1. DIGITAL PORTFOLIO LUKE HUDSON

2. MOVING IMAGE For my exam project in As I chose the question on Festivals, I decided to go with the route of music festivals and was inspired by an animated music video to create an animation of my own. I chose a video from the Reading Festival in 2009 and cut it down into 24 seconds of slide animation at 15fps, this allowed a less natural flow which I felt looked more effective. I drew on each slide individually and then scanned them back into Photoshop where I put the slides together to create the final animation.

3. PHOTOGRAPHY These images were gathered for a personal project, taking photographs of the local area this winter. I am only a beginner with photography and wanted to experiment with different angles that I have not previously used, as well as developing my photo editing skills on Adobe Photoshop.

4. These are my images from my photography of architecture, these were gathered from my trip to New York City in October which I then edited in Adobe Photoshop. The ‘Grand Hotel’ was taken in Leicester to give a contrast between the buildings of the two cities.

5. DRAWINGS For my personal investigation in As level Art I chose to study comic book and graphic novel art as it is something I have great interest in. I used a variety of methods to draw the characters for my work; pen, pencil and gouache paint being the key 3 media that I worked with.

6. My A2 personal investigation was a very character based project, once again to develop my characters to create a range of styles. The marker pen resulted in a sketchy, rough look, whereas the ball point pen allowed me to include a lot more minor detail. I began to explore digital drawing on Photoshop which gave me more creative freedom of colour and tone as I was able to be more precise with my selection.

7. I began developing these techniques further and explored the effect of combining physical drawing with digital. I drew the character initially by hand and then improved and rendered the line drawing in Photoshop, once the base character was completed I then filled in the tattoo physically with coloured pencil. I used flat colours so I could compare the results with that of my detailed characters that used I various shading and highlights to create.

8. I wanted to continue developing my illustrative skills on Photoshop. I drew the piece by hand and after scanning into Photoshop I rendered it with the basic brushes found on the software.

9. TYPOGRAPHY In my As Graphic Design exam I explored typography. These were ideas for logos for the Festival I was creating, the ‘Dropdead! Festival.’ I looked into the effects of repeating text in different colours and altering positions.

10. As well as using various colours and repetition I began to compare different compositions for these logos, using a more rectangular shape than squared. All of these designs were created in Photoshop.

11. PAINTINGS My A2 Art personal investigation project was based on 20 th Century American Art Movements and began by exploring abstract artwork. Using this inspiration I created a range of abstract paintings with varying techniques, such as dripping the paint similar to the style of Pollock, and flicking the paint to create lines.

12. I continued this process further by experimenting with more techniques, such as scraping paint with a variety of materials to gain different textures. I then began to use architectural imagery within my paintings, taking inspiration from my visit to New York City.

13. GRAPHIC DESIGN These are examples of products I created for my EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) which was to create promotional materials for the music industry. The album poster was an initial response to a pre-existing band, My Chemical Romance, I captured a screen shot (top image) of a music video and then used Adobe Photoshop to create the poster. The tour poster is an original response that I created using my own photography and then editing it using Photoshop.

14. This is a magazine article that I made for my EPQ. It was created again using my own photography, in Photoshop. This was a part of a range of promotional materials that I made.

15. As Graphic Design This was for my A2 coursework project which was to create advertisement for a Mobile Phone, the phone I chose to use was the ‘Nokia Xpress Music’ and therefore used a music artist to promote the phone. I used a combination of digital and physical art to create the poster, I tool an image of Jared Leto and then edited him in Photoshop to simplify his colours and create bolder colours. For the background I scraped poster paint to give the poster a rough and edgy look, which compliments the visual of rock music.

16. Once I completed the piece I imported it into Photoshop and put the image into an advertising environment, using a variety of billboard images I collected to show a range of editing technique such as using the warp tool to create the Underground station billboard, and the eraser tool to create the one outdoor one in public view.

17. A2 Graphic Design 1 This is a digital drawing that I created for my A2 personal investigation for Graphic Design, the project was titled ‘Politics, Power and Conflict’ and I explored political cartoons used in political magazines such as The New Yorker and The Atlantic.

22. A2 Graphic Design 2 In this Graphic Design project I began to look into human rights campaigns and wanted to create one of my own. I developed the idea of a campaign called ‘Step Up’ aimed at individuals in the general public to ‘step up’ and help in the fight for human rights

23. To give the campaign a more global appeal and professional look I adopted the Amnesty International logo and described the campaign as a product from the organisation. I edited the logo to fit my campaign by creating step and having a stick man walking up them, I believe this worked well as it was simple but yet sends the message that it intends to.

24. These are 2 posters from the initial poster series I created for the campaign, I wanted a simplistic, text based bold poster and I believe that the high contrast of white, black and yellow achieves this.

26. A2 Graphic Design 3 To further develop the campaign I began to target it at a specific audience, as the campaign was influenced by a song called ‘Step Up’ by ‘Enter Shikari’ I used the band to promote the campaign, thus aiming the campaign at a youth audience which will be the fans of the band

29. A2 Graphic Design 4 As the majority of my work was in conjunction with very Liberal ideology I created a poster for the conservative party to balance my project and have influence from both sides of the political scale. I had great influence from Shepard Fairey’s work when creating this poster, using his style of bold colours and harsh, straight lines.

32. A2 Art Beginning with simplistic character I developed towards my final piece for my personal investigation project. I liked the idea of using a couple for my focal point and created colourful work taking influence from my initial artist research.

33. Moving away from the colourful tone, I wanted to use a more gothic style, incorporating dark tones with selection of colour to shine through. I created a variety of characters for the different pieces. And used my own photography of buildings and graffiti from the trip to New York to give my work a personal identity.

34. I felt that my previous work was too dark and didn’t allow for the colour and characters to have a significant impact. I chose to use warm browns/yellows for my base colours as then using cold colours really contrasted and was very effective. I experimented with the idea of two canvases to split the piece. However I decided to move away from that and focus on my graffiti based art. I was influenced by grunge textures which gave the art a more gritty look. The wings of the American eagle was the influence for the angel style character, I decided to use this image as my final piece.

35. COMMISSION I created this poster as promotional material for the Professional Wrestling Company 1PW which they have used to advertise their inclusion in the Download Festival this year.
