5. • Life is a journey from a pain ( birth) to a pain
(death)…… Pain is a dear friend who walks along
and tells when something is wrong.
• Pain motivates the individual to withdraw from
damaging situations, to protect a damaged body
part while it heals, and to avoid similar
experiences in the future.

• An unpleasant sensory and
emotional experience associated
with actual or potential tissue
damage

12. Classification of Pain
• Nociceptive – Due to Injury
• Neuropathic – due to lesion or disease in
somatosensory nervous system
Eg- Diabetic neuropathy, Neuralgia,
• Inflammatory – due to inflammation
Eg- RA, Appendicitis, Herpes Zoster
• Psychogenic – pain caused, increased, prolonged
by mental,emotional,behavioral factors.
Eg. Sometimes Headache, Back Pain, Stomach Pain
14. • Radiating Pain - Radiating pain is a sign that a
nerve or nerve roots along the spinal column are
under pressure from injury or inflammation. A
common symptom of many spinal conditions, this
pain travels the length of a nerve including, down
an entire arm or leg.
• Referred Pain - Referred pain, also
called reflective pain, is pain perceived at a
location other than the site of the painful
stimulus
• Shifting Pain - Pain that shifts is pain that started
in one place but 'moved' to include a new area.
18. • Marmas are the vital points or delicate areas of
the body. They cause death or damage or
deformity when they get injured. Based on the
level of damage caused by injury, Marmas are
classified into five types.
1. Sadyo Pranahara Marma – injury leading to
immediate death.
2. Kalantara Pranahara Marma – injury leading
to gradual death
3. Vaikalyakara Marma – injury leading to
deformity
4. Rujakara Marma – injury leading to pain
5. Vishalyaghna Marma – Removal of pierced
foreign material from the site leads to injury.

Injury leads to pain. Predominantly composed
of Agni and Vayu Guna are 8 in number.
• Gulpha – 2 in number – Ankle Joint
Manibandha – 2 in number – wrist joint
Kurchashira – 4 in number – distal to wrist
joint, distal to ankle joint.
