1. PERSONAL STATEMENT
I want to enter the dietetics profession because I myself had a
history where my personal nutrition was a huge issue in my life. The
subject of food/nutrition and how it played a role in the human body’s
ability to function and live has fascinated me for quite a while. Over the
course of time, I learned more and more about it and physical activity
and how I could apply it to my own life so that I could lose weight and
become more physically fit and healthy. I chose this profession so I
could learn all I can about the field and help others accomplish the
same things I taught myself how to do when I was younger and
hopefully expedite the process for them.
During my undergraduate studies, I have taken classes that have
taught me in-depth information and detail about what it is exactly that I
have been practicing for so long. I have been physically active with
contact sports like wrestling and mixed martial arts for several years,
which inevitably pairs with nutrition. Having a young exposure to this
had prepared me to think from a potential future client about how I will
be preparing them to be active and eat according to my
recommendations. I have also worked in several restaurants over the
course of high school and college, which have kept me around food and
has helped me keep my knowledge about food and health active. It has
also helped my improve my interpersonal, time management, critical
thinking and performing under stress skills. It has also helped me
understand food preparation and how this can alter food composition
and caloric content compared to “healthier” methods of cooking and
food prep.
Some of my short-term goals involve personal fitness goals and
certain certifications which will aid me in my pursuit for a successful
professional career. In regards to fitness, I have specific weight lifting
2. goals, muscle size and fat percentage goals. These are very important
to me as they keep me striving for improvement and so that I can
practice what I preach. I’ve earned a personal training certification from
the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) as well as my First
Aid/AED/CPR certification from the American Red Cross and I plan to
pursue more certifications that will make me more a qualified
applicant. I plan to graduate in 2017 with my Bachelor’s in Specialized
Sciences in Nutrition and Entrepreneurship as well as applying for
related internships.
Some of my strengths include years of personal experience with the
subject as well as a large network of people in the area of fitness. I am
very passionate about what I study, I consider myself proficient with my
people skills and I have a great desire to help others accomplish their
goals. A few areas of improvement I have are my lack of nutrition-
related formal experience and my habit of cutting sleep to work. I also
need a lot more volunteer time and extracurricular activities, preferably
related to nutrition and fitness so that I can be the most well-rounded
nutrition and health major I can possibly be.
Junior year, I joined OU’s Nutrition Club to get myself immersed
in my major and associate myself with my peers which also helps with
networking and building fruitful relationships. Experiences socializing
with group members and discussing nutrition-related topics during
meetings has encouraged me to pursue my health-related goals even
more. I also received an internship offer from a physical training facility
in Houston, TX which will give me very much experience in my
preferred field. Currently, I am in contact with several different
organizations so that I can hopefully gain volunteer and possibly even
work experience, such as an eating disorder rehabilitation center.
3. What makes me distinctive is my personal experiences and my
willingness to do anything it takes to reach my goals. I’m someone with
a clear vision and who is willing to learn all that is necessary and do
whatever needs to be done to make my vision a reality. As a
professional I strive to surround myself with individuals who share my
interests, goals and are mature in their respective field to encourage
my own growth.
