FabLab stands for "Fabrication Laboratories". These are centres equipped with 3D printers, laser cutters and all sorts of other digitally controlled equipment. The first one was opened in MIT by Neil Gerschenfeld, professor of Bits and Atoms with a course entitled "How to make (almost) anything". They have now spread across the world including England. This presentation by Jane Keats was given to Leeds and Sheffield inventors clubs.

We live in uncertain times. Never before has a species had such a devastating impact on Earth. First through potential nuclear armageddon, now through human-made climate breakdown. Similarly, many innovations and technologies have made us more connected than ever, but we are equally more separate and disconnected. Finally, not only our natural climate but equally so our political and scientific climate are on fire. What to do? It is exactly in these uncertain times, changing times, that we might dare to dream collectively, together, on how we might move beyond the current mess we have found ourselves in. It is time to stage the revolution and commit ourselves to a more equitable world that respects planetary boundaries, embraces biodiversity, energy, water, wellbeing, society, and culture. In this talk I will look at the role that technology plays, and could play in, making such dreams a reality, and how new tools and paradigms developed under the moniker of the makers movement and maker spaces, open-source and low tech have the potential to remake the shaky ground (physical, conceptual — dare I say — ontological) on which we stand. Can technology, AI, the internet, open-source software and hardware really be of much help here? And why are anthropologists and engineers uniquely positioned to help? Presentation of the paper: "The environmental value of the Maker movement". The aim of this paper is to explore the environmental value of the Maker movement, which is driving digital fabrication into the mainstream. Makers are inspiring each other to create smart solutions for all types of individual needs, and address societal and environmental challenges at the same time. They share their creative ideas and solutions in collaborative workspaces and Maker fairs or on social media platforms. Is this grassroots innovation the beginning of the next industrial revolution? In the framework of a case study analysis based on ten different Maker initiatives across Europe, 39 interviews were conducted with Makers and Maker initiatives managers evaluating core questions such as possible environmental impact, value chains and energy efficient behaviours. The paper investigates if the Maker movement is to be considered a valuable resource in tackling most of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, e.g. clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, responsible consumption and production.
