2. EXISTING PRODUCTS
The first existing product that I chose to research was a harry potter themed video on a harry potter
folklore YouTube channel. The whole channel is based on theories and character breakdowns all in the
harry potter universe. For this specific channel, the presenter narrates over an array of different clips and
images which are all related to the subject of the video. This is a good technique as it allows the
audience to see a visual representation of what the narrator is saying. This specific content creator uses
no shots of him talking to the camera. This may be because he feels if he adds shots of himself talking
this may pull the audience out of the harry potter world which they have invested themselves in whilst
watching the video or, he my feel he doesn't need that personal connection with the audience as they
haven't clicked the video not to see him, they clearly just want to learn about the topic of Harry Potter.
The creator of the channel also uses a variety of images and videos in the product, this adds layering
and a sense of difference to the product giving it a level of complexity. Whilst these are being displayed,
the narrator is constantly narrating, this is a very good feature to include as ensures that the audience
are constantly gathering information and also secures the idea of them being hooked on the product.
3. EXISTING PRODUCTS
For my second existing product I decided to look at a video on the Global Cycling Network YouTube
channel. The video I watched was a video dedicated to the hill climb racing side of cycling. This video
includes a range of different shots and techniques, used to really add different layers to the product. The
video opens with the use of shots of the cyclists and location. This product is opened like this to give an
overall insight of what the video is about and also to try to engage the audience by showing them what
they love. Then, the video includes of shots of the presenter talking and properly opening the product.
The product keeps switching between the shots of the event and the man whilst maintaining his dialogue
over everything that is displayed. This is a very good technique to use as it is constantly giving the
audience information whilst also allowing them to see what the presenter is describing. The use of the
shots of the presenter are also useful as it gives what he is saying purpose and allows the audience to
really connect and engage with what they are watching. In the opening stages of the product, the
presenter uses a rhetorical question. This is a very clever piece of dialogue as this allows the audience to
instantly connect with the presenter as it seems like he is trying to communicate with his audience. I feel
like this was used to suck the audience in right at the very start. Adding to this, the presenter is very
enthusiastic and appears to be very passionate about the sport. This will increase viewers as they want to
watch someone they trust and who knows what they are talking about. Another very good marketing
technique from the channel. The product also includes a few different interviews with the different riders,
this is a good technique to include as it gives the audience who are interested in the product an insight
into how the riders think. This could be good as it could inspire the audience to involved in the subject of
4. EXISTING PRODUCTS
For this existing product, I have decided to choose a video from the YouTube channel Film Riot, this
video is about how to film scenes including dialogue. I decided on this video as the idea of films link to
the idea that I am planning to do for my project.
This product contains a mix of shots of the presenter talking and then switches to a number of
examples of the way dialogue has been filmed in different successful films. However, the video opens
with the presenter on screen. This is to create a clear welcome to the video and also allows the
audience to almost create a relationship with the presenter as he is the first thing that they see. The
shots of different films are displayed on screen when the presenter begins to talk about things
featuring in those specific scenes. This is useful as it allows the audience to get a piece of imagery to
support dialogue therefore getting a more clear understanding and therefore taking more knowledge
from the product. The presenter will carry on talking over the scenes of films until the dialogue is
needed to be used as an example for his point.
I feel this product will have been made to attract film lovers as well as try and encourage the idea of
filmmaking. The way they have branded the product as a whole is a very clever way to convey the
products purpose. Firstly, the channel name is ”Film Riot”. This instantly creates the idea of film in the
audiences head then, to add to this, the channel name is constantly displayed the background when
the shot of the presenter is on screen. This means that is always on show for the audience to see
5. EXISTING PRODUCTS
For my fourth existing product I decided to look at a marvel comic documentary, the video is titled The
Marvel Universe: A History. The video opens with a short compilation of all the different Marvel comic
book characters, this is displayed with quiet cinematic stereotypical superhero music over the top. This
is a good start to the product as it allows the audience to get invested into the world before the
presenter has even started to speak. It also gives an insight to any new comic audiences what the
marvel world is all about therefore, it is used as a sort of summary. As well as that, it may take any
already committed fans down memory lane therefore making them want to watch the video even more;
this makes this start a very good marketing technique. After this section, the product moves onto the
presenter speaking over different comic book images, the images displayed on screen match the
presenters dialogue. I found this to be a frequent theme throughout the existing products which I have
researched so this is clearly an effective technique to use in my product. The music included in a
product is very important. In this specific product, it opens with very stereotypical superhero music. This
will have been to really attract not only its already committed audience but also a new audience. This is
because the music will be so recognizable that it will remind the committed fans of what they love
therefore attracting them to the product. Adding to that, because the music is so recognizable, even
the new audience will recognize it thus even attracting them to the video. After the intro, the product
has a change in music it changes to a much calmer tone. This will have been done so that the audience
6. EXISTING PRODUCT
For my next existing product, I have chosen a documentary about the rise of the superhero world.
The product opens with an actor from a superhero film presenting an introduction to the product.
This will have been done to attract the superhero audience initially to the product as they will all
know exactly who she is. The introduction is also supported by very intense stereotypical superhero
music again significantly attracting the target audience of superhero fans to the product. Both
features are very clever marketing techniques from the creators of this documentary. The product
then switches to a different narrator talking over different comic book images. This is basically how
the majority lf the product goes from now on. However, this specific video does include a number of
different interviews with an array of different people, this includes many from the comic book world.
This was clearly purposefully done as when big names like Stan Lee are included in a superhero
based video, this is clearly going to attract the products target audience.
The narrator of the product has a very deep and powerful voice. This is very clever from the creators
of the documentary as it creates a sense of superhero imagery for the audience. This concept would
secure that the the audience maintain they're interest in the product and is a very intelligent feature
to include.
7. EXISTING PRODUCT ANALYSIS
After researching a number of different products. I have managed to pick up many different
features and techniques in each different product which may help me whilst in production for my
web series episode. First of all, the idea of a presenter narrating over some images which change
to fit his dialogue was used in every product in researched. This is clear evidence that this
techniques works perfectly and that I should incorporate in my product. This is because it just
works so effectively as it allows the audience to gather the same information visually and aurally
meaning that the information will be absorbed more efficiently. Some of the products also include
shots of the presenter talking to the camera. This techniques does work as it creates a very
personal feel as it seems like the narrator is talking personally to the audience. This also helps
maintain the audiences concentration as it is a change from starring at still images for 10 minutes
straight.
A few of the different products included interviews. I think that interviews are a great feature to
include. This is because it allows the audience to get an insight into a subject that they love from a
professionals perspective. Interviews are also good as it allows a new audience to come and learn
about the subject of the product, from this they may have found a new loved passion. Every
researched product included music that fitted the theme of their chosen subject and the music was
used for different purposes. I want to include this idea in my product as just music alone can
