Barcelona Smart City is a world reference for Smart Cities. Urban planning, ecology and information technology are slated to reach into every neighborhood, to improve citizens’ quality of life. Barcelona is the first municipality to develop its own Smart City platform. The Barcelona City Council designed an open source IoT software suite called Sentilo, and use it to monitor noise and air pollution. Initial installation took place in a large, public city square. Subsequent deployments blanket the city, and other cities have been eager to adopt the platform. In this talk, Alicia Asin covers the challenges, actions and projected outcomes for Smart City measures, citing best practices for the global cities taking a long-term view on technology in the best interest of their citizens. Lighting, Energy, Water, Transportation are crucial to cities; air quality and noise pollution touch the citizens acutely. Open Data initiatives make municipal activities transparent.

Organized by Fab Lab Zagreb during the Croatia #STEAM Week, this lecture + workshop aims to open the mind and inspire Croatia teachers from formal K12 education through a hands on distributed and active learning activity. The main objective was to understand the process, tools and framework for prototyping #steam and maker-centered learning projects. We will accompany and train the trainers so they can learn and develop key digital skills and competencies and facilitate the transition to educational communities to become digital social innovators who respond to the challenges posed by Sustainable Development Goals (ODS 11, Cities and sustainable communities).

Snap4City has been created in response to Select4Cities PCP (http://www.select4cities.eu/) call as an open, standardized, data-driven, service-oriented, user-centric platform enabling large-scale co-creation IOT/IOE applications and services for Helsinki, Copenhagen and Antwerp. Snap4City is a fully open source, robust, scalable, easy to use solution, provides tools for co-creation of mixt data driven, stream and batch processing, extending the powerful semantic reasoner of Km4City https://www.km4city.org, with IOT/IOE, GDPR, and city dashboards. Snap4City (Https://www.snap4city.org ) is a solution for setting up Living Labs engaging different all kinds of stakeholders (city operators, researchers, city users, in house, industries) in contributing to the city evolutions, with a platform providing online tools for developing IOT applications, web and mobile Apps, data analytics, micro Applications, external services, KPI, POI, dashboards, IOT edge, etc. Snap4City/Km4City has been validated in multiple devices (PC, Android, Raspberry, IOT Button, Arduino, ..), and domains: mobility and transport, tourism, health, welfare, social and cities such as Florence, Pisa, Arezzo, and large area of millions on inhabitants as Tuscany and millions of data per day. The innovation is mainly related to semantic reasoning, IOT interoperability, microservices, automated dashboard production, end-2-end encrypted secure communications, GDPR, .. thus setting up in a Snap smart city solutions.

Presentation of the paper: "The environmental value of the Maker movement". The aim of this paper is to explore the environmental value of the Maker movement, which is driving digital fabrication into the mainstream. Makers are inspiring each other to create smart solutions for all types of individual needs, and address societal and environmental challenges at the same time. They share their creative ideas and solutions in collaborative workspaces and Maker fairs or on social media platforms. Is this grassroots innovation the beginning of the next industrial revolution? In the framework of a case study analysis based on ten different Maker initiatives across Europe, 39 interviews were conducted with Makers and Maker initiatives managers evaluating core questions such as possible environmental impact, value chains and energy efficient behaviours. The paper investigates if the Maker movement is to be considered a valuable resource in tackling most of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, e.g. clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, responsible consumption and production.

When you’re building (micro)services, you have lots of framework options. Spring Boot is no doubt a popular choice. But there’s more! Take Quarkus, a framework that’s considered the rising star for Kubernetes-native Java. It always depends on what's best for your situation, but how to choose the best solution if you're comparing 2 frameworks? Both Spring Boot and Quarkus have their positives and negatives. Let us compare the two by live coding a couple of common use cases in Spring Boot and Quarkus. After this talk, you’ll be ready to get started with Quarkus yourself, and know when to select Quarkus or Spring Boot.

Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/why-teams-call-analytics-is-critical-to-your-entire-business Nothing is as frustrating and noticeable as being in an important call and being unable to see or hear the other person. Not surprising then, that issues with Teams calls are among the most common problems users call their helpdesk for. Having in depth insight into everything relevant going on at the user’s device, local network, ISP and Microsoft itself during the call is crucial for good Microsoft Teams Call quality support. To ensure a quick and adequate solution and to ensure your users get the most out of their Microsoft 365. But did you know that ‘bad calls’ are also an excellent indicator of other problems arising? Precisely because it is so noticeable!? Like the canary in the mine, bad calls can be early indicators of problems. Problems that might otherwise not have been noticed for a while but can have a big impact on productivity and satisfaction. Join this session by Christoph Adler to learn how true Microsoft Teams call quality analytics helped other organizations troubleshoot bad calls and identify and fix problems that impacted Teams calls or the use of Microsoft365 in general. See what it can do to keep your users happy and productive! In this session we will cover - Why CQD data alone is not enough to troubleshoot call problems - The importance of attributing call problems to the right call participant - What call quality analytics can do to help you quickly find, fix-, and prevent problems - Why having retrospective detailed insights matters - Real life examples of how others have used Microsoft Teams call quality monitoring to problem shoot problems with their ISP, network, device health and more.

Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. We’ll explore French, Chinese, and Polish.
