Bring Holiday Cheer To
Seniors
Once again this year, ACCESS
will be collecting wrapped
shoeboxes filled with fun items
for seniors in need during the
holidays as part of the Senior
Shoebox Program.
To donate or volunteer call 541-
494-1201 or visit accesshelps.org.
NOTE FROM THE DIREC TOR
This year has been a year of impact for ACCESS. With the completion of our ACCESS film
comes an opportunity to resonate with our community. Seeing our team members portray our
neighbors’ stories gives me so much pride. It showcases the importance of coming together to
tell a story of how we provide food, warmth, and shelter here in Jackson County.
We invite you to create an impact this holiday season by supporting your neighbors. This year
marks the 19th year of the Greystone Court Food Drive in December. Our Senior Shoebox
Program allows our community to share the holiday spirit with seniors in need. For some, this
may be the only gift they receive. There are plenty of opportunities for our community to come
together and participate in food drives, cooking skills, or become part of the ACCESS team.
However you participate, we thank you for your generous support.

Telling the story of real clients is crucial to create a resonating impact
on our community. ACCESS worked with Heartisan Films to create a
film that captures the true stories of six clients and direct a heartfelt
film showcasing the services neighbors receive at ACCESS. This moving
film was debuted on October 4th at the Mayors United event with much
praise and will be distributed through social media, ACCESS’ website
and other channels. The stories told in this film are portrayed by
ACCESS team members who volunteered to be part of the film. To see
the film visit accesshelps.org.

JJ Bartley is an Army Veteran
who came to the VA in White
City for treatment in 2018. While
at the VA he was referred to
ACCESS’ Supportive Services
for Veteran Families (SSVF)
Program. Mr. Bartley was
eligible for SSVF assistance and
was anxious to get housed so he
could reunite with his son.
It took several months of hard
work before he was approved
for rental housing through the
SSVF program. Now JJ has settled
into his apartment, is receiving
service-connected disability
from the VA and will be able to
sustain housing long-term. Mr.
Bartley is currently volunteering
his services to help his fellow
veterans in need by providing
free haircuts to them at Third

Single Father Receives
Energy Assistance
Energy Assistance at ACCESS
Many low-income households struggle to pay
for heating and cooling costs, along with other
household and healthcare expenses. Energy
assistance programs are designed to assist low-
income families with paying for a portion of their
energy costs to alleviate unmanageable utility bills.
Through ACCESS’ Energy Assistance Program (EAP),
eligible households can receive a payment (typically
once per year) toward their energy bill. The EAP
is available for electric, natural gas, propane, oil,
and wood. There is NO requirement to be at risk of
disconnection but households need to be income
eligible.
When funding is available, ACCESS’ EAP is also able
to help income-eligible households with furnace
repairs when they are left with no heat during the
winter.
ACCESS’ EAP also refers households to the
Weatherization Program, which helps reduce
energy costs and can make their home more
energy-efficient.
IN THE PAST YEAR:
6,961 Energy Assistance payments made
15,442 individuals served
52 furnaces repaired

Mario, a young single father with three kids,
works two jobs to support his family. Mario
faced a difficult situation when his power
was disconnected and he turned to ACCESS
in dire need of immediate help. The Energy
Assistance team at ACCESS set up an account
for him and determined he was eligible for
services. Mario’s power was reconnected
before he even left the office.
ACCESS was able to negotiate a workable
payment plan so he could pay his balance
over the next year. This assistance also
helped Mario continue to support his
children. He also received $400 in utility
assistance during the same visit. “You guys
were accommodating and worked a little
longer to make sure that everything went
through, and that I appreciate,” says Mario,
“Without ACCESS’ help, I would have gone
home to no power.”
ACCESS worked quickly and with empathy to
provide the services Mario needed. Staff also
asked him if he needed additional help with
food, warmth or shelter.
The Energy Assistance team provides each
client with a tote bag filled with energy
saving tools. In addition, children receive
handmade toys which are donated by The
Toy Makers of Ashland.

ACCESS’ Free Mobile Market Expands to More Locations

drive to Greystone Court, there
are so many opportunities to

need. ACCESS is looking for
healthy, shelf-stable items.

Give Back
this Holiday
Season
Thanks to generous support from the Oregon Community Foundation,
AllCare, Coquille Tribal Fund, Amy’s Kitchen and The Carpenter
Foundation, ACCESS is expanding its mobile pantry truck to four new
locations. Renamed the ACCESS Free Mobile Market, the 27 foot truck
will travel across Jackson County to provide access to food for neighbors
in need. The same vehicle currently operates at Rogue Community
Health and La Clinica three times a month as the Healthy Mobile Pantry.
The first of the Free Mobile Market expansion sites was ACCESS itself.
“So many of our neighbors come to ACCESS’ office for help with things
like housing and energy assistance that we thought it would be helpful to
have the option for them to pick up food at the same time,” says Rachael
Ward, Nutrition Director.
Every Wednesday from 1-3 p.m. the truck is located between ACCESS’
Olsrud Family Nutrition Center and Lear Way building, off Cardinal
Avenue. Neighbors in need of food can register inside the Olsrud
building and then walk around the truck and shop from a variety of
fresh produce, frozen meats and staple items.

Community Partnership
Leads to More Resources
The Community Resource Desk (CRD) is a partnership with Providence Hospital to address many unmet
needs of some of the most vulnerable members of our communities. The CRD is designed to provide
an added service within a Providence clinic that cares for a large population of low-income patients.
Participants can be any community member who self-identify or be referred by a Providence caregiver.
The CRD is staffed by an ACCESS Community Resource Desk Specialist who provides resources and can
advocate on behalf of participants for a variety of services such as: housing, utilities, food, clothing,
transportation, jobs, children, dental and eye care, medical equipment, alcohol and drug recovery,
veteran services, seniors, and health insurance including assisting with OHP applications.
ACCESS and Providence are also partnering with OHSU to address Social Determinants of Health through
a referral process, data collection, and analysis.

Peggy Jackson was a single mom of five. She worked multiple
jobs at a time to support her family of five children. She got her
dream job at Boise Cascade in 1998. She had worked there for
only six months when Boise Cascade’s Medford lumber yard
burned to the ground in 1998. While Boise Cascade rebuilt,
Peggy and other displaced workers needed help. Peggy’s
supervisor and coworkers told her about ACCESS. She had
never needed social services before and was embarrassed to
call. Finally, Peggy picked up the phone. ACCESS staff took care
of her basic needs – she received food, necessary household
supplies, and utility assistance, so she could take care of her
family.
Once the company rebuilt the plant, Peggy was back at work. She had heard about Boise Cascade’s
Christmas Committee and wanted to give back so she immediately joined the committee. Peggy has served
on the committee for 19 years. Every year, this employee-driven committee adopts families and seniors
during the holidays, to ensure those who would otherwise not have a Christmas receive what’s on their
Christmas list. They also put together hundreds of Senior Shoeboxes every year for ACCESS. The Boise
Cascade Christmas Committee holds fundraisers, chili cook-offs, raffles and makes donations to pay for
the presents. One senior stated that her ACCESS shoebox gift was the best present she ever received in her
93 years and that it was as if the giver knew her.
Peggy told ACCESS that the committee doesn’t do it for the praise but they do it to help and bring joy to
others. She said they all look forward to it every year and it’s the highlight of their holidays. The Christmas
Committee could not do it without the support of Boise Cascade whose corporate values reflect its
employee’s values and ACCESS couldn’t do it without Boise Cascade!
On Tuesday, November 12th, Kaleidoscope Pizzeria
& Pub at 3084 Crater Lake Highway in Medford will
donate 100% of the proceeds from all dine-in sales
to ACCESS. Over the years, this fundraising event
has raised close to $80,000 to provide essential food,
warmth and shelter to those in need. Thank you so
much to Kaleidoscope for their generous support.

Greystone Court Food Drive Celebrates its 19th Year
This year will mark the 19th year of the Greystone
Court Food/Fund Drive, which runs from December
21st through the 24th. This long-standing tradition is a
beautiful way to get into the spirit of the holidays and
help those in need. Come out to enjoy the beautiful
holiday lights and say “hi” to Santa! Food and cash
donations will be accepted to help feed our hungry
friends and neighbors over the holidays. A special thank
you to the Greystone Court neighbors for supporting
Jackson County and making the holidays brighter for all!
Dutch Luv Donates to Fight Hunger
On Valentine’s Day, February 14th, Dutch
Bros will generously give $1 for every drink
sold to help support ACCESS. Over the past
few years, the funds raised through Dutch
Luv have equated to providing more than
176,000 meals to those in need throughout
Jackson County! A special thank you
to Dutch Bros for their commitment to
helping others!

the Holiday
Spirit with
Seniors in
Need
This holiday season, ACCESS will be collecting wrapped shoeboxes filled
with fun items for seniors in need as part of the Senior Shoebox Project,
which has been in existence for 39 years. For many, this is the only
holiday gift they will receive.
One senior states, “Yesterday I received a bountiful gift, a surprise
from you. It was the best Christmas present in my 92 years, especially
because it came from caring and loving hearts. Each package I opened
made me feel like a little girl at her first Christmas tree. I’ve never
received gifts that pleased me so much. It was as if the givers knew and
loved me.”
Shoeboxes are being collected until Monday, December 9th. Donations,
as well as volunteers to deliver, are needed. For information call
541-494-1201.

To donate or volunteer call 541- 494-1201 or visit accesshelps.org. NOTE FROM THE DIREC TOR This year has been a year of impact for ACCESS. With the completion of our ACCESS film comes an opportunity to resonate with our community. Seeing our team members portray our neighbors’ stories gives me so much pride. It showcases the importance of coming together to tell a story of how we provide food, warmth, and shelter here in Jackson County. We invite you to create an impact this holiday season by supporting your neighbors. This year marks the 19th year of the Greystone Court Food Drive in December. Our Senior Shoebox Program allows our community to share the holiday spirit with seniors in need. For some, this may be the only gift they receive. There are plenty of opportunities for our community to come together and participate in food drives, cooking skills, or become part of the ACCESS team. However you participate, we thank you for your generous support. Want To Be Part Of The ACCESS Team? If you are a dedicated, hard- working person interested in helping build your community, then ACCESS is the place for you. Visit accesshelps.org for more information. • 5. ESSC ACCESS NEWS / 5 Single Father Receives Energy Assistance Energy Assistance at ACCESS Many low-income households struggle to pay for heating and cooling costs, along with other household and healthcare expenses. Energy assistance programs are designed to assist low- income families with paying for a portion of their energy costs to alleviate unmanageable utility bills. Through ACCESS’ Energy Assistance Program (EAP), eligible households can receive a payment (typically once per year) toward their energy bill. The EAP is available for electric, natural gas, propane, oil, and wood. There is NO requirement to be at risk of disconnection but households need to be income eligible. When funding is available, ACCESS’ EAP is also able to help income-eligible households with furnace repairs when they are left with no heat during the winter. ACCESS’ EAP also refers households to the Weatherization Program, which helps reduce energy costs and can make their home more energy-efficient. IN THE PAST YEAR: 6,961 Energy Assistance payments made 15,442 individuals served 52 furnaces repaired Energy Assistance Program energy@accesshelps.org, 541-779-9020 3630 Aviation Way, Medford, OR 97504 www.accesshelps.org | Facebook: ACCESSHELPS Mario, a young single father with three kids, works two jobs to support his family. Mario faced a difficult situation when his power was disconnected and he turned to ACCESS in dire need of immediate help. The Energy Assistance team at ACCESS set up an account for him and determined he was eligible for services. Mario’s power was reconnected before he even left the office. ACCESS was able to negotiate a workable payment plan so he could pay his balance over the next year. This assistance also helped Mario continue to support his children. He also received $400 in utility assistance during the same visit. “You guys were accommodating and worked a little longer to make sure that everything went through, and that I appreciate,” says Mario, “Without ACCESS’ help, I would have gone home to no power.” ACCESS worked quickly and with empathy to provide the services Mario needed. Staff also asked him if he needed additional help with food, warmth or shelter. The Energy Assistance team provides each client with a tote bag filled with energy saving tools. In addition, children receive handmade toys which are donated by The Toy Makers of Ashland.

Give Back this Holiday Season Thanks to generous support from the Oregon Community Foundation, AllCare, Coquille Tribal Fund, Amy’s Kitchen and The Carpenter Foundation, ACCESS is expanding its mobile pantry truck to four new locations. Renamed the ACCESS Free Mobile Market, the 27 foot truck will travel across Jackson County to provide access to food for neighbors in need. The same vehicle currently operates at Rogue Community Health and La Clinica three times a month as the Healthy Mobile Pantry. The first of the Free Mobile Market expansion sites was ACCESS itself. “So many of our neighbors come to ACCESS’ office for help with things like housing and energy assistance that we thought it would be helpful to have the option for them to pick up food at the same time,” says Rachael Ward, Nutrition Director. Every Wednesday from 1-3 p.m. the truck is located between ACCESS’ Olsrud Family Nutrition Center and Lear Way building, off Cardinal Avenue. Neighbors in need of food can register inside the Olsrud building and then walk around the truck and shop from a variety of fresh produce, frozen meats and staple items.

  • 8. 8 / ACCESS NEWS Boise Cascade Remembers ACCESS During the Holidays Eat Pizza and Support ACCESS! MONTHLY VETERANS OUTREACH EVENT • EVERY 3RD TUESDAY FREE lunch, FREE haircuts and social services | 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. | RVVCO 601 N Grape St | (541) 531-6561 or (541) 821-0532 Peggy Jackson was a single mom of five. She worked multiple jobs at a time to support her family of five children. She got her dream job at Boise Cascade in 1998. She had worked there for only six months when Boise Cascade’s Medford lumber yard burned to the ground in 1998. While Boise Cascade rebuilt, Peggy and other displaced workers needed help. Peggy’s supervisor and coworkers told her about ACCESS. She had never needed social services before and was embarrassed to call. Finally, Peggy picked up the phone. ACCESS staff took care of her basic needs – she received food, necessary household supplies, and utility assistance, so she could take care of her family. Once the company rebuilt the plant, Peggy was back at work. She had heard about Boise Cascade’s Christmas Committee and wanted to give back so she immediately joined the committee. Peggy has served on the committee for 19 years. Every year, this employee-driven committee adopts families and seniors during the holidays, to ensure those who would otherwise not have a Christmas receive what’s on their Christmas list. They also put together hundreds of Senior Shoeboxes every year for ACCESS. The Boise Cascade Christmas Committee holds fundraisers, chili cook-offs, raffles and makes donations to pay for the presents. One senior stated that her ACCESS shoebox gift was the best present she ever received in her 93 years and that it was as if the giver knew her. Peggy told ACCESS that the committee doesn’t do it for the praise but they do it to help and bring joy to others. She said they all look forward to it every year and it’s the highlight of their holidays. The Christmas Committee could not do it without the support of Boise Cascade whose corporate values reflect its employee’s values and ACCESS couldn’t do it without Boise Cascade! On Tuesday, November 12th, Kaleidoscope Pizzeria & Pub at 3084 Crater Lake Highway in Medford will donate 100% of the proceeds from all dine-in sales to ACCESS. Over the years, this fundraising event has raised close to $80,000 to provide essential food, warmth and shelter to those in need. Thank you so much to Kaleidoscope for their generous support.
  • 9. ACCESS NEWS / 9 Greystone Court Food Drive Celebrates its 19th Year This year will mark the 19th year of the Greystone Court Food/Fund Drive, which runs from December 21st through the 24th. This long-standing tradition is a beautiful way to get into the spirit of the holidays and help those in need. Come out to enjoy the beautiful holiday lights and say “hi” to Santa! Food and cash donations will be accepted to help feed our hungry friends and neighbors over the holidays. A special thank you to the Greystone Court neighbors for supporting Jackson County and making the holidays brighter for all! Dutch Luv Donates to Fight Hunger On Valentine’s Day, February 14th, Dutch Bros will generously give $1 for every drink sold to help support ACCESS. Over the past few years, the funds raised through Dutch Luv have equated to providing more than 176,000 meals to those in need throughout Jackson County! A special thank you to Dutch Bros for their commitment to helping others! Sharing the Holiday Spirit with Seniors in Need This holiday season, ACCESS will be collecting wrapped shoeboxes filled with fun items for seniors in need as part of the Senior Shoebox Project, which has been in existence for 39 years. For many, this is the only holiday gift they will receive. One senior states, “Yesterday I received a bountiful gift, a surprise from you. It was the best Christmas present in my 92 years, especially because it came from caring and loving hearts. Each package I opened made me feel like a little girl at her first Christmas tree. I’ve never received gifts that pleased me so much. It was as if the givers knew and loved me.” Shoeboxes are being collected until Monday, December 9th. Donations, as well as volunteers to deliver, are needed. For information call 541-494-1201.
