need to engage the current students in Alumni activities so they are able to easily access the opportunities that are available to them in the future and understand how they can provide meaningful experiences for them post graduation. Pipeline Focus: Our Alumni efforts aim to broaden and deepen the pipeline of support from alumni and friends. We have focused this year on increasing and deepening our targeted outreach to: New students + Recent graduates + Doctoral alumni + Specific Class Reunions. We continue to employ strategies to cultivate engagement from segments of our donor pipeline. New students – welcome phone calls. We had a UCSF party for graduating students at Alumni Weekend called the Zero Year Reunion. Reunion for last year’s class at Alumni Weekend, as well as special programming for our DNs/PhDs. Recent successful events: We continue to use new event formats to cultivate engagement from prospective supporters. Recently we had an event in the East Bay for all Alumni to hear the Dean speak about not only the School of Nursing but UCSF in full. It was fun, easy and accessible for all Alumni to get and stay connected to the opportunities we offer. Our Helen Martin Faculty Practice Award & Reception on May 8 was successful with over 100 attendees, 20 student nominations and 2 award winners. - Thursday evening’s Zero Year Reunion Following the Last Lecture, students joined the Alumni Association for the first ever Zero Year Reunion for all current UCSF students. Folks networked with alumni and other students while listening to music, enjoying food & beverages and entering a chance to win tickets to some notable San Francisco museums, restaurants and events! - 1953 Reunion Tea These Nurses graduated from UCSF’s School of Nursing the year Dwight D. Eisenhower began his presidency. They have stayed in close touch over the years and during Alumni Weekend took a limo up to the Palace Hotel to celebrate over 60 years of friendships. We arranged an afternoon tea for them to relax when they arrived before all of the big festivities began for Alumni Weekend.
- NURSING DNS & PHD ALUMNI WELCOME RECEPTION All guests networked with current and past faculty, DNS, Moore Fellows and PhD students as well as learned about current trends in the field while enjoying complimentary hors d' oeuvres, beer, and wine. All School of Nursing DNS, PhD Alumni, Moore Fellows, Current Doctoral Students, Faculty and Friends were welcomed to attend both the reception and the lecture to follow!
- Celebration of Success: UCSF Nursing Meets the Challenges of 21 st Century Health Care Nursing Accredited Continuing Education Presentation In celebration of the reunion for nursing doctoral alumni, distinguished graduates Marilyn Chow BS ’70, MS ’72, PhD ’82, Vice President of Patient Care Services, Kaiser Permanente; Catherine Gilliss PhD ’83, Dean, Duke University School of Nursing; and Susan Janson PhD ’83, UCSF Professor of Nursing will lead a discussion on current issues facing the profession for all nursing alumni and students to enjoy. Shirley Chater MS ’60, PhD, former U.S. Commissioner of the Social Security Administration and former National Advisory Committee Chair of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Nurse Executive Fellows program will be moderating.

- GLOBAL HEALTH AND NURSING PRACTICE: ART & SCIENCE OF COMPASSION Nursing Accredited Continuing Education Presentation Sally Rankin , presented on behalf of Kim Baltzell PhD ’05, MS ’10, Associate Professor, UCSF School of Nursing, and Jaime Sepulveda, MD, MPH, DrSc, Executive Director, UCSF Global Health Sciences, was interviewed by School of Nursing Dean David Vlahov, RN, PhD, FAAN, on opportunities for nurse leaders and scientists to fulfill the strategic needs in public global health.
- Nursing Alumni Luncheon & State of the School Over a three-course gourmet luncheon, alumni heard the state of the school with Dean Vlahov, heard from UCSF Chancellor, honored Catherine Gilliss PhD ’83, the 2013 recipient of the Jane Norbeck Distinguished Alumni Award, and recognized the student recipients of the UCSF Nursing Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship.
