The laboratory is engaged in research in the following fields: Marine biodiversity, Aquaculture, Conservation education and Ecophysiology (MACE) and has 4 main thrusts of research of which three are currently funded by the NRF and one co-funded by the Water Research Commission: The ecophysiological effects of microplastics on marine animals, in the Agulhas current large Marine ecosystem; The effects of fish traps in Kosi Bay on productivity; The importance of field guides and social media as tools in spreading conservation messages; Knowledge transfer in freshwater aquaculture systems and finding new potential local live feeds for finfish aquaculture.
