The document discusses examples of existing podcasts including Joe Rogan Experience, Startalk, and Misfits. It analyzes common features like discussing controversial topics to gain publicity and including different perspectives. The research will be used to make an accessible podcast that speaks on popular topics using mostly diegetic sounds and covering conspiracies of interest to teenagers through social media platforms.

In a usual Joe Rogan podcast on YouTube they are stationed with cameras and microphones to pick
up reactions and their voices in as high quality as possible this makes sure the viewers are getting
the highest quality podcast videos, these videos have also been converted to mp3 files and put on
Spotify to make the podcast more accessible which opened up Joe Rogan's audience and market a
lot more.
They use little sound effects and music to make the podcast as interesting as possible focusing on
the discussions Joe, the presenter is having with his guest however on my podcast I may
implement more sound effects and a little bit of intro music as it will be purely audio so I will have
to make it as interesting as possible to keep listeners hooked.
In this particular episode of the podcast Joe and his guest are discussing Bob Lazar a supposed area
51 worker and his claims to what lies behind the walls of the facility, they tend to speak quite
formally in this series as it is a serious subject which has a lot of controversy surrounding it
meaning formality is key to keeping the subject looking professional as possible.
This content appeals to the audience of JRE because it includes a type of conspiracy backed up with
hard evidence and a great guest who is very formal in the ways he describes Bob Lazar and his
experiences all those decades ago, this type of podcast draws the reader into watching it by having
a large following already who vouch for the podcaster their selves and the situation they are
discussing meaning all the publicity will already be interested. The JRE show itself draws most of its
viewers and listeners in by speaking about a variety of different things to keep the audience on
their toes and excited for the next insight, some of the topic discussed are things such as: current
world topics like the pandemic or conspiracies and even UFC and other types of sport as Joe’s ex
profession was a UFC commentator giving him a broad span of topics to speak on.

I have chosen an episode of Startalk podcast as on this channel a lot of conspiracy theories
are spoken about both present day and past conspiracies bringing a large audience to their
channel.
The audio used in these podcasts consists mainly of mp3 standard audio of conversations
between the three of the podcasters giving the listener a clear input into what they are
speaking about. The podcast contains diegetic sounds only to promote a sense of
seriousness to the viewers and listeners as Startalks’ podcasts are more formal than some
others on YouTube, we see this from the way they speak and present their selves. The only
non-diegetic sounds used in the podcasts are usually at the start during the intro and right
at the end supporting the outro which is common on most YouTube channels.
The actual content of the voice over is very formal because its between very respected men
one of which including Neil DeGrasse Tyson a highly respected astrophysicist who will need
to keep his reputation held high meaning he can’t just span off around any controversy or
conspiracy as the backlash from the media may impact him.
This appeals to it’s audience as it has three very respectable scientists speaking on the
pandemic and the virus itself giving not only scientific views on it but also having a simpler
look into it and giving some way out conspiracy theories to appeal to what some of the
audience may want. The regular viewers will have a standard of the podcast they want to
see which is: formality, science and reasoning which this video includes meaning it will be
drawing most of its regular listeners in.

Lastly for my research example I have chosen one of the podcasts from the channel: Misfits. Misfits are
a lot less formal than some of my other research examples as they appeal to a wider audience of the
younger generation compared to a set audience. In this particular episode there are no non-diegetic
sounds but there is their outro which includes a VHS overlay and some music which is more relaxing and
informal than some other podcasting series.
The topic which they are speaking on is Jeffery Epstein which when the video was released was a very
controversial area to speak on with the recently released series intriguing more and more people to
learn about him, in the Misfits podcast on this they are all quite relaxed and seem to be having a laugh
and just less serious than some of my other examples giving the Misfits a more chilled out and relaxed
format. The language they use and the way they speak to each other is very informal and they use a lot
of colloquial language showing they are not as serious in some videos compared to others and the topic
they are speaking on is also spoke about without much regard for formality meaning the viewers and
listeners of Misfits may prefer to just have a laugh and joke and listen to some way out theories on
current world topics.
The Misfits podcast fits their audience appeal in a couple of ways one of which being its runtime, the
podcasts runtime is only around two minutes giving a short clip of insight into the topic they are
speaking on for people who could just be interested but don’t want to listen to a full podcast on the
situation as normal podcasts tend to run for over an hour in most cases. Another way they appeal to
their audience is by keeping their target audience and demographic open making sure it includes all
who want to watch, they do this by using informal language meaning you don’t have to be a rocket
scientist to fit in and understand what they are talking about, another way they do this is by including a
lot of social media making their podcast very accessible giving people of all ages and people from all
around the world convenient ways to access them making their overall audience bigger.

5. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products have?
• One common feature my researched products have is they all cover conspiracies
which are heavily wanted meaning they all gain publicity from YouTube and Spotify
too if they are registered and if they are monetised this can bring a profit from the
content too.
• Another common feature I’ve found from my research is my chosen products all
give a few perspectives of the topics they are speaking on bringing the video more
viewers who will want to see their perspective be spoke on.
• What aspects of the research will you include within your on work?
• I will aim to make my product as accessible as possible so I can connect with a
large amount of viewers and get a larger gathering around my podcast. One other
aspect of my research I will include in my final product is speaking about largely
popular topics giving my product as much publicity as possible to gather a fanbase.
Lastly I will aim to include mostly diegetic sounds as it is more popular to have less
sound effects and a higher demand for high quality voice over. The only non-
diegetic sounds I will aim to include in my podcast will be an intro and an outro
which will include a short segment of music.
