- I’m Lorenzo,\nI’m one of the founder of Fablab torino,\nthe brand new digital fabbrication lab, based in Turin and powered by Arduino.\nThe lab cohoperate really closely with Arduino, offering the possibility of prototyping project both on electronical side and both on the phisical side.\nIN the lab I was in charge of organising workshops on how to use the machine, programming workshop, and arduino workshop.\nAnd of course I was developing project together with the team\n\n
- Ok, but what is arduino?\nArduino is an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. It's intended for artists, designers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments.\n
- but let’s go a bit deeper,\nso arduino is both an hardware, (the phisical board that you use for the project)\nthe software( an open source program that is used to write the code for the board)\nand a comunity(the most powerfull thing about arduino is defenetly the fact that people all over the world ise arduino and release tutorials, on how to do basically everything)\nWhen you have an idea to develop, the first thing to do is to google for similar project, it will save such a lot of time...\n
- Before I said a board, but actually there are more then one board. there’ an entire family of boards suitable for different kind of project.\nArduino due is the new board just released obout one month ago, \nthe uno,\nleonardo\nand arduino mini new aswell made because much more people wanted to integrate directly the arduino in their project, where often there are size problem.\n\n
- All the boards are open source,\nreleased under creative commons share alike Licence.\nthe software is released under gpl licence\nand all the documentation is released under creative common aswell\n\n
- Because the hardware is open source a lot other boards, can be produced and sold.\nSome of them has some special feature added, and others doesn’t \n

- So this is a basic Bard,\nthis is the core of the board the processor (in this version an atmega 328)\nyou can see the power supply connector, and the usb port.\nThis little holes all around the board are where you actually connect your external devices.\nanalog and digital input and analog and digital output to connect sensors and actuators\n\n
- this is how does it look a basic Arduino project\n
- and this is how often you find tutorial on how connecting wires from arduino to sensors\n
- when you have wired all your project is time to start writing the code, a big effort has been made in making the arduino programming language as easy as possible.\neveryone think that programming is something difficult and misteryous, but I can ensure that I saw people that after few hours were able to modify code, and write their own.\n\n
- To extend the potentiality of the arduino exist something called shiled, \nwhat you see in the picture can look like a bunch of arduino one on top of each other, but instead the arduino is just on the bottom, on top of it there are tho shield, \n\n
- those are three example of shields produced by arduino,\n
- but the list of compatible arduino shiled on the market is endless, and give you the possibility to to more or less all that you need\n
- when you don’t find the shield you need, you can always make your own.\nthis for example is a shield we made to use the arduino as a parking assistant.\n\nsometimes is good to prototype your product and then produce everything, circuit included, but sometimes is enough just to produce just a shield, \n
- Becase one of the aim of arduino is to make electronic prototyping as easy as possible arduino team developed also an other way of sketching a project,\nWith the thinkerkit you don’t need to warry about soldering and cable anymore, all that you need is that orange shield and the sensors and actuators you need \n
- here you can see a banch of different kind of sensors that are part the kit.\nThere are buttons, potentiometer, light sensor, sound sensors, buzzers, touch, screen.\n\n
- This kit was boarn to enable designer to rapit prototype circuits, using the kit you can just plug all the component you need for the project and it will work without any need of a breadboard and difficult wiring.\n

- Arduino in a way is so easy that even child can use it.\nthis is sylvia, an 11 years old girl from california that teach how to use arduino for kids\n
- of course you can learn from sylvia, that is really great, but because of the large arduino comunity , you can find a lot of other resource online.\nthi is the arduino playground, here you can practally find tutorial on how to connect your arduino to basically anything\n
- Instructables is an other very large website where people do project and explain to the world how to reproduce them, just to let you understand that this makers movement is becaming a very bic business, we have to say that recently instructables has been bought by Autodesk\n
- Sparkfun is an other industry that understood the importance of this kind of market aswell and produces and sell components and devices ready to use or easy to connect to arduino.\n\n
- When an earthquake is about to strike in Chile, who do you think is first to sound the alarm? You might be surprised that it’s not the government, but rather a 14 year old boy.\nAfter living through an earthquake in 2010 and seeing the devastation this spring in Japan, Chilean teenager [Sebastian Alegria] decided that he wanted to construct something similar to Japan’s earthquake warning system. He purchased an off the shelf earthquake detector for less than $100, and connected it to his computer via an Arduino.\n\n

- As you can see, you can build more or less what ever you want.\nGoing back to the world of 3d printing, the economyst looked at this as the third industrial revolution, but if you look better, inide most of the 3d printers there an arduino, behind them, ther’s a comunity that work together, sharing knowledge.\n\n
- So I agree with Chris Anderson, editor of Make, that think that there’s an other revolution going on, the one made by the makers movement.\nIs the revolution that is being made by people that works in garages and that now has the tools to develop and produce what do they need.\nSo I hope that your projects and ideas will become part of this new industrial revolution\n\n
