4. INTRODUCTION
• A lathe is one of the oldest and most important machine tool.
• It is heavy duty machine.
• To remove metal from a work piece to make the required shape and
size is the main function of the lathe. It is also called “turning
machine”.
• A lathe was basically developed to machine cylindrical surface. But
many other operations can also performed on lathe, for example,
facing, turning, drilling, grooving and parting etc.
• A lathe is called “ The Mother/Father of the entire machine family”.
6. HISTORY
• Around 1300 BC. Egyptians
first developed a two person
lathe. One person would turn
the wood work piece with a
rope while the other used a
sharp tool to cut shapes in
the wood.
7. HISTORY
• In 1797, an Englishman,
Henry Maudslay, designed
the first screw-cutting lathe
machine which is the
forerunner of the present day
high speed, heavy duty
production lathe machine.
8. CLASSIFICATION OF LATHE MACHINE
Followings are the different types of lathe
machine
• Speed Lathe Machine
• Engine Lathe Machine
• Turret Lathe Machine
• Bench Lathe Machine
• Toolroom Lathe Machine
• Special purpose Lathe Machine
• Automatic Lathe Machine
9. USES OF DIFFERENT TYPES LATHE MACHINES
SPEED LATHE MACHNE:-
Speed lathe machine is used for cutting
work on woodwork piece.
ENGINE LATHE MACHNE:-
Engine lathe machine is used for cutting,
change the size, shape and finish the
work piece.
TURRET LATHE MACHNE:-
Turret lathe machine is used for repetitive
production of duplicate parts.
BENCH LATHE MACHNE:-
Bench lathe machine is used for turning small
metal parts.
10. USES OF DIFFERENT TYPES LATHE MACHINES
TOOL ROOM LATHE MACHNE:-
Tool room lathe machine is used for
cutting small tools etc.
SPECIAL PURPOSE LATHE MACHNE:-
Special purpose lathe machine is
used for heavy duty- jobs.
AUTOMATIC LATHE MACHNE:-
Automatic lathe machine is used for
cutting, shaping and sizing automatically.

13. The Lathe is machine tool which
holds the work piece between two
rigid and strong sports called chuck
or face plate which revolves. The
cutting tool is rigidly held in tool
post which is fed against the
revolving work piece or job.
WORKING PRINCIPLE
15. TURNING OPERATION
Turning is the most common
lathe machining operation.
During the turning process, a
cutting tool removes material
from the outer diameter of a
rotating work piece. There are
two types of turning operation
Rough and finish.
16. FACING OPERATION
Facing is the most common
lathe machining operation.
During the facing process, a
cutting tool removes material
for reduce the length of rotating
work piece. Facing process
provide true, flat surface with
the axis of work piece.
17. DRILLING OPERATION
Drilling is a process
performed on a lathe. Drilling
is a cutting process that uses a
multi point cutting tool (drill
bit) to cut a hole of circular
cross section in solid
material.
18. BORING OPERATION
Boring is a process performed
on a lathe. Boring is the
process of enlarging a hole
that has already been drilled
by means of single point
cutting tool. It also can be
used to cut a tapered hole.
19. Parting off is a process
performed on a lathe,
whereby a tool will pierce and
cut off a given length of
material. In parting process
cutting tool is moves
perpendicularly to the
revolving work piece.
PARTING OPERATION
20. GROOVING OPERATION
Grooving is a process
performed on a lathe.
Grooving is like parting,
except that grooving the
grooves are to specific depth.
Grooving can be performed
internal or external surfaces.
21. CONCLUSION
A lathe machine is a heavy duty
and high powered tool largely used
in engineering. They are use to cut
and shape metals, woods or plastic
and even drill holes with added
parts. There are different
types/kinds of lathes used in
engineering depending on what the
job is, such as mechanical
engineering.
