With 236 years of age, Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) is one of the oldest still published newspapers in the world. However, despite its age, NZZ is far from being old-fashioned. Especially when it comes to data-driven decision making and data-driven innovation, NZZ has been investing a lot within the last three years. For wrangling large amounts of data we have been using Apache Spark for almost a year now – and do not regret this choice. It had not only given us flexibility with ad-hoc analytics, but also drives our data-products (in production). In this talk I will share some of our use cases as well as insights we gained over the last year with Apache Spark. I will especially talk about how we calculate article recommendations and showcase some new exciting data products which are currently in active development.

The right architecture is key for any IT project. This is especially the case for big data projects, where there are no standard architectures which have proven their suitability over years. This session discusses the different Big Data Architectures which have evolved over time, including traditional Big Data Architecture, Streaming Analytics architecture as well as Lambda and Kappa architecture and presents the mapping of components from both Open Source as well as the Oracle stack onto these architectures. The right architecture is key for any IT project. This is valid in the case for big data projects as well, but on the other hand there are not yet many standard architectures which have proven their suitability over years. This session discusses different Big Data Architectures which have evolved over time, including traditional Big Data Architecture, Event Driven architecture as well as Lambda and Kappa architecture. Each architecture is presented in a vendor- and technology-independent way using a standard architecture blueprint. In a second step, these architecture blueprints are used to show how a given architecture can support certain use cases and which popular open source technologies can help to implement a solution based on a given architecture.

Moving Past Infrastructure Limitations Presented by MediaMath This presentation was given at a Big Data Warehousing Meetup with Caserta Concepts, MediaMath and Qubole. The instant-on, nearly unlimited storage and computing capabilities of AWS has made it the defacto solution for a full spectrum of organizations needing to process large amounts of data. What's more, an ecosystem of value-added platforms has emerged to further ease and democratize the implementation of cloud based solutions. Qubole has developed a great platform for easily deploying and managing ephemeral and long-lived Hadoop and Spark clusters on AWS. Moving Past Infrastructure Limitations: Data Warehousing at MediaMath Over the past year and a half, MediaMath has undertaken a “data liberation” effort in an attempt to leave their bigbox, monolithic data warehouse behind. In this talk, Rory Sawyer, Software Engineer at MediaMath, will describe how this effort transformed MediaMath’s legacy architecture and legacy mindset, which imposed harsh inefficiencies on data sharing and utilization. The current mindset removes these inefficiencies and allows them to say “yes” to more projects and ideas. Rory will also demo how MediaMath uses Amazon Web Services and Qubole so that infrastructure is no longer a limiting factor on what and how users query. This combination allows them to scale their resources up and down as needed while bridging different data sources and execution engines. Using and extending MediaMath’s data warehousing is no longer a privileged activity but an ability that every employee and client has.

Moving Past Infrastructure Limitations

Effective resource management in IoT systems must represent IoT resources, edge-to-cloud network capabilities, and cloud resources at a high-level, while being able to link to diverse low-level types of IoT devices, network functions, and cloud computing infrastructures. Hence resource management in such a context demands a highly distributed and extensible approach, which allows us to integrate and provision IoT, network functions, and cloud resources from various providers. In this paper, we address this crucial research issue. We first present a high- level information model for virtualized IoT, network functions and cloud resource modeling, which also incorporates software- defined gateways, network slicing and data centers. This model is used to glue various low-level resource models from different types of infrastructures in a distributed manner to capture sets of resources spanning across different sub-networks. We then develop a set of utilities and a middleware to support the integration of information about distributed resources from various sources. We present a proof of concept prototype with various experiments to illustrate how various tasks in IoT cloud systems can be simplified as well as to evaluate the performance of our framework.
